Do you think that LK being cast caused the show to shift her from business tiger to trainwreck?  I don't think SS's blake would have been threatened by Amanda, slept with Rick, or got mixed up with Ben (maybe as unholy alliance...but not the toxic thing that ended up happening).

I think LK could play cunning well, but she had more of a comedic/zany vibe that writers focused on too much down the road.

When ss played blake, she was equal Roger and Holly...cunning like her dad and a dry sarcastic wit like her mom.  LK's blake was neither Roger nor Holly..

I believe that Doug Marland did not like Hulswit at all. I read in some publication that I can't find any longer (!) that Hulswit used to criticize the writing a lot, post-Dobsons, so I wonder if that was a factor? TPTB certainly didn't go with a much "younger" actor in Peter Simon. Simon was only 3 years younger than Hulswit.

In the early 90s, GL had money, and Sherry was willing (plus they weren't paying Liz K per old info she talked about how she was in NY for weeks without starting and not getting a salary yet.) Actually I wonder if part of the reason they asked Sherry to stay longer was how well the story was going, and due to how Kim Simms left the show, they didn't want someone new to take up that much airtime.

I don't think GL understood who Blake was after they made her kid obsessed, and well that was McTavish, compounded by Zaz's illness/departure (putting it nicely) were things that made it harder. Blake due to being legacy made it harder for the writers or at least seemingly so, as there was history to draw upon. McTavish did the paranoia with Amanda (totally miscast due to age, when played in that story) and Rick as well. The whole plot was something that McTavish and her writing partner heard about before getting GL, and they thought it was a good plot, so it was stunt not character based from the start. (Especially due to Rick and Blake being "siblings" as small kids…)

The only other time I saw Marland be a little mean was what he said about Liz Hubbard at "The Doctors", but that got patched up obviously as he did write for her at "As the World Turns".

Actually, at the time, people did speak out against him, but then they let it go, and moved on. Viewers who were not around in the 1970s missed those rebuttals and replies to Lemay's attacks. The writer continued to bitch well into the 2000s, however, so that is all newer viewers saw.

After reading a plethora of interviews with Lemay over the years, as well as accounts from others who worked with him, I think Lemay did not like to be crossed, criticized, or confronted, and would become very petulant and caustic if that ever happened. I doubt he would have accepted any actor's opposite point of view. He always assumed he was in the right.

    • Another lot of skipped episodes to look forward to when the time comes on Videoland. So annoying. They have skipped so many, especially in  season 15 where they skipped 19 episodes throughout the season. Is it just me or is the vault down? It's like a different error message this time so it's hard to know if it's me this time.
    • thank you for uploading the rest of season 12!!! I hope i can get them soon the links down! Thank you again for posting the B&B classic episodes to revisit!!!!
    • Hmm, okay.  BTW, my only problem with Kai & the surgery story is where is this guy's family? And, another BTW, I think I may have inadvertently added to that rumor from last year about a male descendant of Justus Ward. You see, that is an idea I could really get behind! Like I would pay to see those scenes. And, true, I did hear it ... [sheepish grin]

Yes they can. While rare, its not like soaps in the past havent said F that and used flashbacks of a scene even when a recast has been done. OLTL used to do that
    • Well, I am glad to know that & for it to make sense, so thanks for the info &  the perspective, also. At the end of AMC 1.0, I thought the new young talent was really quite good, but I missed Eden & NuBianca just ... well, I wasn't 100% sold on her & Bianca was so important to me. But then, Tad & Dixie were also important & yep, there's another problem, for me I mean. I'm not your typical AMC fan but I hung in there anyway. I know what you mean because it wasn't as good as it once had been but it was still Agnes's show in Pine Valley. Some of that is a bittersweet nostalgic clinging to the past, I guess. By that time I'd been through so many show cancellations. AW, Santa Barbara, PC, The City, GL, ATWT.

Betsy Snyder, when she was at DAYS was part of the WGA winning writing team before she died, tragically far too young.
    • Yep Edmund and Tad went under cover to infiltrate the... Willow Lake (I think?) old folks community scandal that was exploiting Phoebe, etc.  (Which at one point led to Edmund rescuing Brooke from quicksand--common around Pine Valley I guess

) EDIT maybe I'm wrong.  I found the quicksand scene

But for the story all I can find is Edmund going undercover as the gigolo "preying" on older women, Eduardo (no one would recognize him with that disguise and name ) so the drag must have been.. a different story?
    • But then he HATES the original Heather Webber (Cher's half sister played her, right?) and we know what happened when Robin would step into the role a year after this.  He does seem pretty spot on about actors who show promise otherwise.  It's interesting he knocks OLTL early on (though I loved all the recently released episodes from this era we got) but does give a lot of credit to the actress playing Cathy despite earlier complaining about her story.  And over all, while quite negative, his various pros and cons on the shows sounds about right with what I know of the shows at this time. This was a July dated issue of the magazine but and I know they date mags a month or two in advance--obviously when he wrote this he didn't know Lovers and Friends was gonna go off the air (in May I think).
    • You know one of the soap outlets posed that question just last week: Who do you want Trina with Spencer or Kai? And, of course, the picture of Spencer was NAC. I said, well, a lot. I chose Kai. I said that Spencer had been an entitled brat & that some people valued him over her, when I valued her above all others. I guess we'll see.
    • You're right. The only thing I can think of is if GH finally decides to bring back Spencer.
