GOLDSBORO, NC -- As is evident from political journalists' email boxes today, the Clinton campaign appears to believe it's found a silver bullet -- served with a side of brie and chardonnay -- in Obama's recent controversial comments.

On the same day that Obama's opponents keep their eyes peeled for outrage from small-town America, Bill Clinton is doing a marathon six-stop campaign day in rural eastern North Carolina, a swing billed by one supporter as a "Barbeque Tour."

But the issue doesn't seem to be sticking. Clinton himself has been silent on the issue. But at the first two events of the day, the campaign has sent one of Carolina's hometown boys out to push the issue before Clinton takes the stage. Tom Hendrickson, a Clinton supporter and former Democratic Party chairman, included a reading of Obama's comments in his introduction of Clinton.

"Senator Obama, don't pity us and think that we're bitter and frustrated," he said in Winterville this morning. "We are hard-working family folks who are smart, and we get it. We don't need pundits to tell us what to think."

Hendrickson repeated the sentiment at a later stop in Winston, but dropped the direct mention of Obama as the source of the quote.

In both instances, Hendrickson's speech evidenced little reaction from the crowd, which had been waiting for the main event for over an hour, and appeared to have little tolerance for a parade of surrogates.

By the third stop of the day in Goldsboro, Hendrickson did not even take the stage.

In Goldsboro, close observers noticed a (light) smattering of stickers being worn by attendees. "I'm not bitter!" read the simple rectangular label on the lapels of a couple dozen in the crowd. The campaign says that the stickers are evidence of outrage at the grassroots level.

Yet it's unclear how spontaneous the sentiment was. A boxful of the stickers was spotted at Clinton's first event of the day -- being whisked backstage.

*** UPDATE *** The Clinton campaign in NC takes responsibility for the stickers, per a campaign aide, but says that the idea originally came from a volunteer.

Stickers have been distributed by volunteers -- given a "green light" by staff -- at four of Bill Clinton's events yesterday.

Which says a lot. I read your post of the article below and I personally feel don't see why I'm supposed to get worked up over this. I think all it does is highlight that this is dragging on so long, the media has to resort to making a fire where there isn't even a flame.

Are they even suggesting that there aren't any bitter voters in the entire country? As usual I fail to see what any of their firestorms are about and I don't know anyone personally who cares about this stuff either. If voters in those states find the remarks offensive then I'm sure they'll let it be known when they vote but to have someone trying to point out to them that they've been insulted is ridiculous. I find it more insulting that they're not focusing on the issue of why some voters might be bitter.

If a person has been out of work for years with no relief in sight then I can see why someone might think they'd be bitter. And not every person seeking out religion is doing so because of any great spiritual motivation. Some people actually do turn to religion in times of despair which can happen to the bitter and maybe out of it comes something spiritual.

They really need to stop acting as if everyone is reactionary and will take the bait. There are certainly reactionary people out there but there are also people who stop and think as to whether something makes sense or not.

Elitist and arrogant are some great code words as far as I'm concerned and I hope she keeps it up to the point where it makes lots of people think more about what she's saying. People on the lower end of the economic scale aren't going to see her as their equivalent and if using those words are supposed to mesmerize them into thinking that Obama has something they should have then I see exactly where she's coming from.

Thanks for a Sunday afternoon laugh. I know that every time I go to the gas station, I am singing that happy song about how wonderfully high the prices are going. Even though I'm not into all the political shenanigans, I wouldn't pass on wearing and I AM BITTER sticker for the fun of it.

The adults in charge sure are funny. They need to air a commercial with average citizens shaking their heads at 3 a.m. when the phone rings, worrying about the next bit of silliness into which their fierce leaders are getting.

Ok.

If Hillary and McCain thought this might have traction, they may be wrong. I'm reading alot of responses at CNN, MSNBC & Crooks & Liars.com, and almost to a person she is getting VILIFIED for pushing this entire argument.

She better leave this alone. Or else this may be the final point that may bury her chances to win the Dem. nom.

I'm reading alot of people who said they were backing Hillary until this.

And, I also remember that Obama was getting slammed on those same boards after that JW stuff.......and now the tone is much different.

I don't understand why hillary drinking with the common folks is such a big deal? She deserves one damn drink, they are acting like she's an alcoholic now.

An about the message boards, I still say they are still pro-obama especially cnn/youtube. People diss hillary even when she doesn't even do anything. Regardless I think the dems have lost this election if they don't come together, I don't even think obama can win it on his own at this point, he has had too many setbacks in the past couple of weeks. I think the dems better brace themselves from Bush III, unless the dems get their crap together.

Thank you. This calling out both Dem candidates is about silly, and I'm guilty of it as well.

Even though you can hit folks with facts, they need to stop this [!@#$%^&*].

McCain is riding high, Hillary & Barack are doing his job for him, and I would truly hate to see that Old Ass Fossil who graduated with Moses get into the WH.

