I watched a bit more of the tailend of September 1990. Now that the show has moved away from the adventure stories, I find the writing much more engaging, but I would love to see what the ratings looked like as I imagine the action oriented material was more appealing.

In the recent set of episodes, Lucy is continuing to fake her pregnancy. I like that she keeps trying to get Alan into bed, but he is already checked out of their marriage (and not necessarily intentionally). He is supporting Monica with Aunt Charlene, who has had a cardiac issue, and he just seems to be a crap husband because he is focused on his career. This doesn't seem like anything new though, is it? As a result, Lucy tries to get inseminated at a sperm bank (but the doctor recognizes Lucy from the society pages). Then, she tries to convince Tony Jones to have a one-night stand (Alan and Bobbie are working on the adoption projecft and Lucy implies that Alan and Bobbie's relationship might be more than professional). Tony rejects her steam room seduction at Body Heat. Eventually, Lucy scores with Larry Ashton's visiting pal, wildlife photographer Gunther, only when she wakes up she learns she didn't bed down with Gunther, but Scott. This would never fly today.

In Scott's other relationship, he continues to fight off the constantly hungry Tracy Quartermaine who wants Scott in her bedroom more than in the boardroom. The back and forth between Tracy and Scott is fun. Tracy taking charge at ELQ is also fun to watch and has led to the rather soapy stretch that she just needs her father's former financial advisor Cheryl Stansbury to arrive in town.

Cheryl's return in terms of story potential makes sense, but the actual day to day stuff is a bit much. Tracy needs her. When Bobbie decides she needs to work with a non-profit that specializes in adoption for her own work, it is Cheryl who is her contact at the agency. There are also some heavy handed moments between Frisco, Robert, and Lucas where Frisco suggests that Robert should get use to fatherhood.

The Robert / Katherine dynamic hasn't been my favorite. Lehman is a fine actress, but Katherine is out of place in this environment. Cheryl appears to be coming back for Robert and they will be connected through the rewrite (it is a rewrite?) that Cheryl believes Lucas is Robert's son. I can't say I am sorry to see this winding down. Cheryl's return really threatens to give Bobbie and Tony a much needed story... which leads to another clue dropped in recent episodes.

Frisco is talking about impending fatherhood and I believe Monica mentions that he will end up like his father. Frisco has no intention of being like his father, and alludes to the tension between them. In a few weeks, Frisco and Tony's former stepmother Rita Lloyd-Jones will arrive. I like the drama that is building with the potential of Cheryl coming back and threatening Bobbie's happiness with Lucas and how Tony's former stepmother/lover returning adds another layer of complication to the story. The show is shifting into more domestic stories and I cannot be happier.

I feel like Felicia has been pregnant forever, but the show seems to delay handling actresses pregnancies. Jackie Zeman was very pregnant at one point. Lynn Herring is very visibly pregnant while Lucy fakes her six week pregnancy. Kristina Wagner has looked due since about May. It's just very noticeable when they are happening one after another.

The Dawn / Decker / Ned stuff is just very run of the mill. It's a lull for them. Dawn has returned to the hospital. She seems to have forgiven Monica and Ned for their past, but won't let Ned off for his recent indiscretion with Wendy. I think Dawn is also unaware that Decker and Wendy also bedded down at one point when Decker was claiming to be Ned Ashton. Charlene's illness has brought the two into the same orbit. It's low level angst. I think Michael Watson is an engaging performer and Jennifer Guthrie is growing on me despite the general whiny attitude Dawn has. Dawn and Decker's lull has allowed Dawn to play a strong supporting role in a development in another story.

Dawn returns to Port Charles and learns that her best friend Meg has married Harrison Davis. This should be no surprise to Dawn as Meg has had a crush on Harrison since day 1. Meg holds her own though. Alexia Robinson really comes into her own in September when she is forced to defend her decision to her friend and then later confronts Simone over Tom's threats on Harrison. Robinson and Williams would be driving story for years if they had been white. It's hard to get a sense of Kevin Best's performance as Harrison has a tendency to be so one-note. Though Simone's dialogue suggests Harrison is a cunning and manipulative man, and, while he certainly married Meg for a reason, I don't feel we get a sense of all the inner workings of Harrison from Best. There was a great moment though when Meg confronts Harrison about their marriage and its role in the custody case where Meg knows her part and is okay with it since she loves Harrison.

The custody story has been fun to see play out. Meg goes to Audrey to resign from the nursing program because she plans on being a full time wife leading Audrey to warn Meg about the trouble she is in with Harrison. Tom's hostile behavior is increasing, which I can see since the episodes back in Janaury, and it has led to a nasty conflict with Harrison at his and Meg's condo. It seems clear this would be an issue in the custody case, but everything will wrap up quickly next month, which is a shame.

