Members Soapsuds
At soapcentral they are reporting that ATWT and GL have been renewed through Sept. 2009 with an option to be picked up in 2010.

Members brimike
Great news - hopefully both shows can get back on track now! We can't afford to lose ANY show right now. But shouldn't that be "renewed in 2010 with an option to be picked up in 2009"? I don't really get how they can be renewed through September, possibly go off the air, then get picked up in 2010? Or is that supposed to be "an option to be picked up THROUGH 2010"?
Members Soapsuds
I believe it is an option to be picked up through 2010

Members dragonflies
I'm glad, I hate to see any soaps cancelled.
Members Ryan
It would have been nice if they were renewed on the condition exec changes were made within the show.
Members Soapsuds
So true...like Goutman and Wheeler out!!!
Members Juliajms
Were you really hoping they wouldn't be? Soaps are already on the brink of extinction we can't afford to lose another. At least where there is life there's hope of new writers.
Members Ryan
No, I wasn't hoping they would be canceled. I just wanted more out of the renewal. Like forced exec changes. We can't afford to lose another soap, but if these people continue to stay in charge, they'll drive away the viewers they have left.
Members UKBoi
ITA. At least when DAYS was renewed a few years back on the provision that JER was to be installed as headwriter, regardless of the consequences, it did show that NBC was at least a little bit invested in bringing the show's ratings up and back to its former glory. With GL and ATWT being renewed without any sort of condition on it, it either shows that CBS dont see that Goutman and Wheeler (in Wheeler's case probably more Kriezman, as she at least seems passionate about the genre...I'd rather she attempt to be edgy and fail than not try anything new at all), are destroying their shows and letting them die a slow, painful death! Members Y&RWorldTurner
It's not up to CBS to make creative choices at their soaps, they don't own any of them. PGP has always made the behind the scenes decisions, and sadly, they don't think their soaps are in need of any revitalization at the moment and probably never will again. Members UKBoi
Yes but CBS could always step in and day we'll only renew it IF serious changes are made and quality increases. NBC doesnt own DAYS and they were still able to add conditions to the renewal. Y&R had a SLIGHT dip in quality (Latham's worst days were still a million times better than a lot of the crap on the air at the moment) and changes were made, I dont see why PGP arent doing the same. It really makes me think they want out of the soaps business and that's why they're not bothering to keep their shows alive.
Members Y&RWorldTurner
The difference is CBS always praticed benign neglect for the most part with their soaps. They offered to buy both GL and ATWT from PGP in 2002, but PGP wouldn't budge. PGP is also very protective of their soaps, hence why they wouldn't let ABC buy AW outright from them in 99 when NBC canceled it. NBC, on the other hand, has always been power hungry when it comes to DAYS. They interfere and demand things, also, NBC has much more to lose than CBS. NBC is already down to just one soap, from CBS' point of view, they're already the #1 daytime network, they have nothing to lose. Y&R also has the luxury of being the #1 soap with a much bigger and better budget than the PGP soaps. Y&R can afford across the board changes, ATWT and GL cannot. Ever since 2004, all PGP has wanted was to reduce the budget of their soaps and it shows... I believe PGP wants out of the soap business too and has wanted out for a good while now. I think CBS is content with having soaps on their daytime lineup more so than its competitors, but they're not in a position to make changes at any of their soaps and that's never been their policy.
