I don't think from what I have read that the ad revenue is based exclusively on the 18 to 49. The 18 to 49 is the most important but the other demos are looked at and figure in.

If they were only and exclusively based on the 18 to 49 then networks like ABC and NBC wouldn't care about the 18 to 34 demo which they cater too as well.

So I agree from everything I have read the 18 to 49 is the most important but ad dollars are not based only on it.

And then you also have to take into account companies who choose to cater to an older audience. It was stated at one time that Viagra looks for shows that skew to an older audience even though they admit they do have younger men who use their product.

Condom advertisers prefer channels like MTV that have a younger audience.

There are a lot of factors that go into it, but overall the 18 to 49 is the go to demo.

It depends on the daypart. In primetime, and latenight, it's all viewers 18-49. Even the CW renews shows with higher 18-49 demos, even if their 18-34 demo is lower than a show they cancel.

In the morning (Today show, GMA, etc), and for evening news, it's all viewers 25-54. For daytime, it's women 18-49, and while it used to be 2-11 for Saturday mornings, it also includes 25-54 for the Saturday news shows (and Sunday news shows, as well).

It also varies by cable network. The cable news channels look at 25-54, but networks like MTV look at 18-34, and even younger.

And truthfully, NO advertiser is "looking" for a show that has lots of older viewers.....because, frankly, they don't have to look. ALL shows on the networks have high concentrations of 50+ viewers. In fact, the median age for the networks in primetime is close to 50 (over 50 for two or three nets), which means, on avergae, more than half the viewers of all their primetime shows are 50+. The 18-49 viewers are more desirable because they aren't as easy to find.

Really? Most of the adult men are 50+?

Darn, I wish we could get those numbers.

So, what you're saying is that the current residuals percentages are UNDERESTIMATES of the older audience! CBS really, really has an advertiser problem, then. Unless they're successfully selling ads on the basis of their older audience. I have to admit, looking just at the Y&R ads, they do seem to be selling a fair inventory of "older" ads. I imagine these pay less...but I wonder.

For the most part, CBS has been skewing the older audience for the past 20 years. Remember the 90s, when they were referred to as the "geriatric network?"

Do they still post the 25-54 demos for daytime? I remember CBS always did fairly well in those for daytime. I would like to see what those are today.

I don't think advertising revenue is based exclusively on 18-49. There has been a great deal of debate whether television -- at all levels not just daytime -- puts too much emphasis on that demographic.

Mark, that is a very interesting table. The residual for Y&R is larger than the total viewership for almost every other show on daytime (Bold is the exception). If male voters are distributed in the same percentages as women across age groups, it only makes that a greater number.

You know if you look at the "key demographic", it makes up only one out of three viewers at each of the soaps. I don't know if those factors make any difference, but it is interesting. I also wonder what percentage of older viewers (60 or older) watch out of habit as much as anything else.

It would be interesting to see on average how long soap viewers had been watching their soaps and how that varied across age groups. I doubt Nielson's asks that type question. The young viewers is pretty slim.

I'm not sure if Toups still gets the over 50 rating or not. I know he used too but quit posting it. If he still gets it I know I would love to see it.

I have not seen it in about 2 years and at that time Y&R was still in the 5.s I think. I'm sure it is down now since their other demos are also lower now than they were then.

Because a picture helps me to understand numerical concepts, I graphed the table above. As Carolyn1980 yesterday noted, this is still an underestimate of older (50+) viewers, since I don't know what % of the men are also older. Thus, this really shows only the % of the audience that is older WOMEN. The actual older audience is greater than that, if 50+ men could be tabulated and included.

Has anyone noticed that a prominent story-line that is playing out on ATWT during the past week has already happened, like 3 months ago, the same thing?!? And we all know how it will end. Does anything about this soap make sense any more. An ex husband has the flu - so he HAS to move in with with his ex wife. Is this common behavior somewhere in the universe that I have never visited??? Someone comes out of a coma and instead of letting their family know they are alive and conscious they move to a communal farm near and airstrip in a small town. It is insane!!! No actually if it were insane, it might be entertaining. This is just pathetic and boring.

In the loving arms of his wife, Dr. Marlena Evans, John took his last breath at the end of the June 2 episode, after suffering devastating internal injuries during a lab explosion. The iconic character went out as he lived — a hero. Sensing the fans’ devastation on Monday, Marlena’s portrayer Deidre Hall posted this simple-but-powerful message to fans on Instagram: “I know. I know. Hardest day ever.”

