The Suds Report: February 8, 2008

By Nelson Branco

Victoria Rowell ‘OLTL’-bound? ‘Dancing’ hunk joins ‘AMC’! Did ‘DAYS’ fire its writing staff?

SUDS REPORT: NEW YORK-BOUND!

I’ll be attending the hottest soap event this spring when ABC’s biggest stars gather for the fourth annual ABC Daytime Salutes Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS benefit. Your favourite boldface, along with the cast of The View, will perform music and comedy for a good cause on March 2 at 7:30 pm at the Town Hall in New York City. You can order tickets online or call (212) 840-0770.

EXEC APPOINTMENT: DAYS’ WORST ENEMY?

Bruce Evans is the guy you can blame if NBC decides to cancel Days of our Lives this spring. Evans, who has been promoted to senior VP of Daytime, took over for Annemarie Kostura.

All My Children, A-Channel/ABC — Dancing with the soap stars!

My favourite dancing instructor on Dancing With The Stars, hunky Maksim Chmerkovskiy, will reunite with former Season 5 star, Cameron Mathison (Ryan) on Feb. 26. Maksim, who will play himself, will teach the women of Fusion how to pole-dance. In story news, there’s clearly a two-for-one deal on telling the truth in Pine Valley: Angie finally learns Jesse’s alive, and Kendall confesses that she slept with Aidan.

As The World Turns, Global/CBS — Must-read Scott Bryce interview

While I’m not Scott Bryce’s (Craig) biggest fan, he’s now become my new hero after he purged himself to TV Guide’s Michael Logan regarding his less-than-stellar comeback, his tense relationship with exec Chris Goutman, and whether or not Craig will be recast. Check it out here if you haven’t read it yet.

Add my name to the growing list of Dylan Bruce fans. Although it took a while for nuChris to take off, the sexy actor, who sports daytime’s best male haircut, has begun making the role his own. And I like what I see. Bruce’s Chris reminds me of a character Melrose Place would feature — and I mean that as a compliment. He sure is pretty, too!

Is future Emmy winner and 2008 Soap Opera Spirit Lead Actor nominee, Jon Hensley (Holden), leaving ATWT? My Oakdale sources say, “no way!” As for Trent Dawson (Henry), 2008 Soap Opera Spirit nominee for Best Supporting Actor, he’s finally inked a new deal to stick around and terrorize Brad.

America has a woman and a black man running for president, yet ATWT refuses to treat its gay characters, Noah and Luke, like first-class citizens — discuss! I wish the soap had never allowed Noah and Luke to go all the way physically because it set up an expectation that ATWT was committed to pursuing this groundbreaking romance fairly. Months later, for some odd reason, ATWT is avoiding any kind of passion between the couple — and it’s pretty obvious. Meanwhile, while the soap is editing and controlling what they deem appropriate for us viewers, they are spinning much more wholesome tales about professional mothers moonlighting as hookers; a creepy puppeteer, who is harassing an innocent child; murder; drug addiction; and baby kidnappers. Yikes! Perhaps, GLAAD should rethink the CBS sudser’s Best Daily Drama nomination for its upcoming Media Awards this spring. I wonder if the upcoming Valentine’s Day episode, which finds all of its couples asking, “What if…” will have Nuke wondering what it’d be like to be straight!?

The Bold and the Beautiful, CTV/CBS — B&B: At crossroads?

I know everyone loves B&B now, especially after former Y&R scribe Kay Alden joined the show, but I’m not digging it as much as I used to. I’m a die-hard Brad Bell fan, and I’m finding Alden’s B&B a little dark, predictable, passionless, and repetitive. But what do I know? I’m even sick of Brooke and Stephanie these days. Brooke should have put her well-heeled foot down when she negotiated Storm’s get-out-of-jail-free card — and her forgiveness should have been enough for La Forrester. I can’t believe Brooke agreed to Stephanie’s demands, that not only should she be forgiven for setting up the events that led to her rival’s rape, but to also have the audacity to ask Donna to dump Eric? And die-hard romantic Brooke, who has been the victim of Stephanie’s past machinations, went along with it? Where’s the remote control? Also, what does Alden have against Ashley Abbott? Once again she’s treating Eileen Davidson like she has a infectious disease or something! Also, I’m not buying Rick’s sudden interest in Taylor. This is a woman he has never respected, but now all of a sudden he’s her best friend. If I were Brooke, I’d disown him.

Coronation Street, CBC — Star’s brush with death!

