Hmmm...

Jan 2-6, 1995

HH

1. Y&R 8.2/26

2. AMC 6.6/20

3. GH 6.3/20

http://boards.soapop.../28874-january/

That was the week or so after that promo would have aired. I'm sure GH would kill for those ratings now (or even those rankings, even with only 4 soaps on the air - there were 10 at the time).

I think what was Labine-esque was people finding happiness and fun, which there was, amidst the depressing aspects of life that are indeed all too realistic - in a hospital, no less. This era of the show is a cherished part of my youth, and I still love it.

The end of 1995, and so did every other soap - this was during the OJ Simpson trial - except, for whatever reason, James Reilly's DOOL. GH's ratings held steady in the high 5s and low 6s - and remained in the top 3, quite often beating AMC for # 2 - for almost two years. Even after the ratings dropped when the OJ trial started, GH remained up there in ranking until Labine's last 6 months or so, when she reportedly extended her contract to finish the AIDS story that ABC had been stalling on. A writer in her 60s(?) who was admittedly burnt out after writing an hour-long show for two years (and for the first time in her career) staying on to finish one story which was admittedly emotionally difficult to watch was not an ideal creative situation, to be sure, and there were missteps. Add to that the fact that Disney bought ABC in that time period and who knows what kind of newfound meddling she started dealing with. But I still liked much of the show at that time and, considering what came after Labine left, I am very glad we got to see her bring that important story to its conclusion.

Oh, I'm not disagreeing - I think she was at her best on GH and RH and she left a real legacy. I'm just saying that I do think those who feel ratings fell due to depressing material may have a point. I wasn't watching at the time so I can't really say for sure. I just remember reading SOD at that time (around the time I first started) and they mentioned ratings falling by almost an entire point in late 1994, even though this was during the Puerto Rican remote which seemed to be well received by fans.

    • They're contract; anyone in the opening is a contract player.
    • I was watching an episode last night and noticed that Pictionary is taped in Atlanta. It's just a walk for Chandler to the studios.

    • my vote goes to Eden (Belle)! She single handed carried that show on her back !! Best family will probably be The Dingles! I have to say 2024-2025 was a mixed bag on all of them soaps ! But if I had to say which one would be the best I would give it to Emmerdale for Belle/Tom’s storyarc. It went on for too long but at least was written properly compared to others. But I do think Corrie will win best soap for Mason’s storyline  Best storyline… I wish it would be Belle and tom but the abuse story from Hollyoaks will take that 100%
    • I have to push back on this. I just don't believe it. I don't believe MVJ or anyone at BTG operates that way -- seeing a performance in reveal scenes and saying "That actor has to go." If that's the case, why aren't they doing that with other actors? We all know Maurice Johnson is FAR from the weakest actor on this soap. My feeling is that Keith Robinson became available and that someone from BTG wanted him badly from the beginning. I think this recasting was all about Robinson and not about Johnson at all. Yep, and anyone who can't see that isn't paying attention. Calling Brandon Claybon the worst actor on the show is laughable. Tomas, Ashley, and Derek might be recurring, but they're also key characters, so leaving them out of this actor discussion doesn't work. They get plenty of screen time and are on contract. The only way your narrative works about BC being the worst on the show is to ignore the rest of the cast.

    • Brook Lynn has been working my last nerve for at least 2 weeks. I was so relieved when she blurted out her teen queen story to her grandmother who is the most wonderful person in the entire world!
    • Just caught up and these episodes were absolutely amazing! Ambyr Michelle was soooooooooo good, and I felt so bad for Eva, I actually teared up. I love that Andre was nice to her, that was my favorite Andre moment of the series thus far.

I don't need to warn you that if you like this & want to keep it download it. Now, isn't she positively amazing?!!! Well, IMO she is. This is only the first episode that I've got her in. I think there will be more.
    • All true, and all an enormous problem on this show. -- The business stories are maddening because none of it makes any sense, none of it has any connection to the real world. As you said, sitting around and discussing mergers, takeovers, and job switching is not a storyline. -- The deck chairs are constantly rearranged on the Titanic -- that's what this show is. Summer, Chelsea, Sally, and Chloe have been in design for how long? And we've never seen ANYTHING from them. Carrying around an iPad isn't enough. BOLD is terrible, but at least they show us dresses from Kohls and jewelry from Amazon. -- I know it's baked into the DNA of the show, but I will never enjoy seeing Jabot and Newman treat each other as if no other companies exist in the entire world. A new magical line of cosmetics is not going to bring down a company like Jabot. -- This is a writing problem, not a budget problem. An enormous amount of cash is not needed to write compelling business stories and show real products. This is writer LAZINESS.