Poll shows Obama gaining, holding steady in key states

Posted: 06:07 PM ET

A new poll shows good news for Obama.

(CNN) — Despite a weekend of negative coverage following his controversial remarks about some small town Americans, Barack Obama appears to be holding steady or making gains in the next three primary states, according to a just released poll.

Most surprisingly, the new LA Times/Bloomberg poll shows Obama ahead of Hillary Clinton by 5 points in Indiana (40 to 35 percent), a state with demographics that favor the New York senator and one where other recent polls have shown her with a lead.

The poll also shows Clinton only holds a 5 point lead in Pennsylvania (48 to 43 percent). That margin is among the slimmest measured between to the two candidates and is significantly less than the double digit lead Clinton held there two weeks ago.

In North Carolina, the new survey shows Obama with a 13 point lead (47-34 percent), a margin that is consistent with other recent polls in that state.

Pennsylvania votes April 22 while Indiana and North Carolina vote two weeks later on May 6. Should Clinton win in Pennsylvania, some political observers have said she must score a victory in at least one of the May 6 states to make a compelling argument to continue her presidential campaign.

The poll was conducted over five days (April 10-14), the majority of which came after Obama's now famous "bitter" comments first surfaced.

Another one of Clintons hatchet men go after Obama.

The founder of BET says that Obama is where is just because of his Race.

It's no big shock most black millionaires are supporting the Clintons because they helped them out bigtime during Bill's term.

Guess the Clintons didn't like the latest poll numbers?

