I liked her work there better than her soap run.

This was already posted on SON obviously, so just skip if you've already seen it.. I just wanted to comment that I found the interview on its construction interesting. And, the photos in those articles -- the perspective of its actual size BTS being narrow, to the size it's intended to seem.

THE JOURNAL NEWS, SUNDAY, JUNE 6, 1982

Former 'General Hospital' writer diagnoses its plot by Lynda Hirsch.

Does a writer ever think about his characters once he’s left the show he scripted for? You bet — especially if the writer is Doug Marland and one of his classics is “General Hospital” in its heyday. Marland is now head writer of “Guiding Light.” At a recent meeting, Doug and I discussed “General Hospital” and what he would have done with the characters had he had a chance to bring his ideas to fruition. For example, Luke.

Says Doug, “I never would ,have had Luke rape Laura. My idea for that story was to have Luke worship Laura from afar. I planned for him to get into deeper and deeper trouble with the syndicate and try and try to get away from them. His reason to escape the mob: his love of Laura and his desire for her. And in the end, no matter what Luke had done for Laura —all the money he had given her, all the trouble he had gotten into in her behalf-she would never have loved him.

I adored the character of Laura, but she was vain. Vanity was a big part of Laura’s personality. Luke and Laura never would have gotten together in my storyline. I had other things in mind for Luke.” Marland also had other things in mind for the characters of Brian and Claudia. He feels the two black characters were important to the show and had a storyline set to go for them but exited “General Hospital” before he could do it. » Marland is very interested in having a black couple on "Guiding Light” and is working to that end; however, he explains, “I just don’t want two actors hanging around the show without a storyline. It’s unfair to the performers and audience to have ^tokens’ of any group marking time on the air. I hope in six months to be able to do the storyline I want to. Certainly Procter & Gamble is very open and will let me do whatever I want. I have other storylines to tie up before I can focus on an important black storyline. But it’s in the works and will be on the air shortly.”

We never did get that at GL (I guess he may have been the one who brought in Giancarlo Esposito).

I wonder what his plans for Bryan and Claudia were.
