Thanks! 1993 always Seems to be considered the last "golden" age of soaps before it went downhill.

Do you have the write up's for B&B's Ridge & Thorne as Worst Brothers and them being most improved show?  I'd love to read them if you don't mind!

I can type them up real quick!

RIDGE & THORNE

Do you really believe that these two are brothers? Ridge and Thorne come from a close knit family and they both work at Forrester Creations but they never seem to connect. Do they squabble? No. Do they goad each other about who Dad likes best? Nope. Do they ever even talk? Rarely. You'd think that with the kind of year they've both had - Thorne supporting Macy in her battle with the bottle, and Ridge spending his nights and days trying to make a baby with Taylor - these brothers would have bonded. Yet we never see them tossing back a beer at the Bikini Bar or catching rays by the pool while plotting to oust Brooke from Forrester Creations. When one of them has a crisis, the other expresses only passing interest. And neither has close male friends. Two ambitious guys with thorny love lives and everything in common from genes to wives...seems like a missed opportunity to us.

MOST IMPROVED SHOW

There was a time when Bold and Beautiful was really The Caroline Forrester Show. (In Italy, the show was actually dubbed CAROLINE.) Nothing against actress Joanna Johnson, who played Ridge's doomed first wife, but B&B was long on tumors and short on humor. Even worse, it was suffering from ETA (Eternal Triangle Syndrome). Ridge couldn't choose between Brooke and Caroline; Brooke was caught between Ridge and his father, Eric and Eric couldn't choose between Brooke and Stephanie. Every time someone new showed up, you couldn't wait to see which two people they'd sleep with.

But this year, B&B veered in a new direction. The scripts got funny and feisty and more real action was woven into the fabric of the show. Take Eric's bizarre marriage to psycho nurse Sheila. Is she after his money, his body, just looking for a place to park her Doberman? With Sheila, you never know, and that's make this relationship so riveting. Every time they sink into the hot tub together, there's magnetism. (Of course Eric usually winds up with chest pains, Sheila gets that Norman Bates look in her eye, and that's just when Eric's "never can say goodbye" ex-wife, Stephanie, storms in stomping all over their monogrammed bath towels and their privacy. This is soap opera.) With Head Writer/Supervising Producer Bradley Bell at the helm, Bold and Beautiful has made a number of other significant strides. Brooke has she her Barbie doll BeLiefs and turned into a corporate bionic woman, Mary's not just struggling with her feelings for Thorne; she's also struggling to stay off the bottle - and out of Anthony's bed. And of course, there's never a dull day in Sally Spectra's life - heck, she even got Moses to come down from the mountain.

I never really got the impression Ridge gave a damn about Thorne and vice versa so really there's nothing wrong with this write up, although B&B was always bad with friendships.
I agree about a lot of what was said, but IMO the show never got away from ETA! and we know that's all Bradley knows how to tell...it was just better back them with his father still looking over his shoulder.
Also the first two years of B&B were definitely more humorless, but I'd say from Sally and the Spectra gangs arrival 4 years earlier the show found it's sense of humor....I don't know why they are acting like it took them 6 years to do so.

MOST RUINED CHARACTER - JULIA BARRETT

When she hit Port Charles, Julia Barrett was a sharp, feisty, don't-get-in-her-way business tycoon. She immediately tangled with Bill ("William" to her) Eckert. To say sparks flew would not do actors Crystal Carson and Anthony Geary justice. But they broke up and Julia's dignity went with him. Julia was soon mixing business with pleasure with her partner, Ned. He dreamed of Jenny while sleeping with Julia. She deserved better, but things got worse - her next lover was Ned's teen cousin, AJ. Before Julia could take up with Sly, she mercifully left town. GH's original Julia was one of daytime's few positive role models for working single women. She did not depend on a man for her financial or emotional survival. She worked hard. She did not sleep her way to the top. She had best girlfriends (Lucy and Dominique). She even had a best guy friend (Scotty). In the end, Julia bailed out, leaving sister Brenda truly orphaned. R.I.P., Ms. Barrett.

Thanks!  I remember thinking it was odd she started having an affair with AJ, but I didn't think he was a teenager lol.  I thought he was like 21 at least.  And it was kinda crappy she left her barely legal sister alone in Port Charles, but I never considered her ruined.  They definitely should have brought her back more often after she left.  Her sister dominated the late 90's, it was always weird Julia rarely appeared.

Agreed. I loved the cave storyline and their reunion at the train station in Switzerland

Lmaooo if only they knew what was to come.

Don't get me wrong, I love a good long running triangle, but B&B is in a league of its own lol

A long time ago, Mac, Carl's father and Ian Rain's father, Leon, went in together on a deal of some kind to market an experimental drug to cure a jungle disease. They each had a key to a safety deposit box which contained Leon's notes and formulas about the drug. But at some point, Carl's father double crossed Mac and Leon but for some reason, people started to think that Mac had been the doublecrosser and Ian came to town to get revenge and he thought he would if he found the three keys.

I think that's correct, the storyline was a little convoluted and all over the place. Plus, the idea that Mac and Carl's father worked together was a complete rewrite since when Carl first came on the show in the 80's, Mac said flat out that he had never even met Carl's father.

    • The way Andre held Dani afterwards, be still my heart. They think its only booty call hook ups, but I'm sensing a love slowly growing.  Way too much booty popping LOL.
    • I'm just pleased the homeless plotline has a point. I'm surprised they're going here this soon with the kids.
    • All caught up on May 2025, and it was rough. Truly rough.

