This.

The show just seems off since John Middleton left. Never realized it till Ashley was killed off that he was truly the heart of the show since Jack Sugden died.

He should have been, but unfortunately the Marlon/Laurel and Sandy abuse stuff downgraded him quite a bit. I don't think Emmerdale has had any particular heart in a long time - even Jack in his last years was a bitter, isolated man. The closest I think the show could come to having that again is Moira, if they tried, which they probably won't.

For me the show feels hollow and empty. There are no real friendships and there's no sense of community anymore. It's just a bunch of, mostly immoral and selfish, people interacting. I do miss Ashley, but there are other characters who left in recent years that also left a void which seems hard to fill: Betty, Val and Edna.

I miss Val more than I thought I would.

I miss the old Val. The Val of her last few years I found much tougher to take - she was just a bit "too much."

I miss community stalwarts like Edna or Alan. You don't have anything like that on the show anymore. The older characters are mostly isolated or comic figures. Maybe that's a reflection of society in general, as there aren't any on the other UK soaps either. I still miss them.

I think there are more efforts at community now than there was under Oates, but it often feels very sloppy.

I can't believe I didn't think of Alan!

I am happy that Eric has a story again. I didn't think that would happen after Val's death, but did it really have to involve a Dingle? (Silly question I know. Practically everything on this show has to involve a Dingle..... <_<)

I wonder how long Sandy and Pearl will be kept on. Pearl especially has been increasingly isolated after Betty's and Edna's departures. I'm sure there are some distant Dingle relatives standing in the wings, ready to join the rest of the pack.

I hope the love interest is this new character Graham being played by the actor who played Farmer Tim on Downton Abbey. He's hot and I'd like to see Aaron with an older man.

I'd love to see Robert's reaction to seeing Aaron w/ a "real" love interest

The show continues to clean up at awards shows. It just won in all four soap categories at the TV Choice Awards. (Not the biggest accolade out there, but still). To the casual observer, Emmerdale is doing great.

How long until it becomes clear that the show is running on fumes and can't hide behind the praise around Ashley's story?

Clear to who? To ITV? As long as the ratings stay decent, they don't really care about the rest. The show has been worse than this and nothing was done. To fans? Fans have always said the show is terrible, when it is or isn't, for as long as I've been reading UK soap forums.

A lot of their votes are coming from fans of "Robron" - so once that tapers off, as I imagine it will soon enough (probably by the next awards), other soaps will win - likely Corrie, which is poor, but currently has the hype. The problem is all the other soaps are just as bad, so it's difficult to see a soap win as anything based on merit these days.

Dear God, tonight's episode was awful. That child playing Amelia is terrible but the writers seem to think she's a riot and are including her more and more. The business with the missing car was tedious beyond belief. The Nell/Jai storyline is atrocious. Yikes.

I think sometimes it's more about availability with child actors as she didn't appear for long periods of time in the last year or two. She used to appear a lot more than she does now.

She's also 2-3 years older than her character.

Well, she's awful. She constantly rolls her eyes and her line readings are fake and robotic.