Newsflash: Liz Dawn would have died if she had not stopped smoking. Well, duh. According to the vet’s physician, Prof. Ashley Woodcock, Dawn was told that she had only a third of her lung capacity left when she was diagnosed with emphysema in 2004. The 68-year-old, who plays the cranky, yet lovable Vera Duckworth on the soap for 34 years, revealed recently that she now takes eight forms of medication to combat the disease. She says, "I wouldn't be here now if it wasn't for the medication that I'm on. I just wouldn't be able to function."

Days of our Lives, Global/NBC — More shocking firings! Who’s next?

Here we go again: The writing staff, led by Emmy winner Hogan Sheffer, has been fired, reports an online source. Due to the writers’ strike, former OLTL scribe Dena Higley is penning the series, and will probably continue to do so. A spokesperson did not return my emails by press time to confirm or deny the story, despite the fact that several of the terminated writers are talking anonymously. This is all I’ll say: it’s inhumane to fire your writing staff while they’re striking, if this story is true. Can you imagine if a prime-time series axed their writing staff right now? There’d be hell to pay, for sure!

Marcus Patrick (ex-Jett) may have been fired from Days, but he’s probably the only soap star who is an out gay man. That’s quite the achievement for a young soap hunk in daytime. And he’s engaged! Patrick should come to Canada and tie the knot — it’s legal here! His openness about his sexuality has made me wonder if we will ever see the day when actors don’t have to hide their homosexuality. Check out this interview for more on Patrick.

Meanwhile, former Salem sweetheart, Christie Clark (ex-Carrie) is expecting a child with her hubby, Tom. Austin Peck (Brad, ATWT) swears he is not the father.

EastEnders, BBC Canada — February Sweeps Preview

This week, the action picks up at the Walford East station: Devastated by Alfie’s rejection, Kat decides to leave the Square; Jake realizes that Chrissie hasn’t been entirely honest with him; Sam’s shocked when a familiar face comes to help her; Alfie chases after Kat — but can he catch her? Meanwhile, Peggy storms around the Square.

General Hospital, CTV/ABC — Will someone tell Laura her sister died?

Sad news: Shell Kepler, who played Laura’s sister, the gossipy, yet lovable Amy Vining for 23 years, died Friday at Oregon's Health and Science University Hospital reportedly from renal failure. She was 49. At press time, a rep was still trying to find out if the soap plans on writing in the real-life death.

Meanwhile, this week in Port Chuck: Sonny and Claudia do battle; Kristina sees the Text Message Killer; Liz and Nikolas think they hit Sam; Trevor forces Marianna to betray Ric; Robin makes a decision regarding Patrick; and Lulu wonders if Logan is a killer.

Don’t believe those rumours that have Soap Opera Spirit nominee Kirsten Storms bolting from GH as Maxie. She says: "I am working a lot [with Bradford Anderson] and loving every second of it. I have no intentions of returning to Days, nor have they asked me. I'm beyond happy in Port Charles, and plan to stay there as long as they will let me.” Smart move.

It looks like Ignacio Serricchio may be back on the GH canvas as Diego. Rumours suggest he’s the Text Message Killer or he will be involved with the Corinthos-Zacchara turf war. Hey, GH: here’s a quarter — call someone who cares.

Guiding Light, Global/CBS — Catfight alert!

Now this should be good: On Tuesday, that hair model Cassie attacks Reva! I can’t wait to see Kim Zimmer wipe the floor clean with that self-righteous sister of hers! Also, this week: Bill betrays Lizzie; Olivia has heart problems — literally; Rick fears for Beth’s life; Marina catches Cyrus in a lie. And I get a great hour’s sleep!

One Life To Live, A-Channel/ABC — Victoria Rowell: Llanview bound?

Is former Y&R superstar, Victoria Rowell (ex-Dru) heading to Llanview? That’s the latest rumour making the rounds. When I contacted Rowell’s peeps, all they could say was: “Victoria is in New York City over the next few days taking meetings — and that is all we can confirm for now.” Honey, take the role — you’ll be very happy you did! I wonder if she’ll play a new character, or if she’ll be an Evangeline recast — if ABC is courting Rowell. Coincidentally, Y&R has been mentioning Dru a lot these days. Regardless, I bet there’s no in-house vote regarding this casting decision!

The Red Ball kicks off this week! What can we expect? Allison torments poor Roxy about Rex’s paternity; Michael and Marcie try to reignite that loving feeling; and Gigi tells Rex the truth about Shane. And by the way — don’t assume that Shane’s Navy Seal “father” is a figment of Gigi’s imagination because word is OLTL is casting the role. Speaking of Gigi, isn’t Farah Fath amazing in her Llanview reincarnation? Every time I see her on-screen, I light up. Fath’s line delivery is really refreshing and unique, and she also brings a lot of spunk to the show. And do I detect chemistry between her and Michael Easton (John)?

