Hi there,

With the sporadic uncovering's of Classic OLTL episodes from the late 70's and 80's, I am very intrigued with Llanview's local landlady Ina Hopkins and her haven for some of the show's beloved characters.

I know Ina lived/owned the property, but who else lived there?

I know Karen Wolek did, after she broke up with Larry given her secret life turning tricks...

Katrina Karr... Karen's hooker friend lived there, and was Ina's business partner in a local restaurant...

Ed Hall, after his divorce from Carla...

Did Marco Dane when he masqueraded as his twin brother Mario?

Did Herb Callison when he separated from Dorian?

I think Faith KiplingJohnny Drummond, and Cassie(almost?) As well as Melinda? and Becky Lee

How was Ina written out of the story? Did she move with Kat to be a live-in babysitter to Kat's daughter Mary?

I wish she, Ina, would have stayed in Llanview throughout the 80's and 90's... I liked the boarding house motif and the surrogate families it created...

Thanks,

Erik

The boarding house was a great place. For wayward outsider characters. In the couple of random episodes. That feature the boarding house. I love the interaction between the characters. With a quirky Ina in a maternal role. I really like Karen and Ed's friendship.

I wasn't watching then but I love what I have seen of the boarding house and I think it fit with OLTL's theme and was a natural way to bring characters together. They should have done this again towards the end as the budget was slashed but soaps don't seem to know how to properly do this now.

Katherine Squire (See Soap Hoppers)  was Alice Lovelace, an early member of Ina's household.

Stephen Schnetzer's Marcello Salta lived there, also, I believe, romancing housemate Katrina Karr (Nancy Snyder).

Karen and Marco

Jill Voight's Becky Lee lived there.   Mary Gordon Murray moved Becky into the "Carriage House"

Ed Hall befriended Karen there

and I think you're right about Herb during a Dorian breakup

I have never heard of Alice Lovelace.

When is that picture of Stephen and Nancy from? It would have been nice to see Katrina back down the line, or Jenny with Christina.

Ooh good question... possibly? Because if it housed Melinda and Becky Lee initially before Karen, Kat, Ed, etc., that was mid to start of the late 70's.

It seems Cassie did live there, at the same time Herb did? And Gary Corelli lived there too (given an episode posted on YouTube in 1982)...

I believe Ina's boarding house appeared first in late 77 as the show prepared to move to an hour and new sets and characters were needed,

In addition to Alice Lovelace, Ina had a boyfriend Ethan Bottomley, who worked at the newspaper morgue.

So it seems they were going for a light comedy/oldies vibe at first with those characters.

Marco was living there and Becky Lee moved there so it was probably through Marco that we first saw Ina's?

Sally Gracie had been dropped by The Doctors after along run as Martha. Joseph Stuart was producing OLTL after exec producing The Doctors, so he may was familiar with her and might have got her the role.

It's funny to look back and see older characters being introduced. When was the last time a new over 50 character came onto a soap recently?

    • I don't think he ever gained much traction on GH. He should have stayed with The Doctors. Was Mark just a toned-down version of Nick? Were they basically the same character?
    • All I can think of is if a lot of big names were leaving around that time she wanted him back as a stopgap, although I have never seen any real evidence that he was popular with GH viewers.
    • I loved watching Shanice hand Leslie her ass and finally shutting her up. It was so good. I also love Martin & Smitty's family.  Anita has to have some sort of plan giving Leslie the tickets to mail for Winterfest. She has to be setting her up for a fall. It's pretty obvious to me Vernon is not cheating with Sharon. I think Sharon is helping him with his terrible singing voice for Winterfest. I still believe Bill & Dani are endgame but I love Dani & Andre too. I am definitely enjoying this story. And making Hayley a black widow is a nice twist.
    • Sorry for the spam. Wasn't sure where to put this, it's from Tony Geary's husband's IG. Tony watching Genie and Maurice on Mo's show.
    • This show is really trundling along BTW. When is someone going to show up to slit Beastmaster's throat or crack the whip on metrosexual Sidwell? (BTW, openly presenting this cheery bon vivant as casually bisexual would at least be something vaguely diverting.) At least kill Brennan by year's end. I'm bored.
    • She told Vanessa to "DOUBLE her offer" on the Jarvis house.  The Jarvis family accepted the doubled price.  Assuming the house has an appraised value of $2,000,000, she's theoretically paid the Jarvis family $4,000,000 for the house.  The bank would loan Leslie 80% of the appraised value ($1,600,000), and Leslie had to pay the balance with cash at closing --- $2,200,000.  She only had ONE million.  Where the hell did she get the rest?!  And now she's got contractors working on the house all day & half the night.  Who's paying THEM?  I keep thinking all this will crash around her.  Either that or the writers have absolutely no idea the limits of a million dollars.  Sounds like a "lot of money", but it obviously ain't when we look at Leslie's spending since she got that million dollar check in August.

    • Vernon is an idiot. Why would he have Sharon in the same hotel that Leslie is staying at?
    • Yes, that out of the blue return was odd. Maybe GG found a forgotten clause in the contract he signed when he was wooed to ABC and they were forced to take him back! Like George Reinholt he talked about the contract that promised him primetime roles. But it was loaded in the networks favor. I think it was Gloria Loring that re-signed at Days on the promise of primetime opportunities, but that was all it was- she was put up for guest spots and TV movies but not necessarily guaranteed that she get the role.
    • I still am baffled by why Monty brought back stunt hire Gerald Gordon in the early '80s out of nowhere for like a year. I haven't found anyone who can come up with a thing he did in that second stint of note.
