Slate tends to love clickbait hot takes, so nothing new there. The level of contempt for Glenn Close winning an award based on career respect, which has been a part of the Oscars for many, many, many years, does nothing for me. Trying to shoehorn in some kind of comparison about Rami Malek (where there are valid reasons to not want him to win) just ends up making a mockery of sexual abuse allegations against Bryan Singer.

I don't understand his claim that Rami is sure to win. It seems fairly obvious to me that Christian Bale will win, even though from what I've heard it's not very deserved.

This comment did make me laugh:

Jeff Bridges in Crazy Hearts.  Kate Winslet in The Ex Concentration Camp Guard who Learned to Read.  Nicole Kidman's fake nose in The Hours that Felt Like Years.  Julianne Moore in Alice’s Brain Is Broken.  Cate Blanchett in Late Period Woody Allen film #512B.  Gary Oldman in Another Winston Churchill Hagiography. Al Pacino in Hoooooo-Ahhh! There are plenty of lifetime achievement awards given to great actors and actresses in mediocre movies.  It's not the end of the world.

Yeah, practically every year someone wins an Oscar more for career achievement than an individual performance. Not sure why the outrage about Glenn in particular. It’s better than the various “Hot Young Thing” Best Actress winners (JLaw, Emma Stone, the list goes on).

I think Rami does have a real shot, but stories like this constantly in the news won’t help:

I think it's because it doesn't give them anything sexy to write about. They can gush over Olivia Colman because The Favourite is a "hot" movie and a historical movie. They can gush over Gaga because she gets clicks and she has an enthralling life story.

As years pass more and more people seem to agree that JLaw's Oscar was not deserved, and that she was never worth the hype.

I actually like JLaw, but I think it was too much too soon, and her choices in roles haven’t done her any favors.

I totally agree that Glenn doesn’t buy them a clickbait narrative for the young, “cool” people, but people really responded to her feminist Globes speech. It was all the news shows focused on from that ceremony.

Ah, I didn't realize he was making a point about how long the other nominees are. Thanks for clue-ing me up.

As for the lead male category, it really is a shame Bradley Cooper has lost any hype/hope at winning. I've been critical of his last two nominations, but he should have been the front runner this year. I don't know why he isn't.

Glenn Close absolutely deserves it this year. The Wife will be a forgettable film, but her performance in it is outstanding. I will be rooting for her to win, and that's coming from someone that champions A Star is Born and absolutely loves Olivia Colman. I do believe the latter will be nominated again in future and will eventually have her time.

    • Melissa Ordway announced she was moved to recurring back in November but is still credited with the contract cast members.
    • I think of Evan as a smarmy bast*rd. Maybe you'll like that description. You certainly have him pegged correctly since he is just a soldier following "Admiral" Iris's marching orders.
    • So far the only interest I've seen from Evan to Amanda has been listening to Iris's orders to go and seduce her.  So far he hasn't been successful... but who knows. Amanda is unbearable at times. Entitled, spoiled... idiotic. Iris... so blatantly manipulating her and Amanda takes the bait. But I guess... when she gets in trouble... she'll have a chance to learn. That's what makes these shows so interesting.    Oh, no, don't worry. You haven't ruined a thing. Evan has not been on my radar that much... he was not one of the characters I was caring particularly... so nothing much has been changed for me. I don't think he has the stuff to ruin Rachel's life. He's just a pretty guy that can follow orders. Iris on the other hand... is dangerous.

P.S Maybe Evan will surprise me. Who knows.
    • The show has gone back to 10/10 entertainment! I'm glad that I was right in feeling that what were experiencing were growing pains. I'm sure they are not over yet, but I'll know that we always comeback to quality drama. I think it's going to be a hell of ride (in a good way) from this moment on. BTG has that magic that not a lot of shows have. I'll update more... when I'm done catching up.
    • So very glad to hear this. Yesterday I suddenly thought; OMG, what about spoilers, have I just  ruined things for Maxim in getting carried away with interest in Evan, who was so well-written & well-acted. BTW, your fan review of this episode was a sight for eyes that had not seen one of these for a little bit too long, LOL!!!  Mitch is also fascinating to me but in his case it's because he was all in with Janice & her nefarious plan & then he did this turnabout we've mentioned & he basically got off scot-free.
    • It does seem cheap and lazy for this show to have just one family. Passions was heavily criticized but it was nicely structured with a total of four families.
    • I think it was definitely a surprising reveal in the storyline. I had a hard time appreciating Evan because I couldn't get behind his interest in Amanda. But that's because I never thought Sandra Ferguson made her a compelling character (although to give her credit she occasionally had decent emotional scenes with Mac or Rachel).
    • I'll even go further... I'll make her re-think BeLief and create a new patent. Brooke needs stuff to do. Anything other than beg or be in her panties. We need her to be creative. But sadly Bradley has a very low opinion of these characters. To him Brooke is nothing more than sex and scandal... or a pathetic doormat. Ridge is nothing more than a chauvinist pig that needs to pit women against each other to feel like A MAN and Steffy is nothing more than her father's guard-dog. I don't even want to open my mouth about Hope. She is such a fiasco in my opinion... I will not suffer if they kill her off. Bradley pooped on her character and now it's too late to fix it. Annika is great and I would hate to see her go, but slutty Hope was not her thing. The vibe was missing.
    • I've seen Jason interact with Mitch and annoy him. That's as far as I recall. I didn't even have a slight idea that Evan had a vendetta against Rachel... That came as a surprise to me. I thought Evan was Iris's dog and that's it. Now he's definitely more interesting.
    • Thanks for these. I can't recall -- did Evan's vendetta have any position on Mitch, or was it all about Rachel? @Maxim have you seen any Frames intreracting with Mitch in any way?
