Probably poated before...but scenes of Alice from when steven goes to prison to when she goes away for help.  I thought Courtney portrayed the slow descent into a breakdown well...and i liked seeing Susan Sullivan back when she was more subtle before Dharma and Greg era.

Im thinking harding wanted Alice to be weak willed...and Courtney wad too strong of actor to truly be weak.  While Harney was decent, she didnt have the charisma of Courtney...anf played up the more passive parts of Alice...imho

Lemay talks in his book about two problematic actors (leading men) who would eventually need to be replaced (this was after Reinholt was fired) - one for showing up drunk or angry at his fellow actors, the other one not bothering to learn his lines. Lemay doesn't specifically mention these problematic actors by name, but I always assumed the first actor was John Fitzpatrick, and the second was Nicolas Coster.

Include me in the group that was disappointed at there being no Steve Alice scene in 1989.  if it had only been Rachel he appeared to, okay, you could argue that she was delirious.  But once Jaime is involved as well then you lose that argument.  There HAS to be a Steve Alice scene.

I also thought that the 2 actors were Coster and Fitzpatrick.  It's funny how Lemay has no problem mentioning names so many times, but wouldn't here.  He also mentions a friendship with Coster that seems to heve become strained at some point.

Of all the replacement Alices, Harney was probably the least bad (to damn her with faint praise, LOL), but she lacked the spark, charisma, and emotion that Courtney had; all the elements which made the audience care for her so much.

Lemay lambasted Courtney for her "incoherent sobbing" during emotional scenes, and accused her of overacting during the character's nervous breakdown (he wanted her to show "mute grief," if I recall correctly), yet I daresay none of the later actresses who played the role could ever had done such a fine job as Alice during this period. I was surprised that Courtney was not nominated for an Emmy during the 1973-4 season.

I completely agree. There should have been a scene with Reinholt and Courtney to at least give them that final "goodbye" that they never had during their original run. It would have capped off an impressive week of cameos and Bay City history, in general. Although, on the other hand, it could have made fans demand that they bring the two of them back, myself included. I guess TPTB were just concerned with having Steve interact with current cast members?

Also, I wonder if Coster and Lemay eventually reconciled? Lemay's book was published in 1981(and probably finished the year prior?). I remember reading interviews in the 1990's (or possibly the 2000's) with each of them, and they were complimentary of each other, if asked.

I would hold to them if I were you. Not all the material has been uploaded to youtube, and among the bits that have, some remain and others have disappeared. In years past, I've gotten rid of videos from my personal collection, figuring I could just watch them on youtube...only to discover later on, that they had disappeared completely from the internet.

And of course, as soon as certain eps are not available anywhere, you really, really, really want to watch ithem again!

I never said Costner was replaced, but he was let go from the show. Not having your contract renewed is a form of dismissal. In 1983, ABC declined to renew Jacquie Courtney's contract on OLTL, despite her enormous popularity and importance to the program, which iwas a similar situation.

    • He needs to divorce her arse with her constant cheating.   She's no better than Doug... she's F*cking pathetic.
    • I didn't know of any interruptions for Maeve Kinkead after her 1997 return. Her runs would then be 1981-1987, 1989-1996, 1997-2000, short arcs until the end. I knew Maureen Garrett second run was interrupted from a 2009 interview but I couldn't recall the exact year. Her runs would then be 1976-1980, 1988-2000, short arcs until the end.
    • As I said in May, I have no problem with Martin and Bradley being married. You can still do all the fun introloper storylines with them as you do everyone else. Both men of a certain age, and it is very believable for them to have either a first love or have been previously married. And, you can do it without either of them cheating!

I said something similar during the premiere week. Bill was the perfect age to play Martin as Vernon and Anita's child. I would've much preferred this version, but oh well.
    • I don't know how you want to count Maeve. She "retired" in '00, but would come back for appearances. I don't know however if she made an appearance in '01 or '03. In '02 I believe she came back for Josh and Reva's wedding. I assume she came back when Gina Tognoni took over the role of Dinah. And I know she was back for Ross' memorial service. Maureen Garrett was around until at least '00. I don't think Holly was in town when Ben returned though. I just got pissed off about Jerry all over again.
    • So, pretty sure Zaslow, Garrett, Kinkead, and Newman all chose to leave the first time. (If that's wrong, please correct me). Bernau - not sure why he left the first time. Was it voluntary? Or did they decide to write him out? They were writing so many out during that time period. It always seemed odd to me that they introduced Alex, FINALLY giving him someone he could talk to, and then he was written out. Or maybe that's why they made Alex his sister, so she could take his place as the head of the Spaulding family? Would love more intel on that if anyone knows. Simon - was he replaced by RVV? Or did he voluntarily leave the first time? It seems to me like one of those times TPTB decided to sex up or glamorize a character (and it clearly flopped). If he was fired, interesting he came back. Again, would love if someone could spill the tea. Clarke - I've always assumed he left because of his personal issues, but not sure if that was the case the first time.
    • So Doug just leaves Vanessa there with Joey? He's a f*cking loser. Vanessa needs to divorce his arse
    • Tina Sloan tied Jerry VerDorn record when Guiding Light was cancelled - 26 years uninterrupted
    • Very true...but TPTB all were desperate to get into prime time or films and couldn't, so they looked down on their own industry and tried to infuse themes that just didn't work in soaps. I would have thought after 9/11 the shows would have gone out of their way to provide that warmth and comfort that the audience wanted, and to bring old viewers back. Budget cuts? Just bring back kitchen sets, both ATWT and GL got rid of those besides one each..(the Snyders and the Bauers) You don't need super fancy sets if you have the writing.
    • LMAO they didn't
