Thanks. I never really knew where that story was going.

I have some of 98 on tape, as I loved a lot of 98, probably my favorite year from the time I started watching Y&R. I miss silly, fun little things like Nina and Lynn unwittingly going on a date with two gay men. I can't see the show having anything like that now. And Tricia was so good at both comedy and drama.

They could do anything with Nina -- and yet back then there was less propping and agendas, people seemed more natural. I remember when Jill told Nina she should lose weight to keep Ryan. I was offended on Nina's behalf, but it was in character for Jill, so I was not really worked up the way I might be now, where they would have Jill throw pies at her, only to fall over and break a hip, and then Chloe and Kevin would show up and point at them and laugh.

Nina & Jill's relationship was ALWAYS (even with Brenda Dickson as Jill) awesome & to Bill's credit (as well as Jess & Tricia) he never sacrificed either character to prop the other.

It also is a perfect example of how unnecessary it always was to retcon Chloe into Kate.

It was a horrible rewrite that further marginalized Mackenzie, made Katherine/Esther into idiots & exists solely to give Chloe constant unearned sympathy.

I meant to ask this earlier but I could never figure out if Cole and Nina ever did sleep together. I know they came dangerously close but when it was later mentioned I just assumed I must have missed the episodes where they did the actual deed, and from what I recall so did others. I guess Y&R really hadn't been known for retconning history back then aside from the SOARSing of Nick and Victoria. Heck in those early soap forums I'm still not sure what truly happened to Carl Williams on Y&R in 1990.

From what I remember, they decided not to sleep together. There wasn't any ambiguity. I might be wrong though. Then when it was time for Ryan/Tricia, the show said that they had slept together after all.

This was also around the time of that big retcon that John's secretary had lied to Dina that she and John were having an affair and that's why Dina left Genoa City and abandoned her kids. That story was dropped very quickly, even though they could have had some material out of it.

    • This is (maybe) overly simplistic and nonsoapy, but Doug needs to go to Gamblers Anonymous, to deal with the addictive neurological excitement hits that gambling gives him - and which control his life. Vanessa needs to go to therapy to find ways to remain healthfully lusty and sex-positive, but to stay away from anyone who would demean her.
    • YT keeps commending GL clips to me. I discovered Kathleen Cullen was on in Christmas 1987. Was there any talk of making it permanent  or was this just a special visit? I wish they had made the visit permanent. I liked her chemistry with Grant Aleksander.
    • I'm not sure it's as unpopular as you think.  I just think the show knew they were in a bind, and needed a proven couple for the viewers to invest in. Trying to reunite Vanessa and Ross had just failed in 87. I don't think Ed and Holly's affair was well received, as Simon and Garrett had a brother/sister chemistry. Enter Billy and Vanessa, who give you history and an out not to try and do a Josh/Reva/Billy triangle, which would've really wrecked the relationship between Josh and Billy. I'd have been ok with trying Vanessa/Ross again, and doing a Vanessa/Ross/Holly/Billy quad for a while. I hated Nadine. HATED. She had to be the most insufferable also-ran before ATWT's Julia Lindsay. This is where I wish I knew Roger's history better.

    • GROSS. Michael Swan was hot back in his ATWT days. Now he's 76 and WAY past his hot years.
    • Since she kidnapped, locked up and tried to kill her father's wife I'd say that is still a pretty big deal
    • I'm good with the gushing, too. There aren't many soap icons like John Black, and that's important to celebrate and remember. And yes, life does go on for other characters, but as they say, timing is everything. Going sky diving the day before the funeral? And during a week of shows that were so powerful emotionally? No.
    • No. There might have been a slight pause for dramatic effect after his "death," but pretty soon after they showed him in France getting plastic surgery and getting involved with his doctor, then planning with her to bring Christina to France. (She thought he had good reason to do it; she wasn't a bad person or anything). Now that I think of it, there must have been some kind of pause before that, during the 70s. Rita was accused of killing a private patient for an inheritance when she lived in Texas. Part of the backstory was that Roger had been there, too. Not sure exactly when or how long that was.
    • I've already stated that I don't like Doug being written as this meek and submissive. It was so lame watching him leave her like that. Vanessa can divorce him, but she then needs to get her thot ass into therapy. She's not only having sex with every guy she runs into, but is now having  sex with a skeevy perv on a poker table. I'm going to give the BTG some credit here. For months, many on this board were delighting in the Vanessa/Joey flirting and what they saw as chemistry. I think we're now seeing what the writers always intended -- that Joey is a disgusting POS wannabe mobster.
