I should give a mention to the 1976 or so (!) episode of Alice where Mel's old football pal, now a spaghetti Western actor, visited, and quickly befriended Alice and her son Tommy. When Mel learned that his friend was gay, he was disgusted, especially since the guy and Tommy were going on a camping trip. For a moment, even Alice was concerned, but quickly stopped herself, realizing that nothing was going to happen. This was an extremely brave episode, especially for that time.

There was also an episode that would not ever be made today where Tommy wanted to go out hunting with Mel, couldn't wait to go, and was then traumatized over killing a deer.

People see the final season of "A Different World" as a disaster? That's incredible to me, because I felt like the producers had done a good job transitioning to newer characters in case the show had gone any further.

Meanwhile, remember the VSE of ADW that had Gina and her rapper boyfriend who beat her and made her wear ugly-ass shoes?

I've heard that sometimes, that people didn't like the change in tone, or the new characters. I enjoyed most of the last season and thought most of the changes were necessary but I've always sort of felt in the minority there.

I do remember that one.

They also had that first season episode with the woman who attended classes but wasn't actually a student. I remember it mostly because the woman had played on something else, but now I've blanked it out.

Wow, never saw that first ep you mention. As for the second one, the same thing happened on Silver Spoons. Rick went hunting with grandfather and was traumatized when he shot the deer... And they really freaking fell a deer! As the credits rolled, RS did a vo saying that the deer had not been harmed, just a tranquilizer... Yikes, but still...

Mammy Dearest is my favorite episode of ADW.

I really liked ADW in the last season, but I would have preferred giving Whitley/Dwayne their own show and leaving the original to the college kids plus Freddie/Ron/Kim, etc.(but considering how bad the show tanked after TCS left the air I guess neither would have worked. Also didn't like Jada Pinkett's character getting all the shine, I preferred Gina and her VSE was another fave.

Hate and I mean HATE the episode of Good Times episode with Florida as a bus driver and having a hearing impaired student. That cliffhanger was corny as hell.

    • Eva/Thomas really do have good chemistry and I think a lot of it has to do with Ambyr's ability to flirt well.

    • I actually thought it was a dig at Haley too when I heard it lol.
    • I would be fascinated to see the GL episode counts from that time, if they existed. Six years seems like a long time, but Reva was front burner 24/7. I don't see how she could've done episodic tv. The only breaks she really got were her maternity leaves. And it's not like even the late '90's when there were shows shooting in NY (well, mostly L&O). Jordan and Robert have the best brother chemistry.
    • I've been pondering how strange it is that in real life NLG was being more supportive of Haley Pullos than I would have been ....  and now Alexis is doing that for Kristina.
    • Natalia worrying about her dress getting dirty during her DUI arrest had to be a reference to Haley Pullos and the $400 shirt.   The birth scene was really good. It could have been OTT but wasn't. There was this great moment was Michael was talking about how he's seen every sonogram and been with her all the way where it registered with Willow that he's been extremely involved with this and she had no idea but then couldn't say anything because she's obviously cheating too. And then they acknowledged each other and he actually thanked her. It was very humanizing for both characters.
    • This show treats Claire like a glorified extra prop not the granddaughter of the 2 biggest supercouples this show has ever had. I don't think was ever invested in Claire nor writing for her & her connections to majority of the town. What a waste of a legacy character with so much potential
    • Kim Zimmer could have had a nice career as a supporting actress in Hollywood, but that does not appear to be what she wanted. That's fine, but in the eighties, she was not going to have many options as a leading actress. The eighties were brutal for a performer like her.  Her one big film role lasted a minute or two. Even while she was on GL, she should have been doing episodic television. Was her agent that incompetent or was she just bad at auditioning? Her episode of "Designing Women" was quite popular and was discussed at the time for its subject matter, but she never followed up on it. It's bizarre to me.
