There was/is nothing original about Babe. She was just originally cast with an actress that (some) people enjoyed. But the fact that Babe doesn't stand out with Amanda Baker and Babe is pretty much secondary shows that the character isn't really all THAT fleshed out and important to the canvas.

I think Julia and gloria at least early on had interesting dynamics--Gloria especially, I loved all the stuff with her abusive mom who made Carrie's mom in Carrie look kind and like an aatheist. It fleshed out the character and her skankiness in a dramatic and realistic fashion

When Babe was introduced it seemed clear they were gonna do this too--remember when she first called Krystal, they cut to Krystal in bed with a random man and making excuses to get back to the guy and hang up with babe? then like 2 weeks later that history between mother and daughter was all rewritten (unfortunately imho)
