GH: January 2024 Discussion Thread

That's my problem with it -- once again, daytime trying to kiss up, acting as if they're honored that someone in primetime would be so kind about the soaps.

Take the open. Yes, Donna Mills and Morgan Fairchild were on GH, but they weren't legacy characters. Why have them open the show. People who watched the show -- and the ratings were not very good -- were there for GH, not for glimpses of primetime stars in the 80s.

Yes, I concur. Yet all over people are talking about this as if it's a realistic possibility. After all this time the golden boy has a wishing & hoping fanbase. Hey, I'd be all for it & Keesha could return with a 24 year old son in tow.

If I recall correctly, all they did was an end of show In Loving Memory screen. I never thought that was enough.

That's why I stopped watching any primetime or other specials that are "devoted" to the soaps.  There's always this attitude that these events are doing soaps an enormous favor by giving them tributes and whatnot, and that soaps should be grateful whatever crumbs of recognition that they get from the "mainstream" or "legitimate" industries.

There was a lot of superfluous nonsense-even with the current cast.  Which it's great they get to celebrate that way.  But I don't care what Curtis/DT thinks about his current story or Brick talking about wanting an Emmy.  I would have probably just gone chronologically and hit the highlights of each decade and interview some relevant people about those storylines.  From the late 70's to the present you have numerous cast members who could speak to it.   If this was for the fans, and truly the fans, no one cares about half this crap.  We want to see clips and highlights.  If ABC or Frank thinks something like this show was going to get new viewers they are so wrong.  The best you might get out of it is some lapsed fans that see some flashbacks and remember how much they loved the show years ago and may tune in to see what's new.  And also, it's like 9 months too late for the actual 60th anniversary lol.

Look, all I'm saying is that SBu DID speak more as Harris Michaels than he ever did as Jason. He confirmed he felt that way too. I don't have a printout of his scripts nor know every last miniscule dialogue he ever uttered as proof. Just that as a daily viewer, it is obvious he spoke more on Days. Sheesh.

I personally am sick of revisiting the 60s, 70s and especially the 80s of GH in terms of anniversaries. At this point, we're getting one every five years, and I don't know how much I can take of only seeing stuff about Luke and Laura, AIDS, and the like. While I have yet to watch the special myself, I'm glad they focused on more current content as the older stuff won't be bringing in any new sets of eyeballs. While you can embrace your history, you can't just sit on what happened in the past.

In fact, as an example on the show, Laura is married to Kevin and Luke is dead. So why keep bringing up how big of a deal they were? You need to set the tone for what's happening now and in the future.

Maybe when the show the show is eventually canceled they can remind people about Luke and Laura, but I'm personally sick of it.

The character died years prior to the actor's death. Storyline-wise, there was no story to tell. Outside of honoring Alan with a plaque or something similar to what The Young and the Restless did for the character of Neil Winters, what else could they do?

The fact that Jill killed Alan off is part of what rankles the fans. What Y&R did for Kristoff/Neil is an example of amazingly getting it right! I think GH missed the boat with the last Roger Howarth character. He should have been Alan's long lost son & have gotten to know his father with Monica & photo albums & the like. IOW, a memorial tribute hidden in the writing & character history. As far as a plaque goes Alan is in that alcove off of the hospital chapel. I know there's a picture of him. I imagine there may be a plaque. Oops I typed plague. Fixed it! Nobody cared about Jimmy Lee Holt.

Especially when everyone has acknowledged, once and for all, that Luke raped Laura.  Who wants to remind everyone else or be reminded that Daytime's Greatest Romance began with a sexual assault on the floor of a sleazy disco?

I think everyone's opinions can differ on this, but I assumed it was more of a celebration of 60 years of GH.  I want to see the 60 years of good times, not some of the gimmicky stuff that happened a few months or years ago.  I can agree with the Luke/Laura of it all especially since I know it can be quite triggering and ugly for a lot of people and we do tend to see the same clips of L/L, BJ, Stone/Robin over and over.

So even if you are trying to pivot to the future and pivot to what's next and current I don't feel like that happened?   Again, the big announcement was Steve returning, but were there any clips of Jason at all?  How would that bring a new viewer in?  I also think a Day of Days like preview of some coming events would have been great.

Anyhow, I still think it's a nice sentiment and that the thought was in the right place.

And today we get CamMat in full Ryan Lavery mode. I cannot believe he has reverted to licking his lips every third line. Shades of WhisperSpit and Frankenstare.

I heard he has a bigger gig coming up. It's not Hallmark, but something else maybe? Please let the Soap Gods remove this horrid "Drew" character once and for all.

I can't even figure out how that teaser tied in with the premise for GH.  Like, instead of a bunch of random doors that looked like they were borrowed from a community theater, why not have him enter through the ER doors instead?

