Members Southofnowhere
Has anyone heard anything about a Lucus recast? I know i haven't!
Members mr. sweet
I actually think he did this on purpose. He was merging the actor's two roles: Stefano DiMera (Days) and Massimo Marone (B&. I've noticed he does things like that.
Members JackPeyton
it was done on purpose. he always does it. i find it funny people hate him yet they stillr ead the article and respond...
Members Cat
I enjoy reading his columns. It may not be high-brow, but his enthusiasm for the genre jumps off the page. Look at the internet/radio soaps he promotes, too. Calling for Deidre Hall to get an Emmy BEFORE THE SCENES EVEN AIR was a bit much. But I don't necessarily read him to agree with him. And Rick Hearst should be either a Leading Man on GH or offered a Leading Man spot elsewhere. Arguably one of the most fearless actors in Daytime. Members brimike
People get so worked up at Branco, but most of the time, that seems like his intention. He's like the Ann Coulter of Daytime Television... although not nearly as offensive. Most of the time, he's just fun snark, and I think people take him WAY too seriously. And this is coming from someone who DID take him too seriously, and was INFURIATED by him when his column first started showing up on message boards. I really wanted him to go away, thought he was everything wrong with soap journalism. Then I realized that most of my vitriol was aimed at the shows themselves, and that he was just aiming his sarcasm at them the way most of us were on the boards. Like R Sinclair said about Tom Casiello, it's not like Branco's saying anything original - he's either saying exactly what we've been saying for years, or [in Branco's case] he's intentionally going against the grain to create controversy. That's his schtick. ITZ is round-table in-the-moment. Daytime Confidential is edited before airing and therefore more carefully planned Q-and-A. Sara Bibel is considered part of the "press" and conducts interviews and scoops, while Casiello writes conversationally, more "journal" than "journalistic". And Nelson? He likes to ruffle feathers. Every soap blogger out there has something different to offer, and Nelson's offering is purely to ignite long threads like these where people praise him or hate him. As for the Stefano Marone flub, he posted on a-competing-board that it was a joke. He also keeps referring to Dorian Lord as Dorian DiMera. He likes to smush names. Members MarkH
The only issue is this: There are a few times when he goes BEYOND provocative to short-sighted. The first time I recall was when he did a long rant on Marlena Delacroix (not named, as I recall). It seemed unnecessary. What was the point? She had taken him to task on something...but the response seemed disproportionate. The second time is this current foo-foo-rah with Barbara Bloom and P&G Publicity. What is the point? Rapprochement would seem more sensible? As you note, even Sara Bibel is doing interviews now...so Nelson will be more and more marginalized. In the end, if he ONLY offers opinion and rehash of items taken elsewhere, he will not draw the same number of eyeballs. He needs original scoop. But, I think, most notably, the third time is his public castigation of Bradley Bell's hiring of Kay Alden as co-HW. Nelson was on the GOOD SIDE (I thought) of the Bells. Why intentionally inflame them? I guess if we can give him points for unvarnished directness, but I get uncomfortable when there seem to be clear public signs of a self-sabotage motive. We'll see.... Members Cat
I wonder what's his beef with Kay Alden. Sara Bibel needs to stop being part of the press and get rehired as a Y&R Associate/Breakdown Writer.
Members brimike
Mark, you're right, no question about it. And in the long run, Nelson may end up shooting himself in the foot. And the leg. And the groin. And probably right between the eyes. But for the time being, he strikes me as being SO over-the-top, it's hard to take anything he says seriously. I mean, he used the hyperbole for Carlivati that he used for the Casey/Emily reveal, and now the Rick Decker story. (Really? The Rick Freakin' Decker story?!) Everyone's either a Savior or The Devil. So I don't see the point in getting aggravated over anything he says, because sometimes I think he's just trying to raise people's ire. ETA: I just re-read that first part. I wasn't implying NB was going to commit suicide. Just taking the "shoot yourself in the foot" metaphor to the next level. Hope it wasn't misinterpreted. LOL! Members MarkH
So, full disclosure here: I've been publically castigated by this writer myself, on Usenet . He actually accused me of homophobia...which...well...it doesn't fit. The thread basically was commenting on who Nelson liked or didn't like...some of the posters took it in the direction of "it is who he wants to sleep with"...and Nelson objected. For the record, I THINK HE WAS RIGHT. The thread shouldn't have gone there...although other posters defended the line of discussion from his own prose (e.g., comments, I think, about Kyle Lowder). The whole thread is here. My point is this: He googled his name, saw something was being discussed, and came in an attack mode and with some threats (about writing up the "offending" posters in an article as an example of all that was wrong with daytime fans). He didn't read or discuss...he had his mind made up. And, his posture was instantly confrontational. I LOVE the Nelson Report. I read it weekly, and I take it for what it is (as brimike has well summarized). But if he even gets into conflagrations with insignificant web-poster ME, whom Sylph has earlier characterized as zen-like...well...I think maybe he goes looking for trouble. And it precisely BECAUSE I love his report that I don't want him to go flaming out too soon.
Members brimike
ABSOLUTELY he goes looking for trouble. Look at that Daytime Confidential interview! And reading that usenet thread - WOW! He really was just ready for a throwdown, and it didn't matter what was relevant and what wasn't. He tends to try and drag as many people as he can into the quagmire. The worst part is, his column has turned out to be fun, mindless entertainment... and that's what he should stick to. Instead, he drags his own name through the mud (as well as try to drag fans' names through the mud) Other "insiders" interact with the fans regularly, but it doesn't become an all-out melodrama where everyone gets dragged down into the lily pond with them. It's just unnecessary. Write the column. Make us laugh. Piss us off. Make us debate. But stop trying to "pop off" to everyone who disagrees with you all the time. Sorry. Rant mode off.
