2010 was not a great year for RC but while I remember most of these details, I don't remember Melinda at all

She was murdered offscreen. Do not ask about her sculpture. Some sort of grotesque clay vase with a clue inside that became a major plot point. Oy vey.

The scenes setting all this up were so goofy. Mitch was back in this period, and had warned Dorian he would kill one of the Cramer women as retribution against her. So then you had Dorian frantically calling all the Cramers home (I think Adriana too) in early 2010, and you'd get these teases of stuff like Cassie on an airplane, getting nauseous so we'd think she was poisoned, or other Cramers in potentially dangerous cutaway situations, and they were hyping up which Cramer will it be?

It was even worse when the Cramer girls started filing into La Boulaie and Dorian would get progressively more hysterical, howling at the top of her lungs thinking [Addie/Blair/Adriana/Langston/Starr/Kelly] who isn't there is surely dead over and over, "aieee!!" and then they'd finally burst in and be like 'oh Dorian, it's alright, I'm here' and Dorian would scream with relief and sob, then there would be another Cramer who isn't there and another commercial break or cut, and so on. It was like bad sketch comedy. This went on and on til they got to Cassie and Robin Strasser is basically going up to beyond 11, "Cassie! Cassieee!!!" and finally LB and Bob Krimmer burst in and Dorian is howling with relief again. I adore Robin but it was not her finest hour. But the whole setup was so ridiculous.

Then finally they realize, oh, it's Melinda, the one woman who can't be there and hasn't been since (in a very brief cameo) 2004. A total damp squib lol.

OK I do remember that (Cassie nauseous on an airplane brought it all back...) So umm did Mitch kill Melinda?

Re: Jessica Morris. So interesting to read so many people who dislike her because I came across so many soap columns/letters praising her performances during Sam's death. When I saw her work, I thought she was wonderful. I also liked her as an antagonist against Natalie and I always rooted for her to win as I always found Natalie an absolute bore. Admittedly, I did not see much of her work prior to Sam's death.

I thank you all of you for your summaries and clarifications. I still can't believe how wretched so much of this sounds. I thought what I had seen of JFP's OLTL was bad but I didn't realize it was this bad. Yet Slezak thinks Gottlieb was the worst of the bunch.

No! In the end it was all Eli like I said, for no sensible reason. Eli murdered Melinda out of state! Eli pushed Marty down the stairs! Eli faked Téa's terminal cancer! RC was stuck In a corner on multiple plots and decided to pin it on Eli, which was a shame since he was popular with KDP/Blair.

I forgot to add, they even teased it to the last drop on Cassie in those ridiculous Cramer scenes, with Andrew coming through the door before her IIRC and being like 'Dorian, I'm afraid I have some bad news' lol. Cut to another scene! Ron was shameless with this schlock by then.

And when we finally cut back to La Boulaie Robin is all but waking the dead shrieking about Cassie, who was just outside parking the car or something. This is the kind of lazy tease he perfected later at GH tbh.

More power to you if you liked her. She certainly had her fans in Malone II later on (it was Malone who killed Sam when he arrived in '03). But what I remember is her being universally despised as wooden when Gary Tomlin first made her the young star of the show in 2001-02. Cristian and Jen was his big youth couple, but fans grew to hate her because at that time JM couldn't act and was on everyday. Then Natalie came along, became a hit with the audience and had heat with David Fumero, and the audience was talking about it. So Tomlin responded to that fan feedback, switched it up, turned Jen bad and went with Cris and Natalie in the summer/fall of '02.

Of course that big couple in turn lost all their airtime as soon as Malone II began, Frons took over and Malone was clearly eager to reestablish the newly-recast Jessica as a lead heroine, whereas Tomlin had shortchanged Erin Torpey for Natalie, Jen and others and probably helped drive Erin to leave. The more things change, etc.

Melissa Archer had such drive and star power early on. It didn't take long before the show saw her as an afterthought, shackled to worthless McBain or having to endlessly stand in the background of her wretchedly acted sister, but I do appreciate those early days. Hearing her on Haven Falls, she doesn't exactly have a central role, but it makes me nostalgic.

(I was writing a lot of this for later while you were posting so please don't think I type this fast!)

In fairness they were probably kind of waiting out David Fumero, who was obviously planning to leave at the end of his contract late in '03 and everyone knew it. But yes, almost overnight Natalie and Cristian went from the stars of the show to being backgrounded while Malone II became very focused on Bree Williamson's new Jessica, Antonio, Mitch's rampage, Jen/Joey/Flash, later Walker/Todd/Victor, Al and Marcie, etc.

