Welcome to the One Life to Live Discussion Thread for the week of January 14th, 2007. It looks like an exciting week as the hostage drama comes to an end, and the aftermath begins. Hope you enjoy your visit and are prepared to discuss the interworkings of Llanview, PA and OLTL. If so, then you're in the right place. So let the discussion of the good, bad, and ugly that is Llanview, Pennsylvania & One Life to Live begin...

It was a good show, very well directed in how the stand off finished with Michael and Marcie walking out to the cops throwing Marcie on the car like the criminal she is.

Too bad Adrianna had to blame Gigi for everything first. Good thing Rex talked some sense into her because I was about to reach into my screen and slap her silly!

What is to come??? How bout this from today's eppy, Adrianna to Rex: "Let's not let any secrets come between us"

I don't know about you all but I smell sweet Todd revenge!! :D

I like these little "other end of town" episodes. The show seems to separate the front burner stuff with the lighter fare, and it works well. It would be silly to showcase Marcie holding Viki at gunpoint and then cut to Antonio and Talia being cute.

IA, it does help that they seperate the two. Both are good but totally opposite storylines are playing out, but at the same time they will all mesh once again when everyone gets to Llanview. Charlie will learn who Viki really is, Adrianna will learn about Gigi, Viki will learn that Clint and Nora are dating, etc. etc. IMO, excellent soap writing!!

Here are the 411's for the rest of the week, minus todays (tues/wed) preview which showed for tomorrow:

Antonio on the phone trying to make a date with Talia.

Marcie in the same cell as Gigi apologizing for getting her involved.

Nu-Michael asking the FBI guy when Marcie can go home...not anytime soon he's told.

Tessica (with Natalie) telling Viki she has some explaining to do!

Yesterday was amazing! Kathy Brier was pheonomenal throughout this entire storyline and yesterday was no different, she and Chris Stack have such chemistry I felt so badly for both M&M yesterday but am glad this part of the story is finally over.

So glad the recast works so well with her I would like to see this couple come full circle.

    • One of the dumbest situations (Lando) ever. What audience member is going to invest in a storyline with a recast they don't like and a triangle where one character is short-term? It bombed as it should have done. So much of JFP's tenure just reeks of desperation. I don't get how someone could produce SB (which did have flaws but was often brilliant) but make so many terrible mistakes at GL.   I still think JFP would have worked better as a director and music supervisor. Her music work at SB was top notch.  It just seems that Rea was minimized during JFP's tenure because I can't imagine her okaying so many of these casting choices.

    • We see the same with GH, where Mark Teschner, the casting director, reportedly has less say since Frank Valentini took over. Some producers want to take over every aspect of their shows.  I think Lando may have been a CBS push.
    • No idea but she won Emmys & she was the Casting Director at the same time for both ATWT & GL. She hired Lisa Brown with no job for her. Then Marland made Brown his muse so he created both Iva & Nola for her. But, I think we know that Jill does what Jill wants.
    • I did notice a decline in the quality of the performers being cast once Betty R vacated/retired from her position. We would have been spared from the nightmares of some of the castings that dominated the show in the last decade or so of the soap. JFP was an example of someone, no matter the gender, who had no business being in the position they were in.
    • If Betty Rea was the casting director, why was so much of GL during JFP's reign cast by her? Walker, Deas, Crampton, Lando, etc. JFP takes credit for Dusay as well. What is the point of having a casting director, if you don't let her do her job? What happened when Rea left?
    • So much on here slips my mind but this is the first I remember hearing of Peterson's passing. Very sad. Nell was a thankless role, clearly set up for a cheating storyline with Frank, but Peterson did her best.  Betty Rea Rea was the casting director for the soap opera “Guiding Light” from 1970 to 1996 and simultaneously the casting director for “As the World Turns” from 1979 to 1983.
    • Sorry, just one more post on the Thorntons. How did Ruth and Edna feel about each other prior to Tad dating Dotty?
    • I can't remember exactly but I think it may be 1995 as Jake was trying to hide from a loan shark.
