Writing out Linda and Stephanie in 1980 was a big mistake. There was so much that could have been done with both characters in the aftermath of Bob’s death, and the reveal that Stephanie was Brooke.

I can understand them writing out all the deadweight characters. And even Bob and Phyllis too (agreed that the two of them did pretty much run their course by that point), but what were Al Rabin/Elizabeth Harrower/the network, whoever, thinking when they decided that the two of them had to go?

Stephanie doesn't need another man fighting for her on Days, but I believe Nathan/Stephanie were a couple at some point.   I never found Nathan terribly interesting and mostly remember him chasing Melanie, but I think you could tie him in on Maggie's side.  The Horton house is pretty full these days lol.  There are quite a few men in Nathan's age range currently on the cast though.

I don't think we ever even found out who Nathan's father was, so there are places you could go with the character.  Plus the show can always use another doctor.  Frankly, I am surprised the show didn't recast him years ago when the character was more relevant.

He made some comments in the media about how he was better than the show, etc. Then I think tried to beg his way back into the job later.

Nathan would be very recastable. As mentioned above, he was engaged to Stephanie, Maggie's his grandma, Sarah's his aunt, Holly is his cousin, he had a little rivalry with Philip, plus he has the Horton ties *and* a dad who was never identified. Mostly he could be a useful relatively blank slate.

I haven't read where he actually said he was "better" than the show and now want to, but he made a lot of public digs at the writing and it wasn't an amicable parting.  Hapka just sounded bitter and immature.  I doubt the show would ever ask Mark Hapka back.  His two years on the show weren't memorable enough.

I could see him coming back perhaps even with a son/daughter Holly or Tate's age.  Like you said Nathan wasn't very defined.  You could make Nathan almost anything.  Bringing Nathan back would have been much better than that whole Bobby/Everett/Blake Berris situation we got instead lol.

Yeah, I could be over-stating it, but I just found a quote where he said he didn't get "a fair chance to show [his] ability" and was critical of "the collaborative process" at Days and then immediately said he wasn't talking sh*t and just being honest. It felt like a lot of that around the time of his exit. I'm sure some of it was trying to save face, too.

Oh, I don't doubt you.  I remember hearing several eye rolling quotes from Hapka when he was fired.  I know he had a big issue with the Melanie/Nathan romance and how the show built it up only to just randomly fire him before they reunited which was basically Nathan's entire arc.  I actually think some of MH's points were probably valid.  He just came off like an entitled jerk who was too good for his role.  Judging by his (lack of) work since then he may have overestimated his talent.  He was a good looking guy though.  I honestly think if he kept his mouth shut he could have ended up on Bold or as one of Maxie's bland boyfriends on GH

I saw this in a larger video so made a clip of it as I couldn't find the promo anywhere. Looks very stylish. I guess Molly and Tanner were seen as one of their big stories or couples at the time, although from all I've read, viewers weren't engaged.

I always forget "Shayla" happened in this timeframe. Probably more interesting to analyze than watch (the show getting caught by the consequences of their supercouple focus), although I know some fans enjoyed seeing Kayla fight for her self-respect against the family.

That would sum it up for me as well. Thanks for watching.

The One Stormy Night promo from around this time has the same flair.

Re Tanner/Molly. Days made the mistake of centering the show around 2 newbies who had no ties to the history of the show.

Had Tanner been, say Spencer Olsen or Molly been Sarah Horton there would be an immediate connection to history and established characters.

    • Unrelated, sort of, but he looks absolutely nothing like Amanda Setton or Dominic Zamprogna so it's kind of hilarious they decided to make Gio their kid.  It's very clear this was not the original origin story for Gio when they cast him. He is a very handsome guy though.
    • I tend to agree, although going back to OLTL, Frank has so often cast guys who are meant to be attractive yet come across as cold and dead, I'm surprised he managed to get one who has a bit of a pulse.
    • For all I care, the boy can parade around in a g-string.  It won't make this show suck any less.
    • AMC was about a decade later so things may have changed by then, although maybe they never approached her anyway. She joined Santa Barbara in 1985, when they didn't seem interested in bringing back Hope. SB ended in late 1992, so JFP could have asked her back, but I doubt she did. For as much as JFP clearly had some use for Rick Hearst given that she hired him on GH and kept him around as often as she could, I don't think she ever used Alan-Michael well. I can't see Elvera as Delia, but she could have worked well as Faith - she had a glimpse of a strong personality alongside warmth, which only one Faith ever managed (Catherine Hicks).
    • IIRC, FC reruns aired for awhile on Lifetime, way before the network became the Women in Peril Channel, lol.
    • PAM!! YES!!! You have jogged my memory. She worked at Cedars. She's mentioned in a write-up of Tim's history in the show. It says she was a nurse, but I seem to remember she was a secretary at Cedars, working for either Ed or Sarah. (It's almost 50 years ago, so I definitely could be wrong). I'm certain she was an unwed mother. I recall reading an interview with the actress, Maureen Silliman (I looked it up, that's her correct name, LOL). She started on the show just before the Dobsons started writing it. She was shocked to get a script that said her character had been pregnant since she hit town. I remember a scene where she told Tim she was going to leave SF for a better job for her daughter's sake (really, I think she was upset he was serious about Rita). I don't remember them getting married and leaving town, but according to "Who's Who in Springfield" that's how the characters were written out. Mattson did All My Children for several years, so she might have been persuadable. Here's an interesting factoid I recently learned on these message boards: Elvera Roussel was in the running to play Delia on RH when the show first hit the air. How wild is it that Mattson played Delia for a while? (Though from what I saw of her performance, she was miscast). It's hard to know if Roussel would have been a good Delia. You'd think she would have been better suited to playing Faith Coleridge, but who knows? She didn't get to show a whole lot of range as Hope.
    • If I were to do an EON reboot, I think I would start at the beginning, with Mike Karr leaving the police force in order to begin a new career as an attorney, and dealing with his wife, Sara's, crooked family.
    • I don't know if it was the writing or performance but I felt like we finally got to see the real Ted. Especially the way he talked to Martin when confronted, felt like a completely different person. He felt darker and like a total liar who was mad he got caught. I expected him to be remorseful and want to apologize to each and every family member who he came into contact with but he seemed like he didn't care. It completely changed how I view him and it makes me wonder if this is the direction they're going to take Ted in with the recast.