    • Now coming into June...well...   I knew it was coming but I didn't like the start to the next round of Dani/Bill/Hayley. As the 3 A plots from the start of the show (The SilkPress storyline and Martin's Secret being the other two), it needed to be benched for a while to develop those characters and allow other characters and storylines to grow. 3 months in, Hayley is the weak link, Dani is still divisive, but not boring, and Bill has been making his mark with some plots faster than others. So last week seeing the story starting to loop back around to them with Hayley's potential pregnancy, I honestly had mixed feelings.   I get it. The SilkPress storyline is currently in aftermath/next turn mode, so it has to be moved into a C plot position. Moreso if we want to keep the very talented Miss Trish around. And I love how clever the writers are being with the storyline. They give us enough in the episodes and are still playing out beats to keep the appetite fed. I don't feel like anyone is being dumbed down to keep her around. And Trish is giving nuances in her alone scenes with NuTed. I shouldn't care for a clear psycho, but she be selling it. That said...I wish they had given us a little more of the Martin's Secret storyline in the last week of the month though I loved the game of cat and mouse Bill did on Martin and Smitty to keep the storyline alive and active after it had a nice build beginning of May and vanished for a week mid-May. And it appears like it's about to go back to the backburner as an A plot which of course leaves the A plot of Dani/Bill/Hayley.   I am probably in the minority as someone who is not anti-Dani here and even she annoyed the heck out of me last week. In character true, but I just felt like there was a way to get all of that across without it feeling like...as I've said before...one step forward, two steps back...and have it feel organic. I liked Hayley got a little bit of edge with her, but she still ain't no match for Dani. And it reminds to be seen if we should be going back to that well of a story yet.   Now about today's show...   And I thought Tracy was bad! lol. But YES. Sharon has been worth the wait. And so has Anita's story! Finally having TT in the limelight. This has been a nice slow burn for me and a nice B plot. And the actress is good. The wig is giving. And her holding what Anita's secret is over her head and threatening to tell Vernon....Ooooo...that is what I was waiting for.    And speaking of bad...I thought Eva vs Kat was a great rivalry. But I am loving the rivalry that is growing with 'Nancy Drew' and Silk Press Sheila! They both get good licks in and are so cunning with each other. And I definitely have liked that since the anniversary party, that it has been growing. Now that Kat has been proven right, she has not backed down. And neither has SilkPress. And we got a 'Ms. B@tch' moment, too? LOVE. Eva coming up with a trump card was delicious and so 90s Sami Brady. GOOD. And the coda with Jacob and the expert...YES. The Silk Press storyline has been the best paced on the show so I love that the aftermath of the anniversary party continues to be so...barring one flaw...well for me. Not enough Nicole's POV.   And I like the C plots on display. And by that, I mean Chelsea with Vernon. And it made me wonder what the writers have plan for her love life now that the throuple is over with. I was watching her and going awww.   And of course the mystery man around Martin. I am starting to wonder if he really even works at the country club given how he made a run for it. That would be a twist.    Speaking of Martin...good to see him in scenes with his father and mother.    I'm getting used to NuTed.    I felt the last episode of May was a bit of a letdown, but this was a very nice recovery.
    • Unless they cut him, I'd think he would stay. Surely, he didn't choose to return because he expected high quality. I figure he gets to work when he wants and spend a lot of time doing his own thing and being with his family.
    • The writing for Liz and Lucky is indeed terrible, but if JJ signed a one-year contract he may be gone in a couple of months anyway. Perhaps they’re just cutting their losses.
    • That would be his older sister Stacey. She was the center of a big story back in the day. Nola was out to snag medical student Kelly Nelson, who she thought would provide her with the life she craved. He was in love with a girl named Morgan. Nola plotted to get pregnant by him, but couldn't manage to get him in bed. So she seduced Floyd, who thought she was in love with him. When she knew she was pregnant, she got Kelly drunk and made sure he woke up next to her in bed. Kelly believed her when she told him he made her pregnant. They were about to elope to Las Vegas, but her mother ratted her out and Kelly abandoned her. She almost married Floyd, but jilted him at the altar. She went to work for Quint. When the baby came prematurely, Kelly saved both of them. She named the baby Kelly Louise to irk Morgan, who was now married to Kelly. When she fell in love with Quint, she had a change of heart over all the trouble she had caused, so she changed the baby's name to Anastasia Louise, shortened to Stacey. Quint was a devoted stepfather and Henry treated her like his own granddaughter.  After Quint and Nola leave SF, I believe Stacey is never seen again. Which is odd, you would think they would have brought her back with Nola and J, but they never did.
