Yes, but I would say the wonderful Jessie Buckley for Hamnet is the only real lock of the acting categories.

He hasn't been for weeks, if he ever was. Him losing the BAFTA was the big sign. He's not well-liked, and that matters. You can see it in the ridiculous response to him pointing out that most people don't go to the ballet or the opera.

MBJ is the current favorite, but there's been enough of a racist backlash against him that I wouldn't be shocked if Ethan Hawke wins.

I think Marty Supreme is very good and Timmy is very talented, but he screwed himself in the last week or so with those silly comments and he'll deserve it if he loses for it. I've been rooting for OBAA and Sinners for a long time - I think OBAA is PTA's best and most substantial film since Phantom Thread, and less of a piss-take than some of his other recent ones I liked but found lighter - so I'll be happy if they take a lot of it (and Rose Byrne for Legs). Hamnet has some lovely performances and beautiful direction, I adore Jessie Buckley, Mescal is great and little Jacobi Jupe was stunning too, but the second half is classic calculated Weinstein/Miramax Oscar bait straight out of the '90s, heavy on thudding schmaltz, and so I found a lot of the latter portion of the film tedious. Billy Shakes improvising To Be or Not to Be like beat poetry on the docks was giving Good Will Hunting's more memed moments.

I am very happy for Amy Madigan tonight, even if I think it should've gone to Teyana or Wunmi Mosaku. Madigan has been a strong powerhouse and underrated stalwart for films even in leaner years, particularly the often forgotten, oats & dust indies of the '80s and other genre pictures where she first made her name. Weapons is not entirely the sum of its parts for me unlike Barbarian, but it has wonderful work from her, Julia Garner, Brolin, Austin Abrams and little Cary Christopher from Days. So I'll be glad for her win as is.

I can't believe I'm sitting here typing this after nearly 2 months without my favorite show. I've been postponing coming back to it, because I didn't have the mental energy for anything besides work, work, work. But I knew this time would come. Let's dive in, shall we?

I'm going to start with the strong stuff at the beginning. These two episodes were like a slap across the face, emotionally speaking. We learned that in life... nothing is guaranteed. Everything can flip in just a few seconds. A romantic, sexy rendezvous turned into a terrifying night for my girl... Dorian Lord. Jason told her that he... felt "something" - a lump in her breast, while they were being intimate. Dorian was taken aback at first, and then... she checked. And from the expression on her face, it was clear that something very concerning crossed her mind. Suddenly, the queen of mean was faced with her own mortality, and her emotional reaction was to rush to her daughter. It felt a bit... foreboding, as if she was trying to fix her past mistakes in order to make that scary possibility disappear. Robin Strasser was amazing in these two episodes. First... we saw the sensual, playful Dorian, seducing Jason, and then after the shocking realization - the look of fear and confusion. Robin made me feel for Dorian in these scenes. I felt like I was RIGHT THERE WITH HER. This has the potential to be a really impactful storyline. I can't believe that I ever doubted if I would be able to adjust to Robin in the role.

Marty Saybrooke is a girl... a woman... caught between past and reality. Caught between DARK and LIGHT. She is a bad woman on the edge of becoming good, or perhaps more accurate to say - of finding her better self again. She has everything she needs for this - people who care about her, a new friend - little Jessica, and even a new guy who's romantically interested - Suede - who showed up at her door with flowers and made he open up and share a beautiful melody she composed on the piano. We're seeing glimpses of a heroine - someone with a heart and a potential to grow. Not the miserable witch we had to endure for the past year. Or maybe WE HAD to see that witch to be able to appreciate what we are seeing now. The contrast. But then there's the other side, still very much ACTIVE - the dark energy that continues to pull her back. The old habits and ways that are almost impossible to shake off. And a new monster hiding in the shadows - Todd, who the writers are giving more and more material with each episode. Now we're starting to see what this creature is - a spoiled rich male bitch who believes he can use and abuse anything and anyone he desires. And now he just wants to take advantage of a destructive alcoholic woman, who is trying her hardest to recover. Marty is torn between these two worlds and it's captivating to watch. And a bit disturbing, not going to lie. But the whole show is a bit disturbing.

