Robin Strasser says that Stephen Markle is returning as Mel for the 40th anniversary. She does stress that some characters who are showing up may be dead or assumed dead.. she refers to Mel as one of those assumed dead...(plane crash, no body).

I hated what JFP did to Mel, and I'm glad that he's returning and couple possibly stick around. His "death" was very open-ended, so they could easily bring the charcter back.

Honestly, I doubt he'll be back for more than a few haunting scenes. I suspect Dorian's conscience will start to get the better of her, and her conscience will take the form of Mel Hayes.
