This was Corinne Jacker's era.

Just seeing this snippet points to why viewers were not tuning in.

Apart from Cecile, everybody else was  a newbie.

Had there been an effort to incorporate more established characters into all of this, maybe things would have been different.

They dropped so many Frames and Matthews in these years and the new families had no staying power.

It was a lesson all soaps failed to learn from.

Howard R was looking hot here.

Petronia Paley managed to hang on another 5 years despite writing/producer overhauls.Such a classy/elegant presence.Quinn should have formed the basis of a new core family by having her marry, maybe step children  as well as bringing back Thom, now a divorced single mom,but instead they killed her off.

SOD probably printed incorrect information.  Both Ted Bancroft (Luke Rielly)  and David Thatcher (Lewis Arlt) appeared in September 1983.  Jennifer Thatcher (Sofia Landon Geier) also showed up in September 1983, but she would later die in a car accident around Thanksgiving of 1983.

Interesting series of youtube videos, showcasing the various actresses who played Alice Matthews Frame on AW.

Really, there's no competition. Jacqueline Courtney was the definite Alice. Some of the other "actresses" were horrid.

Wesley Pfenning was the worst, IMHO, and a painful, baffling choice for the role, but at least she did not last as long as Linda Borgenson, who was lethargic and colorless, and who had no chemistry with anyone.

And no, I have not seen that youtube channel, but I shall check it out. Thank you for the heads up!

The last scene between Alice and Rachel in the 1984-85 video clip was when Rachel was shot after being held hostage by Carl Hutchins.  Within a month after the scene in the hospital room, Jacqueline Courtney would be written off the show.  The show missed a big opportunity to move JC's Alice front and center.   Rachel would have amnesia from March well into the summer months.  During the story, Rachel leaves Mac and moves out of the mansion.   Just think of what could have been if Mac rekindled his romance with Alice while he was separated Rachel.   In the hospital scene, they even talk about having the same taste in men.   Alice, not Rachel, would have had the upper hand while Rachel was suffering from amnesia.  TPTB really missed a great opportunity to use the show's history to generate story for Alice, Mac, and Rachel.

Harry Bellaver (Ernie Downs) having a few line troubles there ... funny I can recognize both his and Connie Ford's voices, but Robin Strasser's -- I assume that's Rachel they're talking to -- is unrecognizable. There's an Audra Lindley (Aunt LIz) audio clip floating around in which the voice is similarly sped up, which is too bad, because it undercuts how malevolent Lindley's Liz was (as opposed to Irene Dailey's more ineffectual Aunt Liz).

Does anyone know if AW ever tired to get Robin Strasser to return to the show after 1972?  After this point Victoria Wyndham owned the role of Rachel, but I'd be curious to know if they ever tried to get Robin back.

Also, did AW ever try to get Beverlee McKinsey back in the role of Iris around the time she started playing Alexandra on GL in 1984?

    • Hopefully they can expand some of the sets again. I watched some 04/05 episodes and forgot how much more grand the production used to feel. I wonder if YR will be staying put or going there or somewhere else as well.
    • DAYS posted the recipe! https://www.instagram.com/p/DKiMVZvuZje/ dayspeacock June 5, 2025 Tomorrow is National Donut Day! Here’s Alice Horton’s famous recipe! #NationalDonutDay #Donuts #Recipe #DOOL #Days #Daysofourlives #TBT Ingredients: 2 eggs 1 cup of sugar 1 cup of milk 5 tablespoons melted shortening 1-teaspoon vanilla extract 4 cups all-purpose flour, sifted before measuring 4 teaspoons baking powder ½ teaspoon salt 1 stick butter, melted Cinnamon Sugar In a large bowl, beat the eggs until foamy. Gradually add sugar, beating constantly. Stir in milk, shortening and vanilla. Sift together flour, baking powder and salt. Add to the wet ingredients, mixing well. Cover and chill the dough for 30 minutes to one hour for easier handling. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees. Spray baking sheet with vegetable cooking spray. Roll out or pat the dough on a lightly floured board to a half inch thickness. Cut with a doughnut cutter. Place the doughnuts and holes on the baking sheet, one inch apart. Bake for 10 – 15 minutes or until golden brown. Brush each doughnut and doughnut holes with melted butter and roll in Cinnamon Sugar to coat all sides. Makes about 36 doughnuts. Cinnamon Sugar: 1 cup of sugar 1 teaspoon of cinnamon In a small bowl, combine the sugar and cinnamon, blending well.
    • "Jordan and Robert have the best brother chemistry. " They certainly did!  And that chemistry worked no matter who served as the protagonist in a given scene or story.  A shame that a full-blown story was never developed for those two.  Wouldn't have needed to be adversarial, either.  Maybe a serious, unexpected, long-term outside threat, business or personal, to one of the brothers with the other coming to his aid.

I was able to find most of them. I am not sure if you did 1974-1977 but I did not find it in the 70s thread. This is an amazing resource for EVERY soap.  1973 https://boards.soapoperanetwork.com/topic/41800-ratings-from-the-70s/page/78/#comments 1973 more research https://boards.soapoperanetwork.com/topic/41800-ratings-from-the-70s/page/80/#comments 1973 Update https://boards.soapoperanetwork.com/topic/41800-ratings-from-the-70s/page/82/#comments 1978 https://boards.soapoperanetwork.com/topic/50145-ratings-from-the-80s/page/135/#comments 1979-1988 https://boards.soapoperanetwork.com/topic/50145-ratings-from-the-80s/page/115/#comments 1989  https://boards.soapoperanetwork.com/topic/50145-ratings-from-the-80s/page/122/#comment-1876530 1990-1999  https://boards.soapoperanetwork.com/topic/58300-ratings-from-the-90s/page/11/#comments 2000-2004  https://boards.soapoperanetwork.com/topic/58300-ratings-from-the-90s/page/58/#comments
    • Mrs. H used the donuts to distract from the expensive jewels that she hid in the walls of her kitchen.  Now, it all makes sense...

I thought a smart cookie like Caroline Brady would've had the chance to hide a bauble of her own from her dalliance with Victor.
