AMC: Farewell To Palmer?

Instead of killing Palmer off, I wish they could have James make, if he's available, a few final appearances to say Palmer is moving away to be with Nina, or is going to Europe on business. They could have a goodbye episode for him, and one that would not have to be focused on death.

What's the point now? He could just remain with the show since it's moving to LA.

Even though James Mitchell is almost 90, he could still make occasional appearances on AMC until he cant any longer. Especially since AMC is now moving to LA.

I suspect the fact he moved to wherever implies he is no longer able to live alone and make apps. I think it would be morbid to kill Palmer now, but you could see from his declining state the last few years he was approaching the point where he would have to stop.

I was under the impression that he's stopped making appearances specifically because he has reached the point where he can't any longer. Everything I've seen says to me that this is his choice. Can't we just let the man retire and enjoy his golden years? Have we gotten to the point where we won't be happy until the actors we love literally drop dead on set?

I agree. The last time I saw him on the show it was beyond evident that he wasn't up to the rigors of regular appearances anyway. I will certainly miss him, but seeing him that last time... it's all I need. If he's up for an anniversary show or any other special episode, that's wonderful. I of course respect his wish to retire, though I hope the show will be kind enough to at least extend the invitation.

I think part of the problem is that the show hasn't done a great job of repopulating the cast with legacy characters. So when one of our old favorites can no longer take part, we long for them and become nostalgic.

For example, Aidan Devane has been on the show nearly 10 years. No way is he a legacy character. And that's a long time to be on a show and not make an impact.

Well if the writer's and TIIC really cared about this history and core of AMC, they would have Palmer die quietly in his sleep and then have Nina and her son Michael return to Pine Valley and then give them a story. But it's pretty clear that ABC doesn't care about it's veteran actors nor do they care about the history of AMC. ABC and Disney want AMC to be written as it's being written by Pratt. If they felt differently, Frons and his fools would have been out the door years ago.

As for Aidan, it's obvious they really never knew what to do with him. They should have tied him to a legacy character and then had him father someone's child to really tie him into Pine Valley, but again, the writer's did nothing. I don't even think they care about him. He's just that other guy who may get close to a love interest of Ryan or Zack and then they just dump him and pair that character back with Ryan or Zack.

Aidan could be an asset if he's used right. His relationship with Annie was very interesting. She has been a big mess of a character since they dumped him to put her with Adam, and make moves on the younger Chandler guys. I don't think Ryan has been an asset to any story in a long time, and Zach has been ruined.
