What will you do if they start putting meters on broadband use?

It definitely seems to be gaining alot of traction in the public consciousness now. 3 people today asked me if I had heard about this. I have no issue with capping usage on an "unlimited" plan, but it should be a reasonable amount, and really the only ones who should be affected are the people who are downloading an insane amount. Also, if you don't reach that usage bar in one month, the unused portion should be carried over IMO.

I checked my usage, and I've downloaded 18GB... so I am not too worried about this for me personally, but I understand I am on the low end of the spectrum. I have not been subjected to caps as I use an ISP that essentially piggybacks off of Bell which owns the lines.

in New Zealand most (if not all) ISPs meter their broadband - unlimited broadband basically caused so called "network hogs" to use download so much they slowed down everything for everyone else (being an archipeligo 1200 miles away from our closest neighbours in Australia means that obviously have great infrastructure constraints).

Plus ISP's in New Zealand have had problems guaranteeing a set speed (many people found that they were not getting the speeds they were supposed to get) so most (not all but most) find it easier just to tell you your speed will be as fast as your particular line will allow (and this can be anywhere between 256Kbit/s and 24Mbit/s depending on whether your unfortunate or fortunate, though the vast majority would be capable of speeds between 2Mbit/s and 8Mbit/s) and say that their charging you for your usage instead (so you pay more for a higher limit rather than a faster speed)

Basically what a lot of ISP's do here is they throttle you down to 64Kbit/s once you reach your monthly limit. You then can either stick with that for the rest of the monthor purchase more data. I'm posting here tonight because for the first time ever I have exceeded my 20GB limit so i'm stuck at 64Kbit/s until Friday when my limit is reset (it resets on the 11th of each month).

And guess who is to blame (well not really, but it's fun blaming him!) for me exceeding my limit this month? None other than Robert Guza Jr for making Brenda's return so boring I fell nearly three months behind GH! So I spent the last two weeks or so finally catching up (i'm up to January 5th at the moment) and before you ask I only have enough space on my computer to have about a weeks worth of episodes at any one time (I'm a hoarder so that trait extends to my computer files!) so I couldn't download as they aired and watch them when I felt like it!

Wait a minute...so you guys in the States can download as many GBs as you want? I'm with Rogers and I pay $47 (before tax) for 60 GBs a month with "Up to 10 Mbps" for downloads. And then for every GB I go over, I pay $2. What is it like over in Europe?

Here in Australia I pay about $200.00 a month. But this is includes my cable on the top package, my wifi of 100GB a month and my landline, which is a T-Hub that also has internet access. I have 2 computer's 1 laptop, a landline and my iPhone connected to my internet connection. Occasionally there will be another couple of laptops and phones connected and that is when my sister, neice and nephew are here.

Before I got this bundle my monthly phone bill was over $300.00 a month which also included my iPhone, now I pay about $50.00 less a month.

Am I the only one who believes American companies will not do this?

These companies want as much money from you as possible. There's no way they will send you a pop-up saying you're almost over your download limit. They want to charge people the two dollars per extra GB just to stick it to people. Look at the way cellphone companies are ran. If someone has a limited amount of texts, they don't send you a warning when you are nearing the end of that. They just keep tacking it on, charging you extra.

I think so too........

Heck I'm just charged a monthly fee, I have my phone, internet and cable in one triple play bundle and can download as much as I want(which is not much at all LOL) and just pay the monthly rate and nothing more

I just got a laptop when my other puter died a few days ago and only pay like an extra $5 a month for the wireless. I truly love my cable co LOL

That is something like what I have, the internet, cable, landline and cellphone all on one bill. I can connect as many computers/laptops/cell phones to my internet as I want with no extra charge. If by any chance which is very slim we go over our data allowance the internet just slows down to dial up speed.

I pay like $129 a month for everything. That includes the DVR fee, the digital cable(which is required if you want a DVR) and internet, phone and cable. That rate is set for two years

Cancel my internet. I'm serious. I'm pretty tired of them trying to limit what we do. The government has gone overboard.

Society as a whole has gone to hell in a handbasket. I'd rather live in the woods than be told how to run my life by other humans.