Once Fumero's exit story was set up and they'd hired Michael Easton off Port Charles in the fall*, Natalie's airtime shot way up and she stayed a major lead again in late '03 throughout all of 2004, because John McBain and Natalie were Malone's big new couple and ME was Frons' ideal leading man. I think once Malone actually wrote for Natalie he did fairly well for awhile, though he also reheated a lot of Marty stuff for her (with Paul Cramer, etc). She came by it more honestly than Jen, because Natalie was a natural Marty successor IMO. I was very into John and Natalie initially. I thought Easton arrived working hard (even if I never liked any of John's extended family much, particularly his creepy mom, with the exception of Chris Stack's later Michael). But John and Natalie as a couple pretty much fell apart for me after the climax of the initial Music Box Killer story (which was far from genius but had its highlights I've pored over before) in spring 2004, and never recovered or regained my interest. Because John was a very grown man who could not and would not commit emotionally to a woman, any woman, and that began the cycle of Natalie beginning to be demeaned for him for years to come. It didn't help that the next HW, Dena Higley, clearly despised Natalie unlike Malone, and that was during the period FV very nearly recast or killed her off because (according to Melissa Archer) she didn't want to be lowballed on a contract re-negotiation. (HBS also almost got killed off during the Higley era, and spent months in a contract coma til I think the network intervened.)

*(John also pretty much replaced JDP/Max as Natalie's mentor in the "Natalie the pool shark" saga that led to evil Walker Flynn and Cristian's "death," but that's a whole other tangent lol. Max was hired on by Viki to run Ben's old bar Crossroads in spring or summer '03 but only lasted about 10 minutes.)

I also was not watching on a day to day basis for her early run so I might have had the good fortune to tune in for JM's best episodes. However, I liked Tomlin's OLTL and I did watch on a daily basis (although I skipped the Todd/Tea island nonsense) and I did like b*tchy Jen. I also was not a fan of Natalie so that could have influenced me a bit. There was just something about Natalie that I found insufferable. MY grandmother was definitely a Natalie fan.

RE: Strasser/Dorian/Dano

Was there any crossover with Dano and Strasser being on OLTL? I wonder if they ever talked about the rumors of JFP wanting to recast Dorian with Dano.

I don't think that was ever going to happen. IIRC originally either Jill or Angela Shapiro/ABC tried to secure the Felicia Gallant character from AW for OLTL and couldn't.

Rae and Dorian overlapped in the late '70s/early '80s, and in '99-2000 and in 2003-early '04. They shared a couple scenes I can't remember in '99/'00, I think briefly stirring the embers of their ancient feud from decades before. I can't recall if they shared any scenes afterwards though I doubt it.

Malone in 2003 had very little use for Rae and downgraded her already barely-there story. Rae was wildly unpopular with the audience outside of JFP, and once Jill left for GH in '01 Gary Tomlin quickly caught on to the audience antipathy and treated her as essentially a joke in 2002 - with Rae turning out to be a fraud psychiatrist, etc which was admittedly very satisfying lol. Viki turned on her hard. Tomlin then was threatening to put her with Asa (I think she blackmailed him into marriage) but Malone II swiftly ended that, and I think almost put Asa with Roxy but that also didn't happen.

Anyway, the most Rae got for most of 2003 was a cringeworthy series of chemistry tests with Hank Gannon (touch football with Linda Dano! I am not kidding) right before he was written out offscreen and replaced with Mark Dobies' Daniel Colson, who said the mayor had fired Hank and that he was now teaching at Llanview U off-camera. Then she barely appeared til she began consulting with the cops on the Music Box Killer serial killer case, and was captured and 'killed' by MBK/Stephen Haver in early '04, which were actually very disturbing scenes I've complimented in the past. Then Rae turned up alive (sigh) and finally left for a HEA with John Bolger's John Sykes after Haver was offed.

Who can forget Rae being the cause of Niki returning for months of hell? She should have been shot out of a cannon just for that.

I think Rae was also treated as a moron in the tedious story about Al faking his paralysis. IIRC, Anna Stuart filled in for a few days during this plot (those episodes must be somewhere, haven't bothered to check in detail).

I had forgotten about her blackmailing Asa into marriage. That might have been interesting just because other than her earliest AW days and when Felicia was a heavy drunk, Linda Dano never got to play a real bitch.

I think that was when Viki tore her apart, after that mess ended and Viki was back and had learned the truth about Rae. Great stuff, and Rae was so pathetic and mewling. I do remember the Anna Stuart fill-in you mentioned but I couldn't tell you when it was.

Before someone asks about Roxy and Max/Roxy, I'm afraid my ludicrously obsessive mind for all things latter-day OLTL already has you covered. I think JDP has hinted at other parties ending Max and Roxy in '03, whereas IIRC he was all aboard for the pairing. My suspicion is Brian Frons, who had zero interest in the Holdens and had all of them wiped out by the end of 2003. The Asa/Roxy tests in that period felt like Malone trying for something else but it went nowhere. He did use Roxy a lot (and created Foxy Roxy's Hair Haven for her). Malone also did an unbelievably bad 'Nigel and Roxy are hypnotized into falling in love' subplot, which was like something they'd show on closed-circuit prison TV at Abu Ghraib.

It is worth mentioning (maybe?) that Max also had a weird seemingly chemistry test scene with, of all people, Barbara Niven's MILF bimbo Liz Reynolds (mother of Keri, slept with Antonio) a week or two before or after Malone II's official start date in late January or February 2003, two strangers sharing their troubles (like Liz sleeping with her daughter's fiance). This was right before the annoying Liz was dismissed and killed offscreen in a plane crash like a month later. Maybe it was just to fill the actor's guarantees.
