I don't know for sure, but I assume Sara Louise died as a child. Because Louise and Phil Capice (her parents) remained on the show until the early 1970s. And I don't remember them having a living daughter.

Now, were Louise Capice and Laurie Ann's mother sisters? Reason I ask is, Laurie Ann refers to Winston Grimsley as her grandfather, and I believe Winston Grimsley was Louise Capice's father. So was Winston also Sara Karr's father? Were Sara and Louise sisters?

I believe they were step-sisters. Louise's father Winston married Sara's mother Mattie.

I can't say I'm the biggest The Edge of Night fan but I really liked the use of music in this last episode posted. I also thought the use of the Christmas decorations was a great way to revisit the past. That whole sequence in the Karr house was pretty fascinating. The set seemed very small, but the conversation gave such depth and dimension to the home talking about the kitchen and the "infamous" decision to dump the twin beds for a full. I've seen Linda Cook mostly in her more animated role as Egypt Masters on Loving and in some throw away parts as the mother of schemers on One Life to Live and Guiding Light. She is very effective as Laurie even though she's been gone for several years.

Am I reading correctly that Laurie's return wasn't for just the finale but that the plan had been to bring her back before cancellation was announced and that there was a longer story planned? I was a bit surprised that Mike Karr let his grandson off his radar enough that he was unaware of where his whereabouts was, but I guess that generated better story.

The Sky / Raven and Mark / Michelle stuff does little for me. I like the use of Pachibel's Canon in their scene (I think it was their scene) as I was just talking about Ordinary People in the Another Life thread. Christopher Holder and Sharon Gabet would be involved again on Another World in the following year, correct?

A lot of the newer female actresses female a bit green. And I felt Larkin Malloy overplayed some things but maybe Sky was just suppose to be an over the top character.

Didi's law partner Marty who was mentioned is the Native American man from a story earlier in the fall correct?

I LOVED Robert Gerringer's early work on Texas under the Corringtons. Del seems colorful, but I think the Gerringer has so much more range that I hope was utilized.

@vetsoapfan The scene has finally arrived. The specific scene is around 9-10 minutes in. There are a few other scenes throughout the episode.

Did Sara Louise die or did she just leave town? I couldn't tell from Laurie's phrasing.

I wish they hadn't taken several weeks to get Laurie Ann back in the house and with her family, but these are beautiful moments, and I'm glad the show honored its history to some degree amidst this very jumbled end run. I could swear Forrest Compton is genuinely near tears at one point.

Much appreciated, @DRW50 .

I was hoping that nothing would get in the way of this episode being uploaded again.

With all new people running the show, it did surprise me that they mined TEON's history. I figured TPTB would just ignore it. Hearing the names Mattie, Winston , Sarah-Louise and Capice made me feel nostalgic and verklempt. Laurie Ann was just a young child when I became acquainted with this soap, so these scenes made me feel like I was being reunited with old friends; friends I would soon never see again.

Mattie's death was referred to on-screen in the early 1970s, and we saw Winston and Mike at the wake. Winston's passing went unobserved completely (as I recall) a few years later. Phil, Louise and Sarah-Louise all left town, alive and well. Louise was the last to go. Her final scene was saying farewell to Nancy in the Karr living room.

TEON is not one of the soaps I talk about a lot of this board, but I really did love it for about 20 years.

I have now saved this episode. It was such a treat. I don't want to lose it again.

Thank you for posting this. So respectful that they mentioned Winston Grimsley during one of the final episodes. And of course, mentioning the surname Capice, which hadn't been spoken in a script for at least a decade, was also very meaningful to long-term fans. I'm a bit surprised no mention was made of Phoebe Marceau, since Laurie Ann and Phoebe had been teen-age and young adult friends. Still, a nice tribute to the past in Monticello.

I think the writers probably referred to Sarah-Louise, since she was related to the other characters Nancy and Laurie were discussing, and since Laurie and S-L had relatives in common.

Sarah-Louise remained among the living and was last seen in 1970 as a young adult. (IIRC, her nefarious boyfriend had been drugging S-L's dad). She left town around the same time as Louise Grimsley Capice, circa 1970, maybe a bit earlier. Her father, Phil Capice, had left in 1969.

When the show began, Winston Grimsley had had a daughter (Louise Grimsley) with his first, deceased wife. He then married a widow named Mattie Lane, who had had a daughter named Sarah Lane from a previous marriage of her own. So Louise Grimsley and Sarah Lane became step-sisters.

Sarah-Louise Capice (through her adoptive mother Louise Grimsley Capice) and Laurie Ann Karr (thanks to her biological mother being the late Sarah Lane Karr) both considered Mattie and Winston to be grandparents.

From seeing 1970s episodes online and live back in the day, I recollect that the Karrs had a kitchen and dining room at one point. They may have even had a patio. If I’m not mistaken, I think Laurie’s ex Johnny disappeared with John Victor. It was nice to see Laurie state that JV was nine years old, meaning he wasn’t SORASed.

Yes, Marty Stillwater was Didi’s law partner. He first appeared during the Isis storyline in 1983 and then moved on to a strange story with his grandfather Standing Elk in early 1984.

As I recollect, Del was not a fan favorite. During Sharon Gabet’s Edge watch parties on Facebook, viewers hated the character. They especially hated seeing him in a relationship with Geraldine. I much preferred Gerringer in his roles on Texas and The Doctors.

