I am planning to jump back into this show since I never watched it from the beginning. Can someone give me a reasonable episode to restart with? I dropped it just a few weeks after Marcy Walker joined, it is so deadly boring. When does it get better??

It gets better in January 1985 with the start of the serial killer storyline. It starts out of nowhere with episode 114.

If you go back a week though, to 109, you can see the start of Cruz and Eden as an official couple, with Cruz manhandling Eden, tackling her to the floor, treating her like crap --  that time period's way of showing how much chemistry they would have..

The storyline from 109 that Cruz and Eden are in about a sunken ship gets dropped as Cruz eventually becomes the chief cop investigating the serial killer. From the start, Cruz is laughably terrible at his job, letting the killer easily escape, inadvertently giving the killer the heads up as to where his victim will be, etc.

In the Nov 27, 1990 issue of SOD, James DePaiva (best known as Max Holden on OLTL) reveals he was in talks with SB to replace Justin Deas as Keith Timmons.  Negotiations fell through because DePaiva and producers couldn't agree on scheduling issues.

Speaking of scheduling issues, did you know Justin Deas was originally supposed to play the character of Kelly Capwell's saxophone-playing neighbour Dr. Justin Moore, a role written specifically for him.  Deas "had become unavailable at the last moment" and the role went to Larry Poindexter after a rush-audition.  When Deas became free again, he was offered the role of Keith Timmons - and the character of Justin Moore was phased out to make room for Timmons.

Thanks. It's a shame things didn't work out better for Larry. I've always had a soft spot for him, and he really did have to do just about everything in the acting business to get through, including softcore.

Feels odd seeing A Martinez used in this way. I guess this was very very early on for his SB run.

(I didn't even know the Search guy)

I'm watching the episodes where Peter kidnaps Kelly after her wedding to Joe, from mid-February 1985, 139 on. Their scenes are well acted. I'm struck by all the outdoor location work. Kelly's menaced by a snake and a cougar while trying to get away from Peter. She even blows up a car. The show seemed to have money to burn doing all this stuff!

I'm not enjoying the other main story as much, with Sophia. Her disguises and accents are just so lame, it's hard to believe no one would recognize her. I'm not sure if Judith McConnell is quite the right actress for this current storyline. She can't do creditable accents for the life of her.

Lionel has been kept in jail for too long. Back in December 84, he almost seemed to be the new star of the show. Having him in jail for two months has really diminished his role.

A recent A. Martinez interview. Insane how much racist b.s. Martinez had to endure because of his character's romance with Eden. It would probably be worse today.

Thanks @chrisml

Eden and Cruz were so idolized by many from so early on, I'm not sure I've ever heard A Martinez talking about the backlash he received. It is another reminder that being perfect, as Cruz often was, still does not stop bigotry or racism.

Oh, that's so funny to me because my reaction & impressions are so very different. I loved Judith McConnell as Sophia & appreciated all of her disguises & accents not in the sense of their being consistently realistic, because they not only weren't, they weren't intended to be. But, you always knew what the intent was & what the elements being used were meant to stand for, if that makes any sense at all. But, it truly was always a "performance" not an actuality, again if that makes sense.

Abrupt change of subject: Have you ever seen the Russian version of the "stunt, recast reveal" where it changes from Terry Lester as Mason to Gordon Thompson as MasonWannaBe? If not, here it is with the bonus of getting to hear Julia dubbed in Russian.

And it's so interesting how often interracial relationships in t.v. shows and films use the "perfect partner" trope to prevent those complaints but it never works because racists don't care. I don't recall Martinez speaking too much about this, and I'm sure he didn't want to make a deal about it at the time because it might encourage the bigots to get louder (as well as for other reasons).

Like what other reasons? That he wanted to be a team player or something like that?

I do think there is some method to the madness when they idealize an interracial couple to some degree because it gives them rootability for the non-bigots. They know they're going to get backlash so it's that much more important that the couple be wildly popular!