Now let's talk about a few things that just DON'T WORK. I'm going to keep repeating this because I can't ignore it. Mortimer, Tina... the whole mess with Alex and whether Carlo is alive or not is really bringing the whole show down. Every time we have a scene where Tina is yelling at Cord or Cain or... Mortimer acting like some character from an action spy movie - it makes me cringe. I really hope that since so many new storylines are starting, at least that's how it seems to me... it means we're finally moving towards an END for Mortimer's weird journey. And seriously, can we just have TINA choose which penis she wants and get it over with? PLEASE JUST GET IT OVER WITH, before I come and take Cord away from her. AND I MEAN IT.
P.S. Andrew and Cassie are discussing having a baby. We're getting to see the reverend more often without his shirt, and it's quite a sight. Those pecs were kept from us for so long. 😁 The idea that they are writing this future baby plot alongside Dorian potentially facing a cancer diagnosis is... very interesting. A new life being brought into the world while someone else is fighting for theirs. It sound very powerful... if that's where they are headed. And it really makes you realize - we all have just ONE LIFE TO LIVE.

Overall - I'm so happy to be back. I'm going to be having a free week from work, so I'm going to be binge watching OLTL a lot probably. Now with the Dorian storyline... I am SO HOOKED back on the show.

Judy Pace is a rarity, not so much because she’s a young Black actress as because she’s a young intelligent actress.
Young actresses are mostly heaven to look at and hell to talk to. Either they have nothing to say, or they’re afraid they’ll offend somebody if they say it. So you get quotes about how long the distances are in Los Angeles and what a wonderful woman Julie Andrews is to work with.
Judy Pace doesn’t mess around like that. She says what’s on her mind, and that must be a family tradition. Chicago audiences are familiar with her activist sister Jean Pace, a singer who often appears with Oscar Brown Jr.
Judy is currently co-starring with Christopher Jones and Yvette Mimieux in “Three in the Attic,” which is a box office hit in its Chicago world premiere. If it does as well nationally, it could be her big break in the movies.
In the meantime, she keeps busy with a regular role on Peyton Place (starting this month), with a chain of dress shops she operates with her sister and with
modeling assignments and TV commercials.
“The hardest thing to do,” she said in an interview, “is to find any sort of movie role if you’re a black actress. People don’t realize that. They talk about Sidney Poitier and Jim Brown – but where are the actresses?
“Let’s face it. If it weren’t for TV, all the young black actresses in Hollywood would be unemployed.
Whenever they cast a movie, they don’t look for actresses, but for vocalists. So Diahann Carroll, Abbey Lincoln and Barbara McNair get movie roles. But name me one young black actress – not a singer, not somebody with a pre-sold image – who’s in the movies.” Miss Pace said she established a five-year-plan for breaking into the movies. “I figured if I didn’t make it by then, I’d quit wasting my time,” she said. “I spent two years studying, taking acting classes and workshops, things like that. Then I began to do some modeling and to get an occasional TV role. And then the ‘Three in the Attic’ role came along in the fifth year, two weeks before the deadline . . . Not that I wouldn’t have stretched the deadline, of course.”
The interview ranged widely, and her remarks were direct, outspoken and laced with wit.
On the Peyton Place role: “I play a character who has hang-ups like everybody else. I’m not exactly a lady on the show, I suppose; I’m pregnant, running away from the police and blackmailing the doctor. And I don’t come from the suburbs; I come from Harlem.”
On roles for black actresses in the movies: “I think Peyton Place is more honest in dealing with the sorts of problems people are really into. You go to the movies, and if you see a black girl she’s a goody-two-shoes. All the black women in the movies seem to be nurses, schoolteachers, social workers. Black women lead real lives, baby; they’re not all doctors’ wives.”
On TV talk shows: “What gets me is the way the audience is always applauding all these noble, stupid statements the hosts and the guests come up with. Like a guest will say, teenagers aren’t all bad, we have some good ones, and the audience will applaud. Or the host will say, we’ve got to support our boys right or wrong, and everybody will applaud like crazy, as if that made any sense. I don’t think the audience listens, it is conditioned to applaud anything that sounds safe.”
On her career: “If ‘Three in the Attic’ makes it, I’ll have it a lot easier.
“Producers don’t look for great performances, they look for lines at the box office. If your movie makes money, you get job offers. I have a good, strong role in this movie, and I’ll get some of the credit. Or the blame, if it works out that way. But you know what? I don’t think it will.”

He hasn't been for weeks, if he ever was. Him losing the BAFTA was the big sign. He's not well-liked, and that matters. You can see it in the ridiculous response to him pointing out that most people don't go to the ballet or the opera.
MBJ is the current favorite, but there's been enough of a racist backlash against him that I wouldn't be shocked if Ethan Hawke wins.
