Any Capitol Fans Here?

I was reading a Digest article from around 1989, where they talked about crime stories, and Henry Slesar said a moment he really loved, during his tenure as Capitol headwriter, was bringing back Clarissa's dead husband or whoever, because that was a story about older people. Did you like that story?

That story, particularly their emotional reunion, was listed in some soap magazine's greatest moments list, I've only seen bits of that s/l. Yeah, Baxter (Ron Harper) was in town for months before they knew who he was and Clarissa fell for him over Mark. I think that contributed to Mark losing it/the reveal of him being a secret spy villain, or whatever. Actually, he may have even been involved with Baxter aka Garrett in the undercover spy world or something.

In the end who did Clarissa stay with?

I had also wanted to ask if you were interested in any of the Capitol preview type of stuff (text not photos) that they had in some of the Digests. I have a few from 1985 and 1986.

Sure!

She stuck with Baxter. Mark was killed in a shoot out at Lincoln Memorial (real tasteful). I'm almost positive James Lipton was responsible for that, and from what I gather, it was a VERY unpopular story development (making a charming, upstanding guy like Mark a trader/spy).

I prefer Mark, he's a cool witty guy before they make him a traitor. Jarrett/Baxter is more of a vanilla good guy. I'd like to see more episodes involving his reveal, like his first scene with Myrna for example. Him leaving Myrna for Clarissa was the end of the ladies' since childhood friendship and the beginning of a bunch of mess.

Here's a clip (in English!), oh, and that so is not the Lincoln Memorial, remembered it wrong:

SFK was there ever anything on the show about Trey being in love with Clarissa? I was looking in a Digest from around late 82 or mid 83 and they said that the original writers were going and that many of their stories might be changed, and one new story being suggested was Trey having feelings for Clarissa.

Wow, yeah, I've never seen or heard anything about Trey and Clarissa, now THAT would have been interesting. Would have drove Myrna crazy and created a lot of drama for Trey's career (older woman) and mixed emotions for Clarissa given the two families' history. In the pilot movie, Trey's limo almost mows Clarissa down while she's out jogging and Trey makes some smart remark about one less McCandless.

I agree, that would have been a really interesting storyline. How old was Trey supposed to have been? Early 30s? It would have been about a 20-year age gap which would have made for a field day for the Washington gossip hounds. I imagine it would have caused some drama between her and her sons, especially Tyler.

Yeah, I guess that's where Conboy first worked with Constance.

Yes, Trey was early thirties and Clarissa was latest forties/early fifties. Tyler and the other boys would have had a fit had she started dating Trey and Myrna would have flipped her wig (literally).

I just re-discovered this board since I've been looking at my Capitol tapes again. I love Capitol and wish I could have seen the whole show. I was just a kid when the show originally aired and discovered it after I started watching Constance on General Hospital. I liked her so much on GH that I looked up some of her other work and, through the generosity of fellow Capitol fans, I've gotten copies of a good many episodes, especially from the later part of the show's run (1985-1987). My favorite character, of course, was Clarissa and I preferred the McCandlesses to the Cleggs. I wonder if the series in its entirety still exists on tape somewhere and if it will ever be released on DVD. After seeing what I have of Capitol, I think I prefer Constance as Clarissa rather than Helena. For one, Clarissa was a much larger role. Helena, as entertaining as she can be, is such a peripheral character on GH, where Clarissa played a central role on Capitol. The roles are pretty much polar opposites of one another.

I wish I could see Constance on Love is a Many Splendored Thing as well.

Myrna would have gone apoplectic! LOL Paula wouldn't have minded, however;)

