Oh yeah, I forgot about Days' 2001 Christmas special had a memorial of 9/11 there with the cast hanging up ornaments dedicated to the victims of 9/11 in particular FDNY and NYPD.

I remember Guiding Light showed more family scenes and closeness... and I remember that Jerry Van Dorn did a heart-felt speech at the end of an episode, with several members of the cast in silence around him. Then I remember that the next 4th of July in 2002, they did a huge speech about freedom and love of that nation at the Bauer Barbecue.

It was also wisely done as a stand-alone episode where the cast addresses us as themselves instead of their characters, so that no matter what potential preemption may occur, they could still air the Christmas episode on Chistmas.
