I was horrified reading and posting the few quotes that I posted from the Hegselth/Tr*mp military meeting of Sept. 30.

Only posted because, just sayin, anyone who thinks "they can't do that" -- they ARE doing it despite it being illegal.

But after posting it, I had to go for a walk outside afterwards to calm down.

I advise anyone to limit exposure to the news to just enough to be aware, but not so much that it defeats us.
(I realize that's almost impossible!  But it's what I try to do, although I'm not good at it.)

Hundreds of armed federal agents from ICE and police raided an entire Chicago apartment building, including. Just everyone, including children, and U.S. citizens.
An  agent was overheard saying "F*ck them kids".

I'm an older person, and my parents were older when I was born. My dad served in World War II -- his older brother served in World War I. My dad served because he didn't want the n@zis to win.He used to talk about surviving the McCarthy era.We had friends from all over the world in many cultures/races/religions in our home because we believed the USA should be about love. My dad was a high ranking military officer who said wanted the military to uplift people, not oppress them. I have to hold onto his memory of surviving two world wars and the McCarthy era, and keeping his sense of humor and continuing to help people all his life.

Just found this new essay (Oct. 3, 2025) about what happened in the past

Lessons from a Red Scare: The American people are capable of turning the tide against repression.

I just want to express how much I appreciate your posting these updates, @janea4old, and hope you are doing what you need to in the name of self-care.

This is just... disturbing. More people should see this.

I just watched this.  It's a collection of videos of Charlie Kirk quotes through the years.
He is so full of hatred, racism, violence, and misogyny.
I thought it was interesting & scary how the commenter at the start and end of the video pointed out that this is the current mainstream Republican view.

Yeah. More people need to be aware of this.  (if you can stomach it)

Thankfully Pope Leo is not like Cardinal Dolan!

Sept. 30, 2025 - Pope Leo press conference at his summer residence in Italy.
A reporter asked what Pope Leo thought about Cardinal Blase Cupich, Archbishop of Chicago -- because Cardinal Cupich wants to award a prize to Illinois Democratic Senator Dick Durbin -- and Durbin happens to support legalized abortion.

The Pope replied that he didn't know the specific details of that proposed award, but he could reply in generalized fashion as follows -- (I am paraphrasing)
-- it's important to consider the lifetime of a person and to consider the whole person and what they have contributed to the good overall.  And not to oversimpify ethical issues but instead to have deeper understanding.
Durban has been in politics for over 40 years if you combine his terms as a representative and as a senator.

Here is the video and actual quotes:

https://www.reuters.com/world/pope-leo-criticizes-inhuman-treatment-immigrants-us-2025-09-30/

Quoting Pope Leo:
As I myself have spoken in the past, it is important to look at *many* issues that are related to what is the teaching of the Church.
Someone who says “I am against abortion but says I’m in favor of the death penalty” is not really pro-life.
So someone who says “I am against abortion but I’m in agreement with the inhuman treatment of immigrants in the United States, I don’t know if that’s pro-life.”
End quote.

Thank you @DRW50! It's unsettling how a character's words from a film made over 70 years ago... can resonate with us... and make us shiver.

That's the reality of our current times.

the Jane Goodall Institute
October 6, 2025

Dr. Jane Goodall spent her final weeks doing what she loved most — advocating for the planet, connecting with people from all walks of life, and embodying her message of hope. 💚

She shared her vision for a better future through sold-out lectures in Ottawa, Toronto, Detroit, and Austin; called for urgent climate action at Climate Week in New York City; met with supporters and partners in Mexico City and Los Angeles; and inspired young changemakers at a special Roots & Shoots event in Chicago.

Jane often said that the power of young people was her greatest reason for hope — and the morning after she passed peacefully in her sleep, she was scheduled to speak at a Roots & Shoots school event in Pasadena.

Her passion for our world never wavered. She reminded us that hope is not passive — it is action. As we carry her mission forward, we remember her words: “Every individual matters. Every individual has a role to play. Every individual makes a difference.” 🌿

Machado wins for 'tireless work promoting democratic rights'

In a post on X, the committee says it has awarded Maria Corina Machado the Nobel Peace Prize "for her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy".
