Not sure if Capitol was an inspiration, but maybe they are taking a lead from nighttime. Could MVJ be a Shonda Rhimes fan and thinking of Scandal? (A fave of mine.) She could even be a West Wing fan. Two dramas that mixed in politics very well. Personally, I'd love a daytime Scandal

It's giving B&B vibes in that the profession of the main characters and/or family is a backdrop for the personal relationships and drama. These characters seem too rounded out for this to be just a political soap. What is impressive about this is that it appears to go back to traditional soap operas where the characters were actually developed from the first episode.

Guys please don’t misunderstand me. I am no not saying that Capitol was the inspiration in any way shape or form. I am saying that perhaps perhaps the possibility that there are soap fans who are open to characters involved the profession of public service (aka politics) within the framework of a daytime drama might have encouraged someone to go on ahead and pursue that story thread (out of many other threads that they had been developing).

Yeesh, it’s not that serious, it was a thought.

Who knows. CBS could shift things around, because in most regions, the 9am hour is "local programming", as is the 12pm to 12:30pm time slot leading into The Young and the Restless. So it shouldn't change anything for the soap lineup. The Gates likely going to 2pm, which would put it against General Hospital in [some] regions.

Yes, but my point is that the 3rd hour of CBS The Morning, which has to play at 9am, would push everything back, and I doubt they'll move Price is Right from 10am, since it is so highly rated.

So, last week, The Gates would've been on an hour before GH in both LA and New York, but now they will complete for the same time slot.  Which seems unfortunate for a new soap.

Again, I don't know how it airs in Los Angeles, but here the line up is:

  • 7am: CBS Mornings
  • 9am: local programming (The Drew Barrymore Show)
  • 10am: Let's Make a Deal (replaced Guiding Light)
  • 11am: The Price is Right
  • 12pm: local programming (local news)
  • 12:30pm: The Young and the Restless
  • 1:30pm: The Bold and the Beautiful
  • 2pm: The Talk (replaced As the World Turns)
  • 3pm: local programming (Hot Bench)
  • 4pm: local programming (Judge Judy re-runs)

The generic listing in America for the 9am hour is "local programming," so I'd believe that would be the programming block for the third hour of CBS Mornings (in replacement of "local programming"). Whatever time slot The Talk airs at is where The Gates is likely to air, based on how it's being billed as the "replacement" for The Talk.

What I am trying to say is that if The Gates is “replacing” The Talk, then in the two biggest markets in the US, it would've been on an hour before GH.  But now, with the network taking back an hour from local NYC and LA stations, there is a major possibility that it will air at the same time as GH.  Which seems unfortunate given that many other soaps failed in the same slot.

Perhaps, streaming means that timeslots won't matter as much.  But, it is concern that was not a barrier when the soap was first proposed.  Which is why I am mentioning it today.

    • Hooray we made the exact same critique to Londonscribe!!!!!
    • I don't think they had any idea who he was this time last year. I think they were keeping their options very open. Same with totally dropping the Trina romance that was spoiled for him in the mags once FV clearly took a shine to him. Frank's priorities are bright and blazing in one color. I do think Gio and Emma seem to have worked out given that she is very dry and sarcastic and he is like a hot golden retriever, but I'd still play the field or explore quads with both with very different people - Emma with a scheming young man (of color), Gio with possibly Trina or someone else, or even a boy. Then maybe put them back together, who knows. But of course none that will happen.

    • He definitely got lost in the shuffle last year. First, they were implying that he was Drew’s son, then he was nothing more than just Violet’s bff

And then they changed him to being Dante and Brook Lynn’s son, which was clunky at first but I’m enjoying the storyline now.
    • GM is adorable, charming and fun onscreen despite months of nothing to do until recently, and has a bodacious bod. I'm not cosigning the show or this story - I haven't watched a full episode in over a month - but I think we're all taking the small victories in 2025 at this point. I'm open to testing this theory!
    • I think Jason might've posted some numbers for the syndication a while ago and the numbers for Falcon Crest was horrible. Like 1.5 rating or something, which was terrible.    ETA: it was actually Paul Raven:   New to syndication 60 min Fall Guy 67 markets 3.1/8 Falcon Crest 110 markets 1.1/5 To get into the top 40, you needed a 4.6/9 rating for reference - and Falcon Crest managed to get into a lot of markets to begin with. In the fall of 1985 Dynasty, Dallas and Knots were syndicated (show / rating / share / coverage % / markets): Dallas 3.4 10 51.7 92 Dynasty 3.4 10 48.7 47  Knots Landing 3.3 10 12.5 20  So, Knots as an example trippled Falcon Crest's rating with 20 markets - I'm sure those were major ones but it just goes to show you how much Falcon Crest bombed in syndication.
    • It's not bad but the stories move too slow. It's the same problem when Dan O'Connor was CO-HW with Van Etten, they have a million stories and they all drag on endlessly with no resolution. I'd argue the majority of the stories airing now are good but you get sick of waiting months for something to happen.
    • Thanks. I must have missed that period entirely for Lifetime.
