Doing research on soap operas

  • Member

Hi there -

I'm currently doing research for a series I'm working on about the impact of soap operas on American society. We're setting out to prove that the people who watch soap operas, specifically women, are not who many think they are and we want to talk about why they watch.

As part of our research, we are conducting a survey of viewers asking them to share their views and experiences about daytime drama. Names and identifying information (beyond State/Province and Country) are not required and the information collected is for our use alone.

If you'd like to help out, please visit our web site:

for good productions

On the site, you will find a link to a survey - let us know what you think.

Thanks.

Well, the misconception that should be cleared up is that soap opera viewers aren't all women. Millions of men watch just as well, with the same amount of devotion and interest.

Yes.......and not all of the men who watch soaps are gay....

some of them are straight, such as myself.

Are most male soap viewers gay or straight?

I have long said that it ranked like this, greatest amount of audience, to least amount of audience:

straight women

gay men

straight men

lesbians (or gay women, as you prefer)

I could be wrong. And, my opinion could be skewed, because even though I've known many soap fans in real life, I've known many more online.

But, the study they're working on is about women, not about all fans, apparently.

Looking at only Y&R's ratings for last week....More Men(gay or straight) 1,288,000 watch than women 1,255,000. So looks like more men watch soaps than women now. Of course we are missing the older women 50+ so women more then likely still watch more than men.

All My Kids use to have a HUGE Lesbian fanbase. Of course many of them never watched soaps before becoming AMC fans so i huess your right.

If they'd bring Bianca back on & give her a real girlfriend, or bring Lena back, they might get them back.

But, gay people are not the only people who like to see various kinds of diverse stories & characters on their soaps, ... which you probably very well know. Almost a mini-rant there. I'm trying to chill. Someone just mentioned women over 50 & then this.