The show seems to have pushed Carla, Rico, and Colton's love triangle to the front burner with some major complications. Rico has proposed to Carla, who rejects his offer of marriage, but Rico doesn't accept the rejection. He shows Carla a letter he has written to her mother asking for her hand and proceeds to rape her on the couch of her apartment. The rape scene has some of the cringest dialogue: "I am Rico Chaccone and I take what I want!" The follow up leads to the quiet revelation of Frankie returning, finding Carla, and realizing what has happened. Harring and Fortinero are still very green, but when most of their scenes with Scott Thompson Baker (who is very dry) and John Vargas (who is talented but leans into the over the topness because how else do you play a former police recruit turned bodega owner with ties to the overthrow of a fictional South American country) they are relying on their own abilities. I think both characters have potential, but the writing and the acting need work.

The latest adventure plot is one that I actual don't hate because, for once, it centers on General Hospital. President Conmargo of Santa Mauro needs surgery and will be brought to GH to be treated by Tony and Harrison. Conmargo is a dictator with a reputation and there is a large population of refugees from Santa Mauro living in Port Charles. General Stark is a mustache twirling villian. The plan to off Conmargo after getting access to his secret Swiss bank account is foolish, but I can ignore the silly logistics if it is gonna give some people some interesting conflict. What works the most though is this isn't the story dominating the way the adventure plots have in the past.

At the same time, I have also been reading the bible for "Rituals" that Gene Palumbo wrote. It is clear that the Santa Mauro/Carla material is in part a rehash of what Palumbo did/intended to do with Diandra on "Rituals." The refugee who takes a position as a maid with the wealthy family while involved with the noble white hero who gets drawn into the conflict involving the political situation in her homeland with the dictator leader and the guerilla group fighting to overthrow the despot. I'll be curious to see if Diandra's lover Carlos will give me any more insight into Rico Chaccone, who both fascinates me and disappoints me.

Diana really became a central figure almost immediately. And it’s been one tragic melodrama after another. I cannot imagine Brooke Bundy (the only Diana I have seen a lot of)playing this Diana at all. She kind of replaced Jessie as the put upon lead.

Also in two years we had baby/paternity storylines  with sexual assault victims- Audrey/Tom and Diana/Phil.

If I remember it right, Lesley had an affair with Gordon Gray, her teacher and felt pregnant with Laura. The child was said to be born dead but Lesley's father bribed Nurse Miss Roach to exchange the baby with a dead baby. Laura was adopted by the Vinings.

Lesley pursued her studies and married Bruce Williams. They had a boy. Bruce left his wife because he was having an affair with Augusta McLeod. After Lesley and Bruce's baby died from cot child death, Bruce killed himself. Lesley left Chicago for Port Charles to have a new beginning.

The last listing of Kent (Mark Hamill) in the cast is 30 April 1973, the summary for that episode says that Jessie returns home to learn from Kent that Carol and Teddy eloped.  No mention is made of what became of Kent in the summaries after that date.

Bridget Dobson and Deborah Hardy surely got things back together upon returning from the WGA strike.  October 1973 is firing on all cylinders.

Take a look!

Monday, October 1, 1973: Jim calls Steve to tell him that his car broke down on the way to the mountains; asks him to reschedule a budget meeting; Audrey and Jim share a happy time at the mountain lodge, though she doesn’t believe Jim’s contention that Steve suggested her getaway to keep her from him; Peter tells Diana she will probably have to have a hysterectomy; Diana is stricken.

Tuesday, October 2: Augusta snubs Phil and reserves her attentions for Peter.  Jessie tries to reassure and console Diana.  Jim is furious that Steve continued on with the budget meeting for the cardiac unit without him; Jim accuses Steve of intervening on the meeting out of jealousy.

Wednesday, October 3: Diana is scheduled for surgery; Lesley visits and finds Diana distraught; Diana confesses her fall wasn’t an accident; Peter slips into the nursery and examines the baby, and finds that she is perfect in all respects.

Thursday, October 4: Lesley hypothetically asks Lee if a woman is pregnant after being forced, does the man have rights to the child; Lee answers that the man would not, and is guilty of a crime and could be prosecuted.  Phil comes to Diana’s room to get her to admit that the baby is his; Diana, near hysteria, admits nothing.

Friday, October 5: Jane tells Howie how badly she feels for Diana; Howie makes Jane agree that they will have no more children until they have jointly decided to.  Phil pressures Diana, who finally admits the baby is his; Peter finds her hysterical and she refuses to have the surgery.

Monday, October 8: Diana’s doctor tells Peter he cannot be responsible if Diana does not have the surgery; Diana tells Lesley that she told Phil he is the father of her child and that she refused the hysterectomy because having Peter’s child will be the only way she can make it up to him; Peter storms into Phil’s office, accusing Phil of upsetting Diana to the point of refusing the surgery; Phil tells Peter he is the baby’s father, but Peter refuses to believe it.

Tuesday, October 9: Dr. Blake tells Peter that Diana’s condition has worsened and that surgery without delay is essential.  Howie and Henry compare notes on babies and wives; Howie, nervous about Jane wanting more children, sees an article on vasectomy in a medical journal.  Peter quizzes Dr. Blake, and discovers the baby is full term; he realizes that she cannot be his child.

