The problem is at this point, I think that makes sense for PP--Ijust hope they work on finding fresh blood once they start. It would be very risky, and probably time consuming, for PP to now, while working on how to present these online AND try to get the existing fans, etc, etc, by January, to also be out there seeking brand new blood to then be trained to write soaps. I really think that would be too much to ask from a company brand new to the business.

And this--very true.

I'm not going to comment on OLTL but as much as I like LB and Agnes, I really do wish/hope/pray that there is a co-HW added to the mix. Somebody with a background in something other than soaps: literature, theatre even telenovelas. Somebody who can bring a fresh perspective. But so far I'm not seeing any indication that PP is interested in doing anything different.

I think a fresh, contemporary playwright could add a LOT to the mix. Surely smart people like AN and LB realize the need to get more fresh blood. I found an interview from around the time The City launched, which Agnes helped set up and was story consultant for, she mentions how ABC at the time has a writer's development program but complains that the problem is they only accept applicants who are already involved in television writing--something I found bizarre.

Maybe I'm being foolishly optimistic, but I really do believe that these young guys at PP are savvy and are onto something that may not be immediately apparent. Who knows, maybe they are pulling a WB/UPN and building a network on the backs of a disenfranchised audience before pulling the ultimate bait and switch. Maybe they really don't know what the hell they're doing, but my gut tells me they do, and these young guys wouldn't save "antiquated, ratings poison" soap operas just out of the kindness of their hearts... they have a plan. AMC and OLTL may not be a part of that longterm plan, hence the lack of effort in investing a lot of time and energy into head-hunting for fresh new soap saviors. Or maybe they are, but they're smart enough to start out with people already in the business who will show them the ropes.

No, I'd love to read that. It was Carl. The only black soap scribe article I remember reading is the hooplah ABC made in press releases when Michele Val Jean became HW of GH in Jan 2001. "The first African-American headwriter" etc. McTavish replaced her in four months...

I kinda have the same feeling--and I am optimistc that your last point is what will happen. I don't buy into the belief that they want these soaps jut to get some eyes on their site only to pay zero attention to them and only focus on their own projects.

Ouch. I don't know why she couldn't just praise the show without being a shrew, The irony for me is that I think The Chew would've been a nice addition to the daytime lineup instead of a replacement for soaps. Obviously there's a market for that content. It's a shame one had to die so the other could "live."
