When we are talking about 504,000 compared to 490,000, I don't think that the advertisers see a difference. But, my main point is that both numbers are bad, and both sets of numbers obviously lead to the cancellations. Advertisers, especially the high end ones, have been deciding to stop putting money into advertising on soaps for years, and when they first started leaving, the soaps were doing a whole lot better than barely drawing 500,000 of the women who they are trying to target. OLTL may be drawing more people than AMC, but the numbers are so low for both shows, and every other soap, that it doesn't matter. That's why the posts about ABC making a mistake, or that they will look silly when OLTL goes off the air don't make any sense.

Does all this really matter anymore? OLTL and AMC are canceled. GH is canceled too but the announcement hasnt been made yet.

My question is ...Toups will you do ratings for only 3 soaps left?

Funny that you don't address the real point. I'll restate it. Usually, no more than 200,000 viewers separate OLTL from AMC. Since we are dealing with such small numbers for both shows, what does it matter? Neither is pulling down the type of numbers in that demo that advertisers want. And from my point of view, this is an insignificant difference. It might put OLTL ahead of AMC, but given the numbers for both shows, who cares?

The fact is, though, you're wrong. The audience for ALL dayparts has dropped, yet advertisers pay more now. Because despite the drop, TV is still the only place they can find that many eyeballs of a certain demo. The View is widely considered a success, yet it only pulls in about 700,000 women in the key demo....and it has done worse than OLTL in the 18-34 female demo the last few weeks. In fact, OLTL was ABC's number one show in the 18-34 female demo last week.

The numbers may be small to you, but advertisers pay a premium for those numbers, because they're not "low" for daytime. Once again, the difference between OLTL and AMC in the key demo is not insignificant, no matter how much you want to believe it.

And I'll say one more thing: I've got no horse in this race. I haven't watched a soap since I stopped watching GH in 2005. Before that, I stopped OLTL in 2003, and AMC way back in 1989. But I still check out the ratings, because I'm kind of a ratings junkie, for all dayparts. But what I notice about people like you on this board who try to argue the difference between AMC and OLTL in the key demo is negligible, is that most of the people who claim this are primarily fans of AMC. As a fan of neither right now, I think my opinion is a lot more objective.

Yes, I'm wrong, that's why networks are dropping soaps as fast as they can, and why so many advertisers have stopped advertising on soaps. They aren't doing it because of the small numbers and how much advertisers are willing to pay for those numbers, they are obviously doing it just to be mean. Advertisers will obviously pay the same amount for time on OLTL or AMC now that they did when those shows had twice as many 18-49 year old female viewers. There haven't been any articles at all over the past few years about big advertisers, like car companies, dropping their support of daytime television. And since the advertisers are paying a premium for these viewers, advertisers cutting their rates had nothing to do with the networks deeply slashing the soaps' budgets every single year. You are so right.

I am not sure where this idea that advertisers are paying more money to advertise on soaps more now than they ever have came from. It's simply not true. They aren't attracting big advertising dollars. The fact that OLTL might command $5000 more for a commerical than THe View does doesn't really mean much(and I am not saying thats ever true). Soaps don't generate the same money they did for the networks, they are no longer cash cows, they no longer support the development of primetime TV shows as they once did. They may still make money but they are no longer a strategic programming option for the networks. If they were the networks would not be cancelling them.

Well, I'm not an AMC fan and I agree with those stating that the numbers are so close statistically that it virtually insignificant except for bragging rights to those who deem to do so. If OLTL was the number one show on ABCD then there is a problem because those numbers are not good which is also a reason why everyone is saying that daytime is not pulling in the ad money anymore. If Hoover is any indication of what advertiser's are paying I can understand because that is not premium cost. Advertiser's are not paying more now where did you get that info from, it has been stated numerous times from varies venues that daytime ad rates have dropped especially with the economy being what it is.

If things were going as you said there wouldn't be this push for alternate, cheaper programming. The reality of the situation is that soaps are doing horribly as a whole, OLTL numbers are not impressive at all, when they start hitting Y&R demo numbers then start talking about the wrong show being cancel until then the network was justified in cancelling the shows.