    • I'll focus on the positives: 1. VP has been an unexpected addition to the cast. I wasn't thrilled that Amy had been recast simply to eliminate her. Gotta give props that Josh saw more. Amy actually works as the glue for the Winters/Hastings family. The surprise Audra/Amy relationship has added depth to both characters. 2. Victor/Phyllis. It was fun to watch Victor undercut every single Phyllis pitch/bluff. MS played this well. No way Phyllis can get away with histrionics with Victor. It was a nice touch that Victor acknowledged Phyllis' trauma, but that he knows her all to well. 3. Chelsea reading Billy. MCE is being wasted when Chelsea is a victim. Look at how much more interesting Chelsea has been challenging Billy and Adam. Please bring Chelsea back to life. Same with Adam. 4. Anyone else notice that AG sometimes plays this homoerotic vibe with Adam/Billy. Like that look he gave Billy when Adam exited the bar. Since it's neither actor was there during the Delia s/l, it's just a lot tougher to sell the animosity. Since she's always been there, EH's pain with all the Adam's sticks.
    • 1) A-M had an inferiority complex when it came to Phillip. Alan had adopted Phillip (his wife Elizabeth had a stillbirth, Alan then had the babies switched) and always favored him. When A-M came to town, he got involved with Blake as his marriage to Harley was disintergrating, and Blake was married to Phillip at the time (but that marriage was crumbling because a) Beth was alive and b ) Blake kept that from Phillip). But by the time Phillip left town in '91, he and Alan-Michael were on good terms. So whatever A-M's referring to is writer laziness to further this plot. 2) Meredith Reade Bauer was Fletch's sister and Rick's ex-wife. Their marriage broke up after she discovered she couldn't have any more children. After a fight, Meredith and Phillip slept together, she got pregnant. Right before they got married, Rick realized, thanks to a sonogram, that he couldn't be the father. I believe Meredith just told him it was a random ONS, and he accepted that. Meredith had complications, and Rick couldn't decide whether to save her life or the baby's. He asked Phillip to decide for him, and Phillip chose Meredith. It wasn't until after that Rick found out that Phillip was the father, and had chosen Rick's wife over his child.  Not sure why Rick/Blake were "at odds", other than by that time Blake had married Ross, who was Phillip's biological uncle. Phillip's bio parents are Justin and Jackie Marler. 3) Back in '90, Phillip was accused of killing Beth's ex-lover Neil Everest. (Neil was killed by a bomb he planted the night of The Towers opening. He had planned to kill Phillip (and there's some weird twist where Neil had killed his wife and her children in a building collapse or something...but anyway..)  But Gary Swanson (who was plotting with Neil for some strange reason) knocked Neil out and saved Phillip.  Neil had already planted evidence implicating Phillip in the bombing (to make it look like he had been caught in his own trap), so he was charged.  Phillip, Beth and Rick faked Phillp's death. Rick and Phillip planted a cadaver and burned it in a car to make it look like an accident. Beth was pregnant with Lizzie at the time. To divert suspicion, (Mallet was already skeptical that Phillip was alive) Rick and Beth married, which upset Mindy (who was trying to start things back up with Rick) and knew nothing about the plot. When it all came out, Rick, Beth and Phillip were all given community service, and I believe Rick's MD license was suspended. Beth and Phillip went to Arizona, and Rick (I think) first got help from his uncle Mike to start community service out of state.
    • I can't answer 1 & 3, but I can answer this: Meredith is Fletcher's sister. She's a doctor. She and Rick fell in love. At one of the Bauer 4th of July BBQs, they had a fight. She ran into Phillip at a bar and the two of them ended up having sex. Rick and Meredith reconciled and...you guessed it, she turned up pregnant. She didn't know for sure who the father was but she let Rick think it was his. Just before their wedding, he saw a sonogram picture. Being a doctor, he could tell how far along she was and realized he wasn't the father. He still went through with the ceremony (why, don't ask me) and afterwards confronted her about it. She told him she picked up a stranger at a bar. Rick was bitter about it but he still stayed with her. Eventually, the secret came out. Rick was furious about Phillip betraying him. Still, he stayed with Meredith (again, why, I don't know). She had a stillbirth and was left barren. Meredith finally decided to leave him and left SF for good. Rick was awful to her, including after losing the baby. Just was a creep about it. It was hard for me to ever like the character after this storyline. I don't knowl if one of the writers strikes was going on during this story, but it was so, so bad. Rick and Meredith had no chemistry. The way Rick stayed with her, the way she stayed with him, made zero sense to me.
    • Going back to 1980s Minneapolis sound.

    • 2 kids...its Tyrell and Samantha
    • There was tension between Alan-Michael and Philip because Alan-Michael was sympathetic to Blake (and married her) after Philip left her to chase after an amnesiac Beth, but the show exaggerated that tension when Philip returned. Meredith was Fletcher's sister. She was a doctor. Rick was married to her. Philip slept with her. She got pregnant with his child. When the truth came out, Meredith lost the baby, and she and Rick split up. I think Philip had faked his death to escape murder charges (with Rick stealing a corpse to help him). Someone else will remember more.
    • He has nothing left to do on B&B. He's still written as this perfect angelic godlike person who has bad luck with women.