So far, the most improved couple of the year has got to be Rex and Adriana. I’m falling in love with Melissa Fumero, who gets better and better each day — especially when her inner bitch comes out. I’m going to miss her when she departs OLTL. Perhaps, she’ll reconsider leaving.

Passions, DirecTV/SuperChannel — Will Gwen kill Pilar?

Harmony is anything but harmonious this week: On Tuesday, Ivy is attacked; Rebecca urges Gwen to kill Pilar; Paloma tells Noah to get lost; while Tabitha has this shocking prediction: Britney Spears is headed for disaster! What would we do without, Tabby?

The Young and the Restless, Global/CBS — Will Cane and Lily have sex?

Quick — who uses more peroxide — Adrienne Frantz (Amber) or Michael Graziadei (Daniel)? I call them the Barbie twins now!

In Genoa City story news, Victoria learns that JT contemplated sacrificing the baby to save her life; Victor Jr. replaces Nick as the new Newman heir; Pat Benatar sings with Karen at Indigo; Cane and Lily get close — real close on Valentine’s Day!

SOAP SYLLABUS: The gay, old days — ATWT’s Nuke kiss!

Remember the good old days when ATWT’s Noah and Luke were allowed to show their affection for one another? Good times. Let’s take a trip down memory lane and see why coming out isn’t good for your sex life. Click here and here.

CASTING COACH: Kelly Bishop — OLTL’s new Melinda Cramer?

Gilmore Girls’ Kelly Bishop is one of my all-time favourite actresses. She reminds me a lot of Robin Strasser (Dorian, OLTL), which got me to thinking: With almost all of the Cramer women reunited under one roof, wouldn’t it be cool if OLTL filled out the family by recasting Melinda Cramer with Bishop?

REMOTE CONTROL: THE SUDS EDITION

Summarizing the good, the bad, and the ugly on daytime TV

REWIND: MASTER CLASS ACHIEVEMENTS

OLTL revives Roxy; Bo and Nora; and Dorian’s feud with Viki

I’m not accusing head writer Ron Carlivati of writing OLTL while he pickets, but it’s clear his influence and talent is still steering this marvelous ship during his hiatus. Perhaps, he penned long-term story months in advance for his subordinates to follow because the show hasn’t missed a beat. During the writers’ strike, OLTL continued to fill in the blanks from past regimes, including fleshing out a spectacular yet emotionally devastating confrontation between Nora and Bo regarding her past infidelity; fleshing out Roxy, giving Ilene Kristen her best material yet opposite the vastly improved John Paul Lavoisier (Rex); and reigniting Dorian and Viki’s feud.

Y&R’s on fire!

The only sad part about tuning into Y&R these days is the fact that this impressive level of quality may not last if head writer and executive producer, Lynn Marie Latham returns. So enjoy it now while it lasts! And I officially love Judith Chapman (Gloria) again!

PLAY: EXCITING NEW DEVELOPMENTS

Egads — Y&R’s Adrienne Frantz improves!

Clearly, Jeanne Cooper (Katherine the Great) has had a strong influence on Adrienne Frantz (Amber), who is growing leaps and bounds since I ranted about her performance last week when Kay suffered a minor stroke. I like what I’m seeing, so keep it up, Adrienne!

GH’s Sam kicks ass; Lucky gets a backbone; Maurice Benard is back!

Within minutes of Maurice Benard (Sonny) and Sarah Brown’s (Claudia) on-screen reunion, the mobster seemed like his old self again — finally! Also, I loved last week’s action sequences when Sam kicked the Text Message Killer’s ass, Charlie-Angels’-style. And hurray for Lucky, who finally owned his worth and regained his self-respect after telling Sam to get lost.

PAUSE: STORIES AT CROSSROADS

ATWT’s Holden and Lily reunite

Is anyone buying this contrived reunion? I’m not — though I adore Jon Hensley and Martha Byrne together — because Holden and Lily haven’t addressed the pink elephant in the room.

FAST-FORWARD: SOAP MALFUNCTION IN PROGRESS

GH’s Logan and Lulu lose steam!

Or how to ruin a promising super-couple. Also, why does Julie Marie Berman (Lulu) look so depressed all the time? I need a Xanax to get through her scenes. And is it just me or do you get the impression that GH is thinking about writing out Logan?