Don't worry.  Now that

    • Where do you discover this crazy rumor??
    • Jill Farren Phelps was always very skilled at saying what she meant onscreen in the bluntest way possible, like whenever she wanted fans to support one character vs. the other (hence Megan McTavish groaning about having to write Kale Browne's Sam Rappaport into three days a week at OLTL). Perhaps you should consider doing the same. Historically your intent is always far more obvious than your efforts at coy embroidery anyway. You believe people are dismissing Phelps' accomplishments, and suggest misogyny and fan blinders allow people to too easily pigeonhole and dismiss her skill set. I think we all understand her varied skill set. We're saying it's not enough to make up for her deficiencies as a storyteller and creative. JFP was undoubtedly a skilled technical producer. As a solo storyteller, and de facto HW, she was a repeat and predictable failure. She was not the first or last EP (male or female) to think she was a writer. If you want us to stop taking your behavior personally when you suggest misogyny is at play in board opinions of JFP, perhaps you should consider spending the next 10+ years here not acting like you're the only one who gets it.

Melissa was here today & we went to Michael's Crafts & Ofc Depot. In Michael's there were two beautiful LITTLE girls who kept staring at me, so I gave them a littel wave & very quietly said HI & then did back. I told Melissa they were staring at me. She smiled & said "Purple. A lot of little girls love purple & you forget but you have purple hair. Seeing you their whole imaginations are transformed! Thinking "That lady has purple hair. That means I can have purple hair! They had no clue before seeing you that it was possible." I just laughed & laughed.
    • This opening scene is hilarious...it's like someone wrote out the script for Philip with one hand. And Rick...sniffing a scarf over and over. And in their next scene they are still sniffing the [!@#$%^&*] scarf as the camera stays all over Philip's bare chest and armpits as he keeps working out. Insane stuff.

Bay City better be ready, because I'm back!   At Vicky's apartment she is once again drowning in doubts and jealousy. Deep down she realizes that her dream wedding will be a farce and nothing can change that. Bridget tries to calm her down, but the heroine is determined to suffer. She is not hearing any positive thoughts. She doesn't believe Jamie will marry her. At the Cory Publishing building another farce is in process. Iris, once again pretending to be the angel of love and sisterhood... is telling Mac and Rachel some wonderful news. When Iris has good news, you really need to look out for yourself. That's when things are bad. So what are the news? Miss Devil has put Amanda up for an award! Mac is smiling from ear to ear, and Rachel is suspicious. Maybe that's the effect Iris is looking for. To once again accent on the fact that Rachel doubts and criticizes her daughter. Iris will do anything to destabilize their relationship. She is like a cancer. Back to Vicky! Jamie is at the door. Looking like a sad puppy, he has come with a surprise. No, he is not gonna leave her and her unborn... Not yet. He has bought her earrings. Sad face. How nice. NOT. Victoria, of course... manages to break one of them the moment she touches it. Bad premonition maybe? She was back in hysterics. It's not easy to trap a man into marriage. Then you have to live with someone that didn't want you in the first place.  We were introduced to a new character (to me at least she is new) - Cass's sister - Stacey. She is giving me "hidden skeletons in the closet"-vibes. Love a girl like that. Stunning actress. I like her. The highlight of the episode was the strange and creepy reveal of Evan the escort... hugging someone named Janice's grave. I remember she had an issue with Rachel... and Rachel killed her in self defense I think... It was hinted in prior episodes, but I lack the context and story. I just know that everyone at the Frame house was mad that Rachel killed the bish. But I also got the impression that this Janice was sick in the head. So Evan is now talking to her grave and telling her he is going to ruin Rachel's life basically. Oh, Evan... I liked you better as a sexy gigolo.  Overall - 10/10 - how can I rate it lower when I haven't watched in months!!!

    • Once again, Marlena and Kayla were used very effectively and I couldn’t be happier.  Marlena counseling Johnny and then Chanel was the best part of today. They’re really delving into the human emotion of this storyline and I think that’s a good thing. It feels so much mature than it was before. EJ’s fear about what could happen to Johnny if he doesn’t let go of his anger could lead to some really good storylines in the future.  I also really appreciate the way that Paula/Jeanne are mixing it up and having different characters interact with each other. It was nice to see Shawn and Johnny remember that they’re cousins and share a scene together. I liked the parallel that was drawn between the two of them, and what’s going on with their fathers. I did have mixed feelings about everything with Cat though. I enjoyed Chanel warning her about EJ, mostly because it played into the way that she was written today. But I wasn’t the biggest fan of the Chad/EJ scenes. The two of them discussing Chad’s potential feelings for Cat didn’t really keep my interest.  But above all, I feel that everyone is being used more effectively and that we’re getting a better understanding of everyone as well. And that was exactly what Days needed.
    • It's a wild story for sure, especially the final conclusion (and fireworks offcamera, like Victoria Wyndham tearing into Michael Logan).