    • I recall @Chris B asking about this but here is an interview Sheri Anderson did with SOU back in the fall of ‘89: Here is an article that I think is interesting, it is an interview with Shery Anderson, screenwriter of the ninth season THE WRITE STUFF: FALCON CREST’S SHERI ANDERSON: FROM DAYS TO NIGHTTIME By Richard Spencer Soap Opera Update, 1989 : At a time when the success of nighttime soaps is shaky, Sheri Anderson, former headwriter for DAYS OF OUR UVES, ANOTHER WORLD, GUIDING LIGHT and GENERAL HOSPITAL, makes the jump to the evening format with some new ideas to help strenthen the CBS California vineyard based soap opera FALCON CREST. "FALCON CREST is going to have a differnet tone that it never had before," headwriter Sheri Anderson expiains. "The people that I am working with are kind of an interesting mix. The executive producer, Joel Sumow, did the first years of MIAMI VICE and THE EQUALIZER, Bob Cochran, a Harvard MBA,and Cyrus Nowrasteh, who has done a number of features, are story editors. I am co-porducer, with a history in daytime, so we are a real different mix. We all kind of balance each other out in different ways. I am sort of the emotional side (coming from daytime) and they are more the gritty side." A lack of focus is what Sheri attributes to FALCON CREST's problems the last few seasons. "No one , seemed to knwo that the characters' motivations were. Pilar was a real good example. No one seemed to know what she wanted. This season it is clear that Pilar wants Lance. That is really her dream and goal tokeep Lance. She will do anything to do that. She will be making some sacrifices thís season that really jeopardize her relationship with Lance." While Pilar's character may be strongly in place, Maggie's is not. How will the show restructure in light of Maggie's drowning? " We are not trying to replace her, but we are adding another kind of strong heroine character. That character is Laruren Daniels. She's very earthy; married to a construction worker. Lauren. is the sister of Michael Sharp, Gregory Harrison's new character. "Michael is an extremely powerful adversary to Richard Channing. He will be more cynical than Richard and less emotionally motivated. For Michael it is all power and money. The audience will be more sympathetic toward Richard. He will be going through hell," Sheri reveáis with doom in her voice, "...Paying for his past sins " The complete opposite of Richard or Michael's intensity is the the new character of Charlíe St. James."Charlie is every woman's foolish choice," Sheri character sketches. "He's kind of indescribable; charismatic, totally unpredictable, charming, unnervtng. He's coming in as a love interest for Emma. He will be the first man to make Emma feel like a woman. She's really not victimized by him...she’s addicted to him. Charlie's presence will make her a little less flakey this season." But Emma is not the only one in store for major personality changes, also in the categroy is Frank. "We arebringing back somebody from his past," Sheri reveals "there will be a great secret that will come to ight." Speaking of characters from the past, are there any Sheri would like to return? "Everyone is fond of Ana-Alicia in her original role. At this point we don't have any plans to bring her back because we have some other character that are going to take the forefront." And if one thing is going to remain the same, it will be what Sheri recognizes as the theme of FALCON CREST "Quest for control of Falcon Crest. We have people trying to take control, and they are all taking it for different reasons. Some are emotioanl, some are revenge, but they each have a different eason for which they want Falcon Crest. And that is really the pivotal center. It is very earthy." Keeping the core of lite show intact is not the only thing nighttime shows have to do to stay interesting and acording to Sheri"I din't think night time shows have kept paces with changes in the viewing audience," Sheri answers by analyzing what exactly is primetime soaps* problem. ln datyime, you do over the years the shows stay on, but you are adapting to what people are accepting:faster-paced, or slower, or addíng more comedy, depending on the audience, and what they are buying. I don't think some of these shows in primetime have done that "We are trying to make the show as much episodio as it is continuing. We are cutting down the number of scenes in each act to get the audience more involved. But some of the shows, and this happens in daytime al so, don’t let the characters really grow," Sheri certainly made chracters develop during her daytime career, but especially on DAYS OF OUR LIVES, which is the source for her favourite stories of her careen ”When Víctor carne to Salem and revealed tha the was really Bo’s father, it caused such a ripple effect for Kim, Shane, Román, Bo, Hope, Caroline and Sean. I also liked bringing Kayla back for Patch.” Having written for Kristian Alfonso' s Hope (DAYS) and now Pilar on FC, Sheri distínguishes between the two characters. "Pilar is a woman, but Hope was growing up. Hope was more innocent and Pilar is not Pilar has an intelligent strength where Hope did all the wrong things for all the right reasons." Pilar wíll be the only one retuming from her family, while Angela Channing’s appearances will be limited (per Jane Wyman's contract). "But Richard will be taking a very strong role which is very similar to Angela Angelad presence will be felt in every epísode/ Sheri informs. A lot of people complained about the women of FALCON CREST being wishy-washy They certainly aren't this season Sheri emphasizes. "Lauren will be strong, especially after her brother Michael steais Richard’s children and places them with her, Frnak’s step daughter will be very devious, indicateive of Kathleen Turner in “Body Heat” And Gregory Harrison is fabulous," Sheri reports with joy. "He is so different from his character on TRAPPER JOHN, M.D He is very similar to Michael Douglas in the film 'Wall Street'. FALCON CREST viewers will find a much richer textrae, getting away from the glamour and really going to substance and style." Sheri concludes, "it will be a show to watch, We are trying to bring in a new audience, and at the same time, respect our past audience."
    • Well, if he's had a series of mini-strokes along the way (which, IIRC, he did), then that influences things. I can say, from my experience of having had two full-blown strokes, that recovery periods were very, very different, both in terms of difficulty and length of time.
    • Whhhhhhhhhhhattttttttttttttttt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Was everybody out this weekend.
    • She did have a thing with him in the late '90s, before she inexplicably disappeared with no mention as to why, although I can't remember if they had sex.
    • I don't believe she did. She did sleep with Simon, believing he was a Spaulding.
    • -- If I ever get sick, please don't send me to Garland Memorial. That hospital is a YIKES. -- Soooo much activity around the main nurses' desk. Do they move dead people on a gurney past that desk, too? -- 8 months for Bill to recover from a "small stroke"? Uh....I don't think so. Is anyone researching this stuff? The hospital stuff is not coming off as realistic. -- It's good that Derek and Ashley are being integrated into other stories, but it's a real stretch to say Leslie was "stalking" Ashley. It makes Derek seem dumber than we already think he is. -- Ashley spends a lot of time having small talk while she's at work. -- Chelsea is embarrassing. Period. -- Tomas is supposed to pick up the slack for Bill, but he has time to have worthless conversations with Leslie? OK then. -- Kat is destroying the case against Leslie, but that's clearly the way to keep Leslie on the canvas.
    • 6-3   I almost let my system just delete the episode just like with B&B. I am now questioning if I should have. lol.   I just can't believe that Cole sat there and started to get sick and then only Victoria off and ran off and everyone basically went back to what they were doing at Nikki's birthday party. Cole was too much of a vet character for that. And now story back off-screen.   I did chuckle at how much Victor pay Kyle dust. And now Kyle with this deal and a promise to leave town if he hurts Claire. smh. As if Victor isn't going to make that happen.   It was lovely to see Ashley. And actually (misdressed and all) Abby.    And I liked Claire's dress.
    • Oh. That. I pretend that never happened.

I did think of another possibility. Did India ever sleep with Alan? They kind of toyed with pairing them up, but I'm not sure they ever became lovers.
    • While I do love the chaotic energy that is Kat vs Lesile, it is a bit extra. Sheltered, virginal Kat who plays it safe from her man to her wardrobe understands that Leslie is dangerous, but she's out here showing up everywhere and anywhere that Lesile is to be found and actively going to places where she is alone? I mean Kat doesn't even act a little afraid or intimidated by Leslie. Meanwhile, big Ole Derek out here begging for his and Ashley's life to Jacob.  As for Dani, I didn't see it that way. Dani and Bill were together for 30 years and shared a family. I believe there was real love there at one point. Bill is still an ass and Dani is still crazy, but realizing she may lose him and her daughter's may lose their dad definitely struck a chord.
    • Funny I randomly saw Kami’s lengthy post about the 44th anniversary of the Walton’s finale last week pop up in my news feed on Facebook. A few inaccuracies to her post but overall it was pretty insightful and interesting to read.
