High Hopes

  • Members

From Chris Schemering's book, Soap Opera Encyclopedia

Taped in Toronto, this was the first soap to be broadcast simultaneously in the United States and Canada. It was aired over the CBC network in Canada and over independent stations in the U.S., premiering on most of them on April 3, 1978. High Hopes delved into family counseling as psychiatrist Neal Chapman solved the problems of others while his own troubles mounted. Critics complained that early episodes contained too many storylines and the viewer was bombarded with too many characters and situations. Later in the show's short run, in a buzz of publicity, Dorothy Malone of Peyton Place fame was added to the cast. The half-hour serial was written by Winifred Wolfe, directed by Bruce Minnix, and produced by Robert M. Driscoll.

Cast

Dr. Neal Chapman - Bruce Gray

Paula Myles - Nuala Fitzgerald

It's a shame this didn't succeed. I saw the opening episode years ago and it was nothing to write home about, but it really does sound like the show was building towards something by the end of the show's run. Once they realized they needed to move away from the short plots, the long story sounded fairly decent with Paula and Michael and the Stewart family's secrets.

Thanks, Carl. I don't think I say that enough.

I like Van Johnson too - just loved him in The Good Old Summertime.

Thanks both of you for reading this. I really appreciate it.

I was wondering about 2 characters. Was Marie Tauss,Carol and Victor's daughter on the show? Did anyone watch this show? Who was Dr. Jean Bataille? Anyone know who played him'her?

Based on the summaries Lynda Hirsch published, it sounds like Marie appeared on the show. Years ago, I saw the April premier at the Paley Center when it was still called the Museum of Television and Radio. The Tauss family was introduced until the summertime.

Dr. Jean Bataille was listed in the Montreal article I posted earlier as well as an CBC website that may or may not exist. I'm not sure Jean exists as a lot of the details listed in that article never seemed to come to fruition. If you can confirm one way or another, please share.
