MarkH - remember Derek Thurston's wife showed up too. Probably toward the end of Kay & Derek's marriage. She was portrayed by Ellen Weston who would go on to be a writer for GL and Capitol.

She was fantastic as Suzanne and tried to kill Kay so that Derek could inherit her money.

yeah, but here (a) he was a college professor sleeping with his student (we've never seen that since on Y&R, eh?) and (B) he dumped his wife BECAUSE SHE WAS TOO FAT. Even after she lost the weight, he STILL dumped his wife (which turned her lesbian, apparently :) )

A few weeks ago, in a thing on here about "all time favorite scenes", I talked about when

- Suzanne poisoned Kay and got her sent to the nuthouse; there, she KEPT poisoning Kay with chocolates

- another inmate took Kay's diamonds

- when the nuthouse (I'm being flip here...I know that is not the PC name) burned down, Kay was presumed dead

- Kay escaped to Liz's house and de-toxed

- She then plotted her revenge

- First, she drove Suzanne nuts with a haunting. Suzanne had put a tarantula on Kay, and then said 'I don't see any spiders' to Kay. So, Kay did the same--with multiple tarantulas--to Suzanne

- Jill, meanwhile, arranged to marry Katherine's widower. JUST as they were consummating their marriage (i.e., in bed), Kay came back from the dead and scared the sh*t out of both of them

Never loved a story more. Never screamed at the screen in delight more. I even distinctly remember that this all happened in the Summer of 1979. (I missed a critical three weeks because I went to Europe...and I did not have a VCR or anything).

Thanks again for these summaries. They provide details that other sources do not as regards stories and character comings and goings.

This could really be called the golden age if we look at who was writing at the time

AMC Agnes Nixon

AW Harding Lemay

ATWT Robert Soderberg/Edith Sommer

DOOL Pat Falken Smith

DRS Douglas Marland

EON Henry Slesar

GH Eileen & Robert Mason Pollock

GL Jeroma and Bridget Dobson

LOL Margaret DePriest? or Paul & Margaret Schneider?

OLTL Gordon Russell

RH Claire Labine/Paul Avila Mayer

SFT Irving & Tex Ellman?

SOM Robert J Shaw

Y&R William J Bell

Pretty much a who's who of writers.

Can anyone provide clarification on SFT and LOL writers?

Judging by the events on Search,it seems there might have been a change of writers.

eg Eunice being killed off,Chris Delon leaving Jo and Henderson,Patti & Len coming and going etc.

SFT seemed to have a lot of writing changes for a top rating show.

I was trying to do the same as you do Paul: listing the HW and for LOL and SFT, it is confusing.

For LOL, here is what I can say:

"With the writing stints of Margaret DePriest and then Paul and Margaret Schneider, the bigamy triangle continued and other stories were developed but the new-found audience began to dwindle. Wtitten by Gabrielle Upton, "Love of Life"" became more youth-oriented and contemporary, but then Jean Holloway, who had worked in soap-opera infancy, became headwriter, and the bottom fell out." (source: Schemering's encyclopedia)

The last HWs of the show were:

Claire Labine & Paul Avila Mayer (1973-1975) (from the end of WTHI to the creation of RH)

Margaret DePriest (1975- ?)

Paul & Margaret Schneider

Gabrielle Upton

Jean Holloway (? - 1979) (she wrote the Bambi Brewster stuff, that's all I know)

Ann Marcus (1979 - 1980)

For SFT:

"While attempting this three-tier demographic story structure, SFT went through a slew of headwriters, including Theodore Apstein, Gabrielle Upton, Ann Marcus, Peggy O'Shea, Irving & Tex Elman, Robert J. Shaw and Henry Slesar (who wrote the Steve Kaslo death scene). The ratings, though excellent during this period, fluctuated consistently, and constinuity suffered. Joyce & John William Corrington took over in 1978 and write in the Sentell family (...)" (same source)

I really don't understand how Slesar could have been at SFT while it is well-known that he headwrote EON from 68 to 83  Double duty?

The list seems to be like that:

Theodore Apstein (1974-?)

Gabrielle Upton (?-?)

Ann Marcus (? - ?) (before 1977 when she replaced PFS at DAYS)

Irving & Tex Elman (?-?)

Robert S. Shaw (?-?) (probably in 1977, he headwrote Somerset at its end)

Henry Sleasar? (1978)

Joyce & John William Corrington (1978-?)

As a conclusion, I agree with you Paul for SFT it must have been the Elmans, and the Schneiders at LOL. (only a guess)

Henry Slesar did indeed do double duty on Search.

He had previously done the same on Somerset from 70-73.

As he preceded The Corringtons, the stories I remember were Chance Halliday seducing Janet,Jo's involvement with Greg Hartford etc.

I don't know how long he wrote for Search-it may have been an interim thing.

The Corringtons really revitalised Search,at least in the short term

They introduced

Travis.Laine & Sunny,Lee,Martin,Ted etc

They wrote out Tom,Scott & Kathy,Chance &Kylie

They left to write Texas and the next writer Linda Grover, undid most of the good that had been done.