I remember the Capice's leaving the show, but I don't remember the details. In fact, all these years I thought they just disappeared, rather than moving-away on camera. I do remember one scene that began with Nancy standing at her front door saying good-bye to Louise. But the audience saw Louise only from the back as she walked away. Louise didn't have any lines. I believe that was technically Louis's final scene, even though the actress (Mary K Wells) was not present. I could be wrong about that.

Since Phil Capice left a year before Louise, was Phil said to be still in Monticello, but just not on-screen? Or did he have a good-bye scene when Ray MacDonald left? I always believed Ray MacDonald left EON because he was cast in a much larger role on All My Children. But if your dates are correct, that is probably not the case.

One thing I've noticed about EON is there were an unusual number of adopted children, and relatively few pregnancies. Certainly fewer pregnancies than other 30-minute soaps. That seemed to change in the later years of the show. Perhaps TPTB thought having characters pregnant for 9-months prevented them from being involved in the action (murder, crime, mysteries), and that the audience might be uncomfortable seeing a pregnant woman being involved with that kind of danger. I'm just speculating here.

This is beautifully said.

I'm so grateful to all of you here who share your memories of the show. Edge was such a unique show and seemed to be of high quality for such a lengthy period of time. I'm sorry so little of the show is available from those golden years.

If I remember correctly, after Walter Greaza retired, Winston Grimsley still turned-up on Edge of Night on the Christmas Day episodes for several years. Sometimes Mike and Nancy knew he would be stopping by, and other years Winston would just knock at their door unannounced. It was always wonderful to see him. Not sure when his final appearance on Christmas Day was, but it may have been 1973 or 74.

They did seem to leave rather suddenly, almost as an after thought. I remember the family discussing Phil being out of town on business, after RM departed the role of Phil, but I don't recall him having a goodbye scene on camera.

There definitely was an episode with Nancy and Louise standing inside the Karrs' house, beside the front door, in which Mary K. Wells appeared. Louise was there to say her goodbyes, since she was heading out of town. It was very brief. I remember thinking, "That's...it? A branch of an original family tree is just being written out with so little fanfare? We don't even get one final scene with Louise, Winston and Mattie?"

At least we got an explanation as to where the Capices went. I hate when major characters on soaps simply cease to exist, and go unmentioned for years without explanation (Tommy Horton, Carl Williams, Jessie Brewer, Jim Craig, Ellen Stewart, etc.)

RM left TEON for AMC in 1969, as the actor later acknowledged in interviews. His contract was up and AMC made him a good offer.

Yes, characters adopted children and took in foster kids, but there were fewer pregnancies than on many other shows. I've often speculated that the lack of regular pregnancy-related stories was due to TEON's crime format.

I do wish that they'd had Timmy (now Tim) come home from college and get to meet Laurie Ann. They could have even had him say he wanted to become a lawyer, like Mike. I guess they figured bringing back two long lost Karr kids would be too much...

TEON was always good, anyway, but when Henry Slesar assumed the reigns of head writer in 1966, the quality of the material rose noticeably. Very few soap writers have proven to be masters of murder-mystery-crime tales, but Slesar wove intricate and layered suspense sagas beautifully. There were always red herrings, plenty of twists and turns, surprises you never saw coming, and terrifying jolts that could stop your heart. Best of all, the characters were INTELLIGENT, and not dumbed down to keep them clueless and in the dark so the mysteries could be artificially extended.

The fact that Slesar could also develop multi-dimensional characters and weave poignant romance into the mix was icing on the cake.

After reading Ben Affleck and Matt Damon's recent comments of how they were told by Netflix to recap the plot 3-4 times during scenes for their movie due to viewers being busy on their phones, I appreciate the intelligence and respect Slesar carried in his work even more.

Greaza's last year on the show is credited as 1973, but as you remember, he appeared sparingly towards the end. The last time I remember Winston having "plot purpose" was during the Jonah Lockwood story, when he showed up unannounced at the apartment Laurie Ann was sharing with her tacky roommate, Tango, and stumbled across Laurie and Jonah passionately making out on the bed. Winston was NOT impressed, and made that fact known. I adored him.

The 1974 Christmas episode of EDGE is on Youtube. Rose and Joe Pollack, Nancy's parents, visit the Karrs for the holiday, but Winston is neither seen nor mentioned.

I really wanted that to happen too. Alas, viewers are almost always more sentimental about beloved, past characters than new PTB are.

THIS!

Seeing how tepid and poorly thought-out most "mystery" stories on soaps have been over the last four decades or so, it makes my deep admiration for Slesar skyrocket ever higher. I wish everyone could have seen the brilliant Jonah Lockwood/Colin Whitney storyline. It was Slesar at his best. So complicated, so intelligent, and often scary as hell. No wonder the ratings were huge. This will forever be one of my Top 10 favorite soap stories of all time.

Actually it was Jonah Lockwood/Keith Whitney. But Hell yes, that Slesar storyline would be in my Top 5 favorites!! From Laurie Ann dating Jonah(Keith), to Nancy and Martha in Jamaica finding a scorpion in Nancy's bed, to the Keith Whitney reveal after falling from that tower. Jesus Lord -- that was compelling drama!!
