He's one of the hosts of the show I don't mind, but come on, grow a backbone already instead of whining.

I agree, but what good does calling people out do? He's only encouraging the crazy.

That's exactly it. I guess he's frustrated, but I think this is one of those cases where he should just take the high road. There are crazy bad fans for almost everything--I mean I belong to a ballet forum of all places where some fans had to be kicked out after organizing a group threat at one of the Russian company's artistic directors! lol

As I stated before, the 30 minute length would hopefully allow both shows to get back to basics. (Although I concede that there is no guarantee of that.) Furthermore, 30 minutes would require much less of a time investment on the part of viewers. (Others have pointed out that 13-week arcs would do the same thing. However, the 30 mintue length--unlike 13-week arcs--would still keep both shows traditional in nature.)

I think it makes sense too, though keep in mind it sounds like we won't get 5 hour episodes a week regardless (again this is speculation). So it will be less time to invest, at any rate.

Of course back when AMC was 30 mins in the 70s that meant 24-25 minute episodes. Nowadays a daytime soap opera that's 30 mins actually has, once commercials are remove,d more like *17* mins. So depending on what they're going to do with advertising online, the time legnth could wildly fluctuate.

Eric, if AMC and OLTL remain at 60 minutes yet are cut back to no more than three episodes per week (while remaining traditional), this would be perfectly acceptable. This is certainly something I believe would be just as much in these shows' best interests as would 30-minute episodes, five times a week.

Plain common sense states that a start-up venture like PP (even with government assistance) will not have the same type of money that ABC has to spend on these shows.

And, there is most certainly a good business reason for PP to take on AMC, OLTL, and their "crazy ass fans" (your words, not mine), even if this venture turns out to be a failure: by adding these two long-running programs to their internet channel, PP will get far more viewers and name recognition than they ever would have if they started two brand-new soaps (which, IMO, really would be in the best interests of the genre). It is perfectly reasonable to assume that after a year or two, PP (after having gotten their name out and increased website traffic) will drop both shows (in the ultimate act of betrayl towards Nixon soap fans) because they aren't bringing in an adequate amount of profit. With all due respect, the fact that you fail to see such a scenario possibly occurring (and instead assume that PP's motives are purely benevolent) is absolutely mind-boggling.

I do agree--it's obviously smarter for them to initially pick shows that have name recognition and use those to launch original programming. However, I don't think anyone on here thinks if they don't bring in adquate numbers they will last more than a year or so...

This is so true, Erik. If PP was really interested in doing what was best for AMC & OLTL, they would each be cut to 30 minutes (so they could get back to basics). Instead, it looks like (based upon the speculation in this thread and elsewhere) PP is going to go the 13-week "arc" route and/or is going to increase the number of stupid outdoor park scenes.

Erik, I'm so glad that you, Carl, and others have had the courage to criticize PP for not even considering cutting back each soap to a half-hour. If I were to ever originate such a sentiment, a few folks here (though certainly not a majority by any means) would immediately launch into nasty personal attacks stating that I am a "disgrunted P&G soap fan bitter that his soaps didn't get saved" (rather than respond to my comments based on their merits).

You know I feel bad that at least one of the P&G shows could have been green lit to come along with AMC and OLTL.

Ok Im going By what Jerry Ver Dorn has said in two podcast interviews now

PP has liscened the shows and bought the sets, props and wardrobbe and JVD said those things cost Millions.

He said PP met with OLTL and said they want to continue the show as is 5 days a week 52 weeks a year an hour each day

PP also stated that they are not gutting these shows and they want a many cast members to continue on that want too

Plus PP has given all actors proposals and Susan Lucci got the first actual contract offer which according to Deadline matched her current contract at ABC

These folks have Money

PP has produced films like unstopable which grossed over 169 Million dollars

They also produce many musicians and have several Prime time TV shows like Royal Pains & Wilfred and even though their PT shows only film 13 episodes a season they cost more to produce than a full year of AMC/OLTL

These people involved have long careers in this field

They know what they are doing

The Govt Grant is for setting up the actual Internet TV channel itself for which they just hired That Scalvos guy who made millons in internet commerce to head up this venture

These guys know how to produce its just the internet channel that is a new venture

The weird way P&G ended their relationship with soaps though, I coudln't see it happening. They seemed to want out of the industry but also have no interest in anyone else profiteeing in any way from their soaps.

IIRC, Mario Batali showed some backbone and soap fans called him everything but a child of God. Nothing these people say or do is going to make the sour grapes squad happy.

I second the fact that soaps should be a half hour. Unfortunately nowadays, I think, minus commercials, B&B only runs 17-20 minutes. I think for online and even cable they might be able to squeeze out 25 minutes (and maybe cut some for cable to force viewers to view those scenes online?). I think half hour is the way to go. A more focused cast (you can still have many characters, just keep a lot on recurring), less "filler" to have to sit through, less crew and sets, possibly ...

To me, two half hour soaps would be appealing more to cable than programming two hours of soaps, but that's just me. It's easier to package, IMO, as an hour block.

But aren't the shows about 35-38 minutes without commercials anyway?

Thats about right yes
