With the bias against Wall-E being an animated film and all, The Dark Knight should have no problem securing a spot for Best Picture at the Oscars, but that's not a sure thing of course. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences skews older, and The Dark Knight might not be the cup of tea of a lot of older voters. However, it's enormous box office success could be more than enough to push it into the race, though, I seriously doubt The Dark Knight could walk away with the Best Picture prize at the end of award season.

Saw Doubt tonight and my god what amazing acting from Streep, Hoffman, the whole cast. Oh and Viola Davis should win the oscar for Best Supporting Actress.... and she only had like 5 minutes of screentime! Her presence was just amazing and her scenes I did not see coming from a mile away. The plot moved a bit wonky at times, but overall great film. 7.5/10!

I found Doubt to be a mixed bag, and Streep's performance to not be very effective. I know that's probably sacrilege, since it is Meryl Streep, but I found her completely underwhelming in this film. I can't even say that it starts with Doubt though, Streep has been throwing in all sorts of unnecessary ticks and actions that grate my nerves and take away from her performances in recent years, IMO. Hoffman was another one who I found merely average in Doubt. This film suffers from lousy execution, which is a shame, since the original play was created by John Patrick Shanley and he directed this film. I didn't find that Shanley had a clear idea of what he really wanted out of this film, because of that, I don't think some of the principal actors knew how to project their performances more efficiently. There's also some problems I had with the screenplay. I give it a 4.5/10.

I totally agree, Viola David, in her brief screen-time, steals this film. She deserves every accolade she gets.

That's an interesting analysis, and I have seen others comment on the exact same things. Earlier in the year many thought Streep was for sure going to win her third Oscar, but since it was not as commanding of a performence in many people's eyes she will just get a nomination. I have not seen Revolutionary Road or Rachel Getting Married yet, but from all I have hard either Hathaway or Winslet should win....

I am such a fan boy of Streep though and have rarely saw a film of her's that I did not enjoy her performence in.... :D

    • Today (Thurs May 15) eppy not on paramount *menu* but it's on cbs.com. If you take the cbs episode URL and substituted paramountplus for cbs in the same URL, you get the episode on pplus https://www.cbs.com/shows/video/Huj7bAYV8H6T038u9cXam3bk6QXNkM2Y/ https://www.paramountplus.com/shows/video/Huj7bAYV8H6T038u9cXam3bk6QXNkM2Y/
    • Really good episode today. Even the characters who usually annoy me, like Chase and Brook Lynn, got some sweet scenes. I also appreciate that they're finally giving Lucky more to do, letting him in on Ric & Ava's blackmail scheme. And those Liz and Lucas scenes were fantastic;  Van Hansis has been bringing such playfulness to the role of Lucas, he brings out the best in scene partners like Laura Wright and Becky Herbst. It was also nice to get Liz's perspective on why her romantic rapprochment with Lucky is moving so slow; it makes perfect sense that she thinks he's not really capable of settling down, even if he wants to be with her.
    • I thought Keith did great as well. His scene with Colby was what sold me. He displayed the emotions that a man who knows he's made a mistake and wants to rectify should have. Its funny how Maurice has been given passes in his acting that other actors have not. What Keith has shown me is that he can atleast keep up with the ladies in his story instead of them acting circles around him when Maurice was playing the role.
    • Also Murder, She Wrote season 3 finale was the week before.
    • When Kat was in Ted's hotel room and he wasn't there, she started to write a note to leave for him, and then thought Why? and texted him instead.  Love that.

    • Thank you. And above all, it's conflict, which is what soap opera is. Not characters just being annoying because a writer rushes through story for them.

    • Maybe Carney and Levin didn't get along, but he got along with Tolan. Who knows. I SO agree about Tolan. I am sure my jaw hit the floor when I watched her first scene. She had been hyped like crazy by the soap mags. They swore she was going to be a sensation like Mulgrew. I thought she had a speech impediment. More likely she just couldn't remember her lines so she ended up slurring them from nervousness. Not everyone can do soap acting, it's very difficult. There's memorizing so many lines, then there's so little rehearsal. I think she was a theater actor. Maybe she was a good one. But when the camera was fixed on her, she just...sucked. I had nothing particular against Nicolette Goulet. She just wasn't Mary. She had no chemistry with Levin. She didn't even look like she belonged in that family (a similar situation when they replaced Sarah Felder with that blond chick who was laughable as a rookie cop). I don't believe it was impossible to recast the role. Kathleen Turner was doing soaps during this era. She would have been a phenomenal Mary. (Not to say that she would have been available, but just to point out there were good actors of that type around).