    • -- I agree that the vibes are there, but I can also make the case that it's a pale imitation. That Neil Winters Lounge is already a pretty classy place, but the decor make it look tackier. Those Happy Birthday signs are tragic in design and color. The tablecloths look like they've been chosen by Helen Keller. Where is Claire? We hear stupid reasons for her lateness, but we all know it's because this show is too cheap to pay for too many actors in any one episode. It makes NO sense that Victoria has that toast to Nikki without Claire's presence. And where is Cole? Off coughing somewhere? -- The rest of the show was watching people open their black invitations from Alexander Dumas -- for a party on June 13...TWO WEEKS AWAY. So we got through the entire sweeps and still no Dumas? The big sweeps reveal is a party in France in 2 weeks??? Why anyone thinks this is good soap is beyond me.
    • Chandler Massey smirked in EVERY scene in which he appeared. He's not a good actor. He cannot get into character, ever, and plays every scene like he's Chandler running into an old friend on the street. I hate it because actors should take their work seriously and respect it and everyone around them.   It's all so real, to the point where there's no sense trying to separate Drake from his character. I snarked a lot over the years about Drake Hogestyn's acting -- very arch, lots of tics, over-the-top at times -- but I also think he was a great soap star. There was so much humanity in everything he did, and he was always a comforting and stabilizing force on screen. Flashbacks on soaps are almost always special and fun, but does anyone come across as more loving and filled with humanity than John? I don't think so. DAYS has suffered a lot of loss in the past few years. For me, this one hits the hardest.
    • “I’m not a lifelong soap fan, but I sure am now,” Wolf tells PEOPLE about creating the documentary Soaps, which includes deep dives into the biggest and most successful soap operas in the industry, with a strong focus on The Bold and the Beautiful. “It reflects, in a broader way, the cultural significance of soap operas and the incredible task involved in bringing these stories to the screen every day.”
    • I have this for the 4th act on 11/9/88, which per my files, is the first time John and Stefano are in a scene together: Limo (Roman, Diana, Stefano, Milo) Then their second time together is 11/17/88 in the second-to-last act: ON LOCATION: Beach & Cliff (Diana, Roman, Stefano) I'd have to check the 2016 logs, so I don't know who shares scenes as easily in this year, but these are the last 4 episodes that John and Stefano were both in together: 1/8/16, 1/11/16, 3/1/16, 3/2/16.
    • I'm going to respond to you about this show. I've been accused of hating on it for some reason or another. But as a 53-year-old black man I do not hate this show at all. It heavily represents people like me, but I want it to be treated well and not just pushed with half-assedness, which is what I feel has happened on several occasions so far. Bad editing, bad cliffhangers, or no cliffhangers at all, disappearing characters with dropped storylines, etc. I can understand shows no longer wanting certain characters or  storylines, but why the "Judy Winslow" effect? I'm really finding it weird that Jacob doesn't mention his father or his detective partner. Jacob was smack dab in the middle of them both.
    • I love many things about BTG very much. For me, it's greatest strength is how the family relationships are so beautifully written. The deep love between family members while acknowledging each other's flaws--it's SO GOOD.  The best of the best is the two sister relationships: loving but very different sisters Dani and Nicole and adversarial sisters Kat and Eva. These two relationships can anchor the show for many years to come, in my opinion. (The one caveat is that the young and very talented Colby and Ambyr may want to leave the show sooner rather than later, but that's to be expected). My biggest problem with this show is this: Where are the romantic love stories? Where are the star-crossed lovers? Almost every character on this show is married, or in a committed relationship, or just fooling around. Right now the only potential for this are in the Ashley/Andre/Derek and Kat/Tomas/Eva situations. Like a lot of people, I feel the sooner they ditch Ashley and Derek, the better. I hate picking on actors, but the characters are so blah and bland it's like they're a parody of soap characters. I like Andre, and there's some indication they might have him become more serious about Dani, but I don't see that becoming a big love story. I could be wrong. Kat and Eva fighting over a man would be amazing. Over Tomas? No.  I've noticed on social media some people are starting to ship Kat and Jacob. I think that shows how much viewers long for a messy love story. There is much I enjoy about BTG and I have no intention of bailing on it. But over all my many years of watching soap operas, the thing that always got me the most excited about them was the question: "When are those two finally going to get together?"

Some initial thoughts.   1) a Who's who back in the day with an assortment of well known performers. 2) Surprised Debra Messing would agree to play a conservative character 3) Not surprised a network didn't pick this up because showing a conservative that is human/likable is a no no in Hollywood LOL
    • Yes from when they went on Let’s Make a Deal too. Pam stole Forrester designs for Jackie M. Of course a month later we saw Nick, Lesley, Owen, and Bridget all exit in the same episode.
