GL New Opening Theme

i thought it was strange that the lighthouse in the opening is not the same lighthouse they are using in the show itself. i mean, when cassie and reva got lost in the woods, the lighthouse they found was a brick one, not like the white one in the opening. i think that if they took out the characters, the opening would look a lot better. i can't wait to see the other openings.

I never ever watch Guiding Light unless it's on a commercial break channel flip.

But I watched the whole show Friday to see the new look.

I just have one thing to say about the opening.

Kudos.

It was pretty interesting how it was kind of like

Passions/Sunset Beach/Ryan's Hope/ATWT/OLTL

all rolled into one.

I'll have to look out for the other openings GL has.

Good one, stenbeck.

Nah, I'm still not digging the new theme OR opening. It was bad enough when the shaky-cam made stuff like Lizzie and Remy's bathroom romp look like bad porn. This, OTOH, is like someone's sick idea of a tourism video.

Plus, it makes no frigging sense. "Everybody feels low! Everybody feels high!"? Come on. Even "The Pina Colada Song"'s more profound than that garbage!

The opening reminded me a lot of the Ryan's Hope openings, shot-wise -- and that's a good thing! LOL at Kim Zimmer jumping up and down in slo-mo and cheering. The theme, though, is bland BS. They should have taken the singing off and just worked on a theme with a hook.

And speaking of hooks, I adore corny and NOTHING can compare with Guiding Light's disco theme from the early 80s. That sh!t was just disco awesomeness. Especially with the "Yah!" kung-fu fighter in the middle. And the voiceover "And now... Guiding Light!" Unfortunately, I don't think it would fit in with the show's current aesthetic.

Although I wish they'd put in the swoony closing-credits music "Ritournelle." Cheesey but also haunting and beautiful:

I agree the lyrics are kinda corny, but it is catchy. I wish somewhere in the theme song, they had put the words Guiding Light. Maybe they should drum up some press by holding a contest for someone to write new opening lyrics for the show. Not that you need lyrics. I mean look at Dallas and Knots Landing. Those shows had great openings with no lyrics. Same with Y&R. I've always loved its theme.

And I agree with the posters who said don't be hatin' on OLTL. I was never a huge fan of the show (always been CBS soaps), but I would catch it on occasion because I loved Cord and Tina and I really liked the opening theme back then. I loved how they said One Life to Live at the end. Yes, thy name is corny. :D

    • That's true. He may have ended up keeping her on a recurring basis, like Dr. Michaels on ATWT. I'm trying to remember if GL had a similar long-running therapist.
    • Oh in terms of ratings I think it would have been in a dicey place probably even before then. I mostly was just thinking of if the show could have carried on creatively.
    • Even if by some miracle Knots Landing continued, 1994/95 it would have been killed by ER.

    • Assuming that Marland had been allowed to write the Carrie story the way he'd envisioned, Millette would've been involved in the story. And she might've played a role in Andy Norris' return (if the speculation on that had ever materialized, and Marland loved bringing back bad boys) But he doesn't seem interested in Sara's personal life. And the women of Springfield could only be analyzed so much.
    • This better be something, because as I said, so far it's just cliches and stereotypes -- the story we've heard a thousand times about the homeless person who doesn't want a home and prefers to live on the streets.
    • @rsclassicfanforever thank you very much for the recent uploads of season 13 containing some episodes that were skipped or glitchy on YouTube!  I had a look at 3172 though and there is no audio for most of it? Would you have a copy with complete audio? Fingers crossed! Thanks again!

    • I like Margaret well enough in what I've seen of her as Paige - she is green but she has real star power.  I agree about the actor who plays Brian. He's...mostly just there. Not bad but not great.  My main issue is with the guy who plays Owen. He's just not appealing to me. I can believe Nola being obsessed with him, but he's draining to watch.  I'm surprised people objected to the quasi-incest elements as it wasn't anything that new for soaps.  Speaking of Kim, here's a rare episode of an anthology show she did called The Evil Touch.

    •   I get what you're both saying, and I think the show was lucky to have even made it that long, but I think they could have still maintained a certain audience - Second Chances did before the earthquake. CBS was an older network anyway. I think the premise of Knots was still usable, it was more the characters who were a problem - many of the older figures were played out. If the show had done a better job building up its younger cast instead of making so many poor choices in the late '80s and early '90s, they could have kept things going a little longer.