    • Now coming into June...well...   I knew it was coming but I didn't like the start to the next round of Dani/Bill/Hayley. As the 3 A plots from the start of the show (The SilkPress storyline and Martin's Secret being the other two), it needed to be benched for a while to develop those characters and allow other characters and storylines to grow. 3 months in, Hayley is the weak link, Dani is still divisive, but not boring, and Bill has been making his mark with some plots faster than others. So last week seeing the story starting to loop back around to them with Hayley's potential pregnancy, I honestly had mixed feelings.   I get it. The SilkPress storyline is currently in aftermath/next turn mode, so it has to be moved into a C plot position. Moreso if we want to keep the very talented Miss Trish around. And I love how clever the writers are being with the storyline. They give us enough in the episodes and are still playing out beats to keep the appetite fed. I don't feel like anyone is being dumbed down to keep her around. And Trish is giving nuances in her alone scenes with NuTed. I shouldn't care for a clear psycho, but she be selling it. That said...I wish they had given us a little more of the Martin's Secret storyline in the last week of the month though I loved the game of cat and mouse Bill did on Martin and Smitty to keep the storyline alive and active after it had a nice build beginning of May and vanished for a week mid-May. And it appears like it's about to go back to the backburner as an A plot which of course leaves the A plot of Dani/Bill/Hayley.   I am probably in the minority as someone who is not anti-Dani here and even she annoyed the heck out of me last week. In character true, but I just felt like there was a way to get all of that across without it feeling like...as I've said before...one step forward, two steps back...and have it feel organic. I liked Hayley got a little bit of edge with her, but she still ain't no match for Dani. And it reminds to be seen if we should be going back to that well of a story yet.   Now about today's show...   And I thought Tracy was bad! lol. But YES. Sharon has been worth the wait. And so has Anita's story! Finally having TT in the limelight. This has been a nice slow burn for me and a nice B plot. And the actress is good. The wig is giving. And her holding what Anita's secret is over her head and threatening to tell Vernon....Ooooo...that is what I was waiting for.    And speaking of bad...I thought Eva vs Kat was a great rivalry. But I am loving the rivalry that is growing with 'Nancy Drew' and Silk Press Sheila! They both get good licks in and are so cunning with each other. And I definitely have liked that since the anniversary party, that it has been growing. Now that Kat has been proven right, she has not backed down. And neither has SilkPress. And we got a 'Ms. B@tch' moment, too? LOVE. Eva coming up with a trump card was delicious and so 90s Sami Brady. GOOD. And the coda with Jacob and the expert...YES. The Silk Press storyline has been the best paced on the show so I love that the aftermath of the anniversary party continues to be so...barring one flaw...well for me. Not enough Nicole's POV.   And I like the C plots on display. And by that, I mean Chelsea with Vernon. And it made me wonder what the writers have plan for her love life now that the throuple is over with. I was watching her and going awww.   And of course the mystery man around Martin. I am starting to wonder if he really even works at the country club given how he made a run for it. That would be a twist.    Speaking of Martin...good to see him in scenes with his father and mother.    I'm getting used to NuTed.    I felt the last episode of May was a bit of a letdown, but this was a very nice recovery.
    • Unless they cut him, I'd think he would stay. Surely, he didn't choose to return because he expected high quality. I figure he gets to work when he wants and spend a lot of time doing his own thing and being with his family.
    • The writing for Liz and Lucky is indeed terrible, but if JJ signed a one-year contract he may be gone in a couple of months anyway. Perhaps they’re just cutting their losses.
    • That would be his older sister Stacey. She was the center of a big story back in the day. Nola was out to snag medical student Kelly Nelson, who she thought would provide her with the life she craved. He was in love with a girl named Morgan. Nola plotted to get pregnant by him, but couldn't manage to get him in bed. So she seduced Floyd, who thought she was in love with him. When she knew she was pregnant, she got Kelly drunk and made sure he woke up next to her in bed. Kelly believed her when she told him he made her pregnant. They were about to elope to Las Vegas, but her mother ratted her out and Kelly abandoned her. She almost married Floyd, but jilted him at the altar. She went to work for Quint. When the baby came prematurely, Kelly saved both of them. She named the baby Kelly Louise to irk Morgan, who was now married to Kelly. When she fell in love with Quint, she had a change of heart over all the trouble she had caused, so she changed the baby's name to Anastasia Louise, shortened to Stacey. Quint was a devoted stepfather and Henry treated her like his own granddaughter.  After Quint and Nola leave SF, I believe Stacey is never seen again. Which is odd, you would think they would have brought her back with Nola and J, but they never did.

    • The counts seem small even for B&B. Thanks for posting!
    • Sooo Nick is inviting Sharon to France for this Dumas party thing. The same place they reconnected years ago during the Shick/Phick years. I wonder if it’s going to be on location? I’m going to assume not. I’m sure Y&R doesn’t have that kind of budget anymore.
