WEEKLY DAYTIME RATINGS CHARTS FOR 1985 NOW POSTED...

Also, explanatory notes have been added to the 1980's pages to explain the columns and the meaning of the "fast national" weeks, whose numbers are not counted towards the yearly averages of soaps (something Nielsen ended in 1987).

1986-1989 will be posted soon.  Click here for all weekly Nielsen charts available from 1980-Present: https://www.jason47.com/days/nielsensweekly.html

There might have been numerous partial preemptions that day, but for the week of 10/19, we only know that all the soaps aired 5 episodes that week that were all counted as part of the yearly averages. If they were "breakouts", they would not have been listed in the regular telecast column in the 10/26 issue.

UPDATE # 1: SON was nice enough to pass along my message to the email they have for VR, so hopefully it is still an active email address. If not, then we are at a dead end in regards to VR's data.

UPDATE # 2: I forgot how quickly emails come back if the email address no longer exists. I got the "no longer exists" email back already, so VR's email no longer exists.

@Soapsuds That As the World Turns episode you described was an early 2000s holiday classic.

Y&R, ABC big three, Days are jockeying for position in the top 5.

Supercouple Days successfully transitioned from the Bo/Hope years to the Steve/Kayla years.

Marland As the World Turns was doing well and regularily finishing in the top 5 but I wonder if the time slot change, pre-emptions, and Nielsen people meters derailed their momentum.

Guiding Light appears to have gained lost ground with Pamela Long back as HW.

Santa Barbara has been finishing ahead of Another World recently but I don't think that will last. From the annual ratings Santa Barbara never finished ahead of Another World.

Note: Ratings data comes from both a 2019 Soap Opera Network post by VanessaReardon, who seems to have had access to Nielsen data from the 1985-1988 time frame, and a more recent find of a Daytime TV Magazine, which confirms those ratings & provides the shares. As the note states, preemption data has been confirmed by comparing the # of telecasts in the 12/7 Nielsen book to the # of telecasts in the 12/21 book. This confirms that there were no full preemptions for any soap this week, but it is unknown if there were any partial preemptions this week.

The week between Christmas and New Years Day 87/88 (which usually sees a nice boost for all soaps), sees GL get its first 7 rating since the week of Feb. 10-14, 1986 - almost two years earlier.

Also, this is the first time this decade that an ABC soap has not scored the top spot for that week. GH topped that week in 1980 - 1982 and 1985 - 1987 and AMC in 1983 and 1984.
