Members Mona Kane Croft
Half of one of NBC daytime's earliest super-couples has died. Rest in peace, Bill Hayes. Edited January 13, 2024 by Mona Kane Croft
Members danfling
This was posted on It's about TV: MMatinee Theater was an attempt by NBC to present a quality, five-days a week daytime dramatic anthology series; it was the first hour-long daytime series on television. NBC spared no expense in the effort, spending nearly $75,000 per week on the program, which was broadcast live and in color and was heavily promoted; ultimately, the cost became prohibitive, and NBC would cancel the program in June of this year. Today's production, "The Makropoulos Secret," is an example of the diverse programming the network was trying to establish. Based on the 1922 Czech play by Karel Čapek, it's likely more people today are familiar with it because of the opera by Leoš Janáček, which premiered in 1926. Matinee Theater was a bold experiment even during the Golden Age of Television; imagine trying something like it today. The listings are from the New York State edition, which clearly does not include New York City.
Members Jdee43
It's unfortunate that a lost of these visionary efforts have been lost to time. Some of Matinee Theater has survived though. There are some episodes on youtube. Apparently some of the later years were shot on color film and syndicated under different titles. It just seems like an incredible undertaking. https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-tampa-tribune-matinee-theater/19147159/ Edited January 19, 2024 by Jdee43

Members Contessa Donatella
In the movie NETWORK Faye Dunaway played exec Diana & she was patterned after Lin Bolen NBC Daytime VP who was the one to take Pete Lemay's idea & expand the soaps to an hour. Members Mona Kane Croft
I've always heard the character was based on Lin Bolen, but is there any evidence in the movie (or the dialogue) that it is true? I haven't seen the film.
Members Contessa Donatella
They are both the first women to rise so high in the, or maybe any, network. She struggles to develop a specific soap & that is thought to be a parallel to Bolen's considerable frustration & effort with launching "How To Survive a Marriage." But, hard fact? No. It's all interpretation. I'm surprised you haven't seen it. From a pop culture perspective it was one that "everyone saw". But, it's also a very very good flick.
Members Matt
I always recommend Network to anyone, especially anyone with any interested in entertainment, broadcasting, or TV. The first time I saw it, my mind was blown. It's shocking how this film released in 1976 almost predicts the future of television in many ways & is very applicable to many things we see today.

Members Contessa Donatella
I agree 100% and I would only add that Paddy Chayefsky was uncanny! The mind that wrote that then, since he could not have been Nostradamus, he certainly was ahead of his time.
Members Contessa Donatella
I have no idea where to put this, so here it goes. https://ccit300-1.blogspot.com/2005/10/all-hits-are-flukes-undecideds-explore.html?fbclid=IwAR0B1npMfU5Y3iVeptSUxNkSI54vjv0D0UkpSCHzDyjLDoWlfTYlNkR0tNg This is an essay by Bielby & Bielby sociology professors at UCLA who have written a great deal about soaps. This however is about primetime shows in general. And also it is dated.
