Just finished reading the book, honestly this book told me a lot about James E. Reilly. @Toups would likely find this a good read. Alot of good details about Passions including how Reilly almost called it quits and Marlene McPherson and Darrel Ray Thomas almost took over, how no one realized Ben Masters had dementia until he suddenly disappeared and everyone was asking where he is. Tracey Ross loved herself some Ben Masters, the way she talks about him makes his passing hurt even more. The lack of respect the soap industry showed the show, even evident by the soap blogs not even covering this books release says a lot. Honestly, as a Passions fan i have a new found respect for the show even more reading how they pulled this off. I think the book is a good read not just for fans of the show but soap fans in general. NBC gave Jim hella power after that Days stint, overall its a good read.

Lack of respect? No disrespect here but they brought this on themselves if we are being honest. I loved that Show and the cast did the best they could with the material given to them.

But let’s be for real. The dialogue was corny as hell, the writting was hit or miss and Stories dragged on where u thought: didn’t i watched that Episode already? This show felt like a parody compared to other soaps and this is why some other people are Not Rating it or don’t Care at all. Others were just Not into the supernatural stuff.

It kinda worked for Days cause days had always been out there and was something Never really done before.

No disrespect taken at all, however I stand by what I said.

Yeah I mean Passions was definitely a cult classic & was my introduction to the soap world as a young millennial but re-watching this show as a grown adult, I realize just how much of it was hot garbage. There were good things about it but there’s a reason why most of Passions audience were so young. The S/L’s were stupid and there was hardly ever any payoff to any of them. If you compare any other soap to Passions around this time, it’s obvious JER was not giving us intelligent soap writing whatsoever. It was lazy… and I don’t have a problem with campy. It was just poorly done.

The amount of episodes that went on of Luis and Sheridan getting so close to telling Antonio the “truth” about their love, just for something super dumb to stop it is ridiculous. Or all the times Theresa would almost tell Ethan he’s little Ethan’s father but Pilar or someone else would stop it. Beyond frustrating! It actually got progressively worst over time. They probably had the best years right in the beginning because the budget was atleast there.

It's funny, YouTube took me on a nostalgia trip rediscovering things from the early 2000s that I loved recently and I realized from adult eyes the same thing. I think for Passions it's probably the nostalgia factor, those 12-17 year olds are now in their 30s/40s reliving that time. Hard to know if I'd been as into it as an adult, but as a kid for whatever reason me an my friends were obsessed haha

I just finished the book! overall it was a pretty good read...definitely more told of the POV and research of a fan which isn't a bad thing (going by JT Cornell is actually clever and hilarious!) and kind of more of a year by year recap of what happen on the show with little anecdotes thrown in. I definitely would love to hear more BTS stuff about certain stories and more of the actors words when it came to doing certain scenes and trying to make sense of the some of the more out there stories. It was good to learn a bit more about JER though. For as crazy as his storytelling was, it seemed everyone in the industry respected his ideas he bestowed upon daytime.

That was crazy to find out how affected Rodney Van Johnson really was at playing the "angry black man" and how he got PO'd at Chris Maleki's Spike for throwing fake punches at him ( I don't recall them fighting on the show though) That's scary he had to really wind down after filming to get all the anger out.
All the love for Ben Masters and the cast not knowing what was really going on with him before his death made me tear up a bit. I didn't realize how much he was involved in Tracy Ross's kids life too!

They even have quite a few paragraphs devoted to the the music having to be replaced on the SCI Fi and Superchannel rebroadcasts which is of course what I always complain about too! LOL That's why I always want to see the original broadcast 1999-2001 episodes pop up more where the music isn't messed with.
