Y&R: Week of May 11, 2009

Y&R should've pulled a Passions. When it was revealed that Alistair was Charlie, the day-ahead Canadain viewers didn't get to see the ending. Instead we saw the revelation at the beginning of the next episode.

Why? It was already out.

On a show like DOOl, or GH maybe. I am one of those stubborn viewers who want that nowhere near Y&R, they will have to come up with better

Like I said...it was a flight of fancy. There are going to need to be logical pretzel twists -- under any circumstance -- to make this work. So, some sleight of hand -- some "device" -- is going to need to be used.

Don't worry, all of Mark's theories tend to be "out there." :)

I'm trying not to take this personally, Alvin. :-( We may be opposites, but I respect what you have to say.

I can't believe they've kept this quiet since March, again, I have to give them credit for that.

This should become the norm. I'm telling you, it would build the show. "Watch for a huge game-changing event on 5/15". And that should be end of it. Or maybe, 'This event will challenge beliefs that viewers have held for over 20 years.' But go no further...

...but it's also a complete rewrite. The man was gaga over The Bug. Trust me, I was just a kid, but I remember every excruciating detail of that romance. Now I'm having flashbacks of that god awful lady in red dance scene. *gag me*. (rant over)

I do not agree that it is a complete rewrite. Just YESTERDAY I watched the scene (on YT) where Phillip and Cricket went out for a dance date, and Phillip kept sucking back alcohol-laced cola...ostensibly to give him courage and extraversion for the date. It would not be AT ALL unusual (trust me!) for this to be a COVER for the fact that he needed to 'disinhibit' even to play this role of a guy on a straight date. Listen, those late teens/early 20s are confusing. It is ABSOLUTELY POSSIBLE, especially in the late 80s/early 90s, that P3 had very little idea that he was gay! I'm referring, of course, to constant internalized denial--and drinking is a GREAT way to blur the truth and not face it. It is real, honestly. That said, I agree with you totall. P3 need not be gay just because TB is.

Quick piggyback to my theory -

what if after Phillip had the baby and was married to Nina, he realized he was gay and that's why he orchestrated his death.

I think we've found our new Y&R headwriter, folks!

You can't be serious! I found the idea ! Sorry, Cashton!

The character has a baby, suddenly realises he is gay and because of that orchestrates his own death!

Hysterical!

YES! It wouldn't have been "cheating" or "misleading" to do what you've described. It's just a way to ensure everyone finds out the surprise around the same time!

It's not entirely out of the realm of possibilities, Sylph.

Husbands and fathers discover practically all the time that they are "living a lie", so they look for a way out of their situation. Plus, this

is a soap opera, so faking one's death just raises the dramatic stakes.

But TG is not out.

If TG is not out, then I'm not Black.

TG might be out, but he doesn't broadcast it. Just as heterosexuals don't exactly broadcast that they're straight.

Just go back to Youtube and watch the scene where P3 takes Cricket on a date. He has to GET DRUNK to get through it. At the time it was written as his "insecurity"...but it could easily be something else. The ONLY WOMAN he ever slept with was Nina. The first act of sex was drunken, and that is how Nina got pregnant. Sure, after he married her, he slept with her some more. But he also plunged into alcoholism and drove to his death. That is TOTALLY consistent with a 'denied' and even 'self denied' gay identity. Guys do it ALL THE TIME. Even in 2009.

If TG is not out, then I'm not Black.

I read one interview where he SPECIFICALLY referenced a female companion in Amsterdam. I think he even named her. I wish I had kept that. It would have been years ago in SOD or SOW. That said, I agree he *pings*.

I'm not saying it's impossible. But, it feels contrived and inorganic. I wouldn't like it, but I am glad for the people who would.

A note to brimike: I hope we haven't scared you away from this thread!!!

The narcissist in me is compelled to say that I posted a version of this on May 13 at 7:35 am :).

And I disagree that it would take a huge twist for

P3 to be gay. He had to drink to be with a woman. He only slept with one woman, whom he stayed with because she was pregnant. While married to her, he drank himself to death.

TOTALLY organic. TOTALLY.

That said, I agree with others that there is no reason for

P3 to be gay, just because TB is.

Contrived and inorganic more refers to the part

faking his own death because he found his sexual orientation

I totally agree here. I'm EAGER to see how they deal with this pretzel twist...and still seem like not-DOOL.

Exactly. This might be a soap opera, but to fake his death for something like that....

Who is TG?

These kind of stories really bug me on Y&R... I should be happy about this whole history honouring, yet it all feels so flat, manipulative, even easy... I really, really feel completely manipulated, they haven't given me any single norma, new, fresh, never-before-seen successful story; all of Y&R's recent successes were partly because fans were happy they remembered something from a distant past.

And now that they've seen some fans are salivating all over it, they just thump out more and more and more of these stories.

Also, frankly, too much of its efforts are about correcting certain things from the past. Perhaps Alden was right: focus on new horizons.