Wednesday, October 10: Audrey returns from her vacation; Steve is disturbed to learn that Jim visited her twice.  Jessie tries to explain to Peter what Diana has gone through, including the fact that Phil raped her; Peter is anguished; he conceals his pain, tells Diana he loves her and pretends to believe the child is his; Diana agrees to the surgery.

Thursday, October 11: Jessie praises Peter for persuading Diana to have the surgery; Diana is doing well.  Howie privately asks Henry about vasectomies.  Diana is serene; Peter repeats his love for her, but does not tell him he knows Phil is the father of her child.

Friday, October 12: Sharon and Henry battle over who should do the night shift with the baby; Lesley admits to Peter she knows that Phil is the father of the baby.  Audrey is uncertain when Jim suggests she transfer to the cardiac unit.  Diana realizes that Peter has changed and fears he knows the truth.

Monday, October 15: Jessie gets a note from Olin, her friend in Europe, and is dismayed to hear he is not well.  Sharon tells Jane she spent the night up with the baby.  Diana tells Lesley she is concerned Peter knows the truth.  Jane finds Howie reading about vasectomies; she is hurt and angry.

Tuesday, October 16: Henry is tired, Sharon triumphant; she lured him into taking the night shift with the baby by threatening to invite her mother for a visit.  Audrey is uncomfortable when Steve asks her if she wants to move to the cardiac unit; she tells him she is happy on the seventh floor and he says that’s enough for her to stay.  Phil traps Augusta and apologizes; she is cold and critical, goads him into telling her that Diana’s baby is his; this diminishes her regard for him.

Wednesday, October 17: Sharon tells Jane that if she wanted a baby, she would just forget a few pills; Jane and Howie quarrel about him having a vasectomy.  Phil finds Diana home alone and tries to talk reasonably to her; when Diana tells him she will not acknowledge his claim on the baby and insists he not tell Peter the truth, Phil almost tells her that Peter already knows, but she insists he leave before he can.

Thursday, October 18: When Jim learns that Audrey has refused to sign the transfer forms, he is incensed.  Lesley hears Jessie’s report about Diana and is furious with Phil; she confronts him, and tells him he is despicable; he says he is only trying to be reasonable, and she tells him that rape is not reason; Phil is startled by the concept of rape applied to his action.

Friday, October 19: Sharon gets a letter from home asking her to come and help since her mother has broken her leg; Henry doesn’t protest.  Phil tries to explain to Lesley that he hopes to befriend Diana and perhaps marry her; Lesley is disgusted.  Neither Jessie or Lesley can think of a way to help Diana.

Monday, October 22: Steve tells Audrey how happy he is that she is staying on the 7th Floor; Steve is disappointed to learn that Audrey is going to have dinner with Jim; Lucille tells Jessie that Steve would do better to be more aggressive in his pursuit of Audrey; Steve feels like giving up, and that Jim is not good husband material; Jim tells Audrey that he would be a bad marriage risk, she disagrees; Jim begs her to marry him anyway, and kisses her.

Tuesday, October 23: Phil tells Jessie he hopes to make a place for himself in Diana’s life.  Sharon and Henry come for Sharon to say goodbye; Linda flirts with Henry.  Mrs. Dawson is shocked by Howie’s idea of a vasectomy.  Phil calls Diana, who threatens him with the police.

Wednesday, October 24: Audrey calls in sick; Steve goes to visit her and brings flowers; Tommy is unfriendly with Steve, but when Jim arrives, Tommy runs to him happily; Steve is hurt.  Lesley tells Jane that Peter is aware that Phil is the baby’s father.  Diana consults with Lee about Phil; she won’t file rape charges.

Thursday, October 25: Lee tries to get hold of Phil, but can’t reach him; Lee confronts Phil and threatens him with felony prosecution; Phil is not scared.

Friday, October 26: Linda continues to flirt with an unresponsive Henry.  Lee reports to Diana that Phil did not scare when he threatened him with prosecution for rape; he tells her that Phil hopes to build a life with her, and she swears she will run to the ends of the earth before she consents; when Phil calls, Diana hangs up on him.  During a thunderstorm, Audrey waits for Jim, who is coming to settle things once and for all; Steve arrives instead with the news that Jim has had an accident and is in surgery.

Been binge watching the Ned/Lois storyline from the very beginning, including the machinations of the ELQ/Damian Smith development negotiations. Currently up to March 1994, and I’ve been intrigued by the scenes with Ned and Damian trying to jostle for Katherine’s and Lucy’s ELQ votes, respectively. It’s fascinating seeing how this interweaves into other stories (Claire Labine’s storytelling is just incredible), and a couple of questions have arisen in my mind as a result:

  • With Damian trying to charm Lucy for her vote, was this where the bet for Damian to sleep with Bobbie came up from?
  • There were a couple of scenes involving the fallout from AJ stealing $100K from the Port Charles Hotel, and Alan bailing him out (Ned and Edward questioned both of them on it). What was the backstory behind the 100K?
