I wasn't sure about Helena Bonham Carter. But she was quite good. The scene where Nolly gets her last script was very powerful. Nolly's picking up the pieces after her infamous sacking was very fascinating to watch. Sometimes the scenes have real depth. Other times it feels like a comedy.  Those shifts in tone can be a bit jarring. Nolly's friendship with Tony Adams was very sweet. In spite of its flaws Russell T Davies wrote a wonderful love letter to the iconic Noele Gordon.

I watched the doc The Real Nolly prior to watching the three part series, which I would not recommend because it is a 45 minute TL:DR of the whole story.  I really enjoyed the miniseries.  HBC did Noelle dirty when it came to the singing because the real Nolly had a powerful singing voice.  And making the central drama around her dismissal kind of negates her other accomplishments both as a morning show hostess and TV executive.

However, I walked away wondering how iconic she really is?  Everyone notes that Crossroads was made on the cheap, but it won a ton of soap awards.  She was on it for 17 years, but she died four years after the publicity of her being sacked, which is now more than 40 years ago.  The wiki notes that it beat Corrie in the ratings, but there were only three networks in the UK at the time.

So, I have to question about whether a modern audience would even remember her if it wasn't for Russel T Davies?  For comparison, is she Susan Lucci famous or Mary Stuart famous?  Because both were soap stars, but arguably only Lucci is iconic.

Also, I kept thinking that RTD must be Ron Carlivati's hero, because they both revel in historic references to soap divas.

Her biopic was much more fun because the story had more depth and didn't only focus on her time in soaps.

And, I think we have to take into account that, (according to the doc), Nolly's series Lunchbox was only shown in the Midlands, because that's how the UK networks were organized at the time. So, she might not have been as popular to viewers in the north or in London. Similar to Lee Phillip Bell's fame in Chicago, whereas to rest of the country she was just Bill Bell's wife.

The British television ratings system and its history is quite convoluted and messy, but outside of occasional instances, that doesn’t seem factual from the data that’s available to us. There’s years from the 70’s (60’s data is a rare find) through the 00’s where Coronation Street wasn’t just the highest rated soap, but actually the highest rated program in general on British television.

Though, in weekly ratings (which, historically, is like trying to find a needle in a haystack) anything is possible. Coronation Street ran just 2 weekly episodes up until 1989 when a third was added (now up to 6 episodes a week). Crossroad ran 5 episodes a week for most of its run (cut down to 2 in 1988) and ended before Corrie expanded to 3. Crossroads also ran in the daytime and Corrie didn't.

Corriepedia says that for a few years after 1972 Crossroads "regularly outrated" Coronation Street, although this presumably means on an episodic basis and without further clarification could mean as regularly as once a week, once a fortnight or even once a month.

What is known is that from 1972 - 1980 no more than a dozen episodes of Coronation Street each year claimed the top spot on the weekly charts and that sometimes episodes were in the teens for the weekly rankings, so there were likely a few opportunities for Crossroads to "outrate" it on a weekly basis but likely not on a yearly basis as you say.

    • I've seen this error before. I think it should be okay in the future.

    • Ted has been icky and giving off bad guy vibe from the first moment I saw him. I have a sensor for that and it was beeping! So...don't put all the blame on Silkpress. The woman needs a good psychiatrist, true... but Leslie is just one of the skeletons in HIS closet. Ted is even a bigger monster, because he's hidden.  IT WAS A PERFECT REVEAL. Perfect, because in the beginning of the show... Dani was envying her sister's marriage... In these first few messy weeks... her own misery and life spiraling was contrasted to the picture-perfect marriage Nicole and Ted seemed to have. (on first glance). What happened now... is very very smart writing. THIS IS THE MOMENT THE MASKS ARE FALLING! The message it delivers to me is this. It says - no matter how things look... they are not what they seem. You can't judge a marriage by how it appears to be. Aaaand in the long run... maybe the messiest-looking people (Dani Dupree, I'm talking about you!) HAVE less issues and problems than the ones that seem to have it all. The ones with the MOST skeletons in the closets and the dirty pasts.   It was an AHA moment for the whole family and the viewers and a way forward for Dani and Nicole to bond even more and realize they are MORE alike than they are different. Now it will be quite a different dynamic, because Dani will have to SUPPORT someone and not be the one getting her wounds licked always. And also another lesson. Some men are dogs. Not all of them. But a lot of them are. The difference is... some can't be easily recognized. These creeps have put very impressive masks. The show is doing this perfectly. Beat by beat. Exploring classic soap opera themes and stories. Real-life characters and situations, that are relatable and make you think... Hmm... maybe I need to dig a little deeper next time I say "these people are perfect" or otherwise. Maybe I need to think MORE. That type of storytelling. It's not easy to do that.  Brava BTG.  B-R-A-V-A!
    • I speculate that Nicole will go through cycles of numbness/grief/rage.  At some point later on, regardless of DNA results (or faked results), whether there was a baby swap or not, I think Nicole will forgive Eva, and eventually love her someday.  Nicole will come to understand that Leslie gaslighted/manipulated Eva.  Nicole will be her loving self, although more guarded than before.   Just my thoughts.
    • Lol. That comment was just silly.  I feel like The Guiding Light started it when they made me love Roger Thorpe. Leslie is pussycat in comparison and there is a lot of story to go  for her and Eva.
    • Your posts continue to amuse me. I don't know anyone else who thinks Leslie and Eva should "hightail it out of town."  And listen, soaps have been FOR DECADES keeping around villains who we know would be jailed in real life. So is it crazy to think "they are just going to let this slide"? No. It's kind of hilarious to watch you take everything that happens on this show and distort it or lead me to think, "Huh???"
    • I can't even count the amount of magazine covers and photoshoots KKL has been in the past few months. Shame that the show is not mirroring the success she's having. It would have been so great to see both KKL and Brooke be on top.  I'm still holding a grudge that Brad rewrote the company take-over to a nothing... and then nulled Brooke to being a romance beggar again.
    • I'm also getting an error that I haven't seen before, but there's been a couple of different variations, so not going to worry about it for now.
    • Finally got to sit down and watch. Wow!  When LesDanLuAnn said to Ted, this your daughter. I started tearing up...... Eva got me.  I felt like I was watching a soap opera.

    • The drag was when Tad and Edmund went to Budapest (?) in 1997 to get Maddie back from Dimitri.
    • I know it's not happening but on the surface, there's nothing left for Leslie and Eva to do but to hightail it out of town, if they value their lives. Leslie has destroyed Ted's image, embarrassed and humiliated his wife and children, and unearthed the wrath of the entire Dupree family. She's crazier than I thought if she thinks they are just going to let this slide.