    • I liked that Steffy told Liam that he should tell Hope about his tumor. As acrimonious as Steffy & Hope are to each other, I'm glad they don't use their kids as pawns.
    • So early this morning, what I'm calling a crazy fan rumor, saying that the whole GH writing team is being replaced, wholesale, which I frankly don't believe. Wouldn't even post it except to warn others,  y'all, since you also may see it, read it, etc.  Of course what we will do is what we always do, watch the credits & find out what happens WHEN IT HAPPENS!!!
    • I can't wait until he does one of these for BTG.  He's done them for several soaps so far.   LOL at Sara Bibel https://x.com/deepsoap/status/1917700444312461350
    • You could see some kind of Rita/Vanessa showdown being set up, whether it was over Ed or Alan in 1981. (as Vanessa/Henry used the affair to blackmail Alan) But it doesn't seem like Ed/Vanessa were given a lot of time to work, when they only entered each other's orbit in March after Vanessa's "suicide" attempt. Rita's gone by June, it seems and Mart was fired. OG Vanessa seems to be the negative-reverse of Rita. Rita made unfortunate and selfish decisions, but she was never malicious or scheming.  In '87, Alan just seems like the irritant in Vanessa's relationship with Ross. Alan's only real interest in Vanessa was her Chamberlain stock (as he's involved in the weird art forgery/Valere mess and had kicked Phillip and Alex out of Spaulding) and Vanessa and Reva seem more invested in egging each other on than in Alan. When she leaves for Venezuela, Vanessa explains to Reva she wasn't in love with Alan, but thought she could be in a "modern" marriage and enjoy the power that came being Mrs. Spaulding (or something like that). But she realized when Billy called that he needed her , while all Alan needed was a "suitable" hostess. She also tried warning Reva from getting further involved with Alan, but of course, Reva ignored that advice. They even seemed to be setting up another go round between Ross and Vanessa on her exit. They have a tender goodbye, while Alan arrives too late to make an appeal for her to stay.
    • One of many problems of this show. It seems so easy to pick on Ashley and Derek but there's a plethora of issues that have nothing to do with either of them.

Uh oh, is this the Gilly storyline everyone seemed to hate? We'll see how I feel, but for now, I'm just glad Vivian and Gilly have screen time!  They've been sorely underused in 1995. I noticed in the end credits recently that the actress playing Vivian is on contract while her husband is recurring. I haven't warmed up to the Griffin character, as he's quite pushy and not overly endearing yet. I'm not quite sure if Wolf dons the Marian getup, I'll let you know, but I'm going to doubt it. They've all now realized Marian is a man, and Brent left his wigs/clothing at the house and he now has Lucy hostage in the lighthouse as Brent. I actually found an interview from 2023 that Frank Beaty did with this online Italian group who are big GL fans. I was quite shocked and happy to run across this! Frank seems to be a really nice man. The interview is a bit of a slog, because half of it is the co-host translating back and forth. But here are some pretty fascinating facts that Frank mentions: -He originally auditioned for the role of Matt Reardon, but didn't get it. The producers remembered his audition and offered him the role of Brent Lawrence later. How interesting! -He was offered a second year on the show, but declined. He wanted to find meaning in life, research his faith and start a new chapter in life. He said declining the second year was ultimately one of his biggest regrets. The storyline offered to him was Brent's rehabilitation in a facility that Amish Abigail was going to work in and help him with, and she and Brent were going to become friends... how interesting that could have been! -He was very close with Rick Hearst and Sonia Satra, almost like the three musketeers. -Makeup for Marian took 3 hours each time. Between the time commitment of that, the pressure of the show, and his personal life which was going through some really hard times, he said he had a nervous breakdown and couldn't continue functioning on set. He was very complimentary of Mark Wolf replacing him. -Frank is currently getting back into acting and is excited about his future (although 2 years later now, curious to see if anything came out of this). He's dating a woman in Paris, long-distance. Honestly wasn't sure if Frank was gay or not, but I guess this helps give insight there.