Nelson is such a hack.

I can't even fathom LML coming back to Y&R. Really, I don't know if I could take it! I might have to pick up a drinking problem a la Katherine Chancellor and swan around my mansion blitzed. Ugh I just can't even tihnk about it.

If anyone has any good info about that plot ridden bitch being fired permanently please let me know!

    • That was such a missed opportunity, especially with May sweeps.  And, it would’ve been a much better story for Naomi/Jacob than whatever’s going on with June
    • https://www.hulu.com/hub/tv/collections/9979 Amazed! But loving it. What this shows is GH Hulu out of top 15, GH is #2 & this was Saturday. Are we happy campers? Yes, at least for the moment, you bet we are.
    • I forget his name but Tori Spelling and Jennie Garth had the EP on after they didn't understand the 60s flashback episode due to the lack of original music. He felt that was one of his strongest episodes so he came on to explain to them just how much the music changes hurt the series. Basically, they only allowed him to pick a selection of episodes he felt the music was vital and other than that they didn't bother to save the music.  They kept music for prom and things like the Color Me Badd episode and for most of the musical acts but any music you loved from the opening of the show or just music played in random scenes was cut.  I know there are also some scenes cut but I don't know too much about that. The most glaring one was Clare's final scene being cut which is obviously a huge problem for a character who'd been around for so long. Overall I was able to enjoy my rewatch using the DVDs but without all of the original music it isn't nearly as good a show.
    • Too many returns, that's when you know a show has run out of ideas and doesn't care anymore.  Zoe annoyed the sh!t out of me most times, but the Kat/Zoe storyline will always be iconic and close to my heart (that's the era I first started following the show in near real-time), and probably the only storyline in 21st century EastEnders that had long-term value for the characters involved during their initial run together. However, after all this time and the writing choice that Zoe never wants to see Kat again, I think that ship has sailed and I don't know that it makes sense to revisit it at this point.
    • Former EastEnders star Michelle Ryan is reprising her role as Zoe Slater on the BBC soap following an absence of over 20 years.  It’s been reported that Zoe will return to Albert Square later this year and that she’ll take centre stage in a dramatic new storyline involving her family.  The news comes amidst news of other big returns, which include Max Branning (Jake Wood), Tanya Cross (Jo Joyner), Shirley Carter (Linda Henry) and Ben Mitchell (Max Bowden), who will also be back in Walford later in the year.
    • I actually love the new fashion.
    • Admittedly, I was a latecomer to ATWT (first becoming a regular viewer in 2000). But I really liked KMH's Emily. I thought she was a very specific kind of neurotic professional character, and I loved her prickly relationship with MM's Susan. I will say I don't think the show did her any favors after Hal died, stranding her in storylines with several of the show's dullest characters: nu-Paul, nu-Meg, and nu-Dusty. I actually quite liked one of her last major storylines, when she discovered she had a grown-up biological son with Larry named Hunter. But then Hunter just sort of disappeared, and the story fizzled out, which was pretty typical of the late Goutman years.
    • I know the fashions have gotten mixed reviews but I actually like what the new costume designer is putting the cast in. It feels more modern and the more tacky pieces I feel make sense for rich people. They're buying for the brand and the price and we often see celebs in things like this. Especially for a character like Nikki, I feel the more over the top (and tacky), the more realistic it is.
    • Well, her staff pointing out the movie connection never seemed to stop Long from using those plots.  She was right about Vanessa--she needed a man who loved her, which she'd never really had up to then. But as others have pointed out, Long borrowed heavily from Taming of the Shrew to get it done. (which while I kinda disputed that, I get more now, having watched Kiss Me Kate a few times since.)
    • "Holly had her share of the blame..." NO, she did NOT. WOW. That's what you get for trying to be fair and giving these people the benefit of the doubt! The Rita rape episodes do not seem to be available. It sounds like Calhoun thought it was not dramatized, but it was. I saw it when it aired. Yes, it's close to 50 years ago, and memories aren't 100% reliable. I also know that Zaslow reportedly complained that it was written too much like a seduction and that's why the Dobsons portrayed Holly's rape differently. Maybe it started like a seduction and she rejected him and that's when it turned violent. I don't remember that part, if it exists. What I do remember is that Roger threw Rita so violently to the floor that she hit her head. They showed him coming at her from her point of view and he looked all fuzzy. It was an act of violence, not a seduction. Rita kept it a secret until it looked like Roger might be acquited, and then finally admitted it. She didn't make it up, it definitely was not a ploy.
