GL: What's the deal with Phillip?

Hi everyone,

I am wondering about all this Phillip business... Is he coming back or what? I know for a long time they've talked about him, established that he isn't dead, established that people on the cast have had contact with him etc. etc. etc.

but honestly i wish they'd either [!@#$%^&*] or get off the pot. It's their own fault they screwed GA over so bad and made Phillip such a bag of douche... Either bring him back or stop mentioning him and allowing him to play such a big part of the plot in absentia.

Has anyone heard anything particularly on this subject?

Also - would a re-casted Phillip work? Haven't really seen GA's work as I wasn't watching then but I don't know, I'm sure a well-placed recast would work... Any ideas for a recast? Matt Ashford might work, though he's a LITTLE young. Jack Wagner perhaps if he wasn't on B&B... Drake Hogestyn... hahaha just kidding... I couldn't stomach him on DAYS...

Just wondering what's going on with this angle and why everyone keeps pimping Phillip lately if it's to no avail.

David Kreizman seems to love to do these stories centered around actors who he can't quite get back. Peter Simon, Grant Aleksander, you name it. I have no expectation that GA is back, so this is another pointless "OMG look out for Phillip" tease.

Though honestly, Phillip was at his most interesting for me shortly before his "death". If he were to come back on contract, I'd have no idea where to take his character. How do you go back from that and keep it interesting? The creature that Phillip became was fun but could not last.

You pose some good questions, ian.

It really irks me that TPTB are pimping Phillip to drive so much story on-screen now. That should give EW/DK some clue as to how vital the character is to Springfield. Unfortunately, because of the way they wrote Phillip right before he "disappeared", and from what I've heard from GA, don't expect to see him back in town anytime soon.

I attribute this whole Phillip angle in the Beth/Rick/Alan and the Olivia/Gus/Natalia storylines as just a load of crap because the writer's are not able - or are unwilling - to be more creative. There are many other ways they could write this story without further destruction of the character of Phillip.

To answer your other question, I'm not sure about a re-cast. I have watched GA as Phillip since they SORASed him in the early 80s. While some other actors did take over the role for a brief period (John Bolger comes to mind), it never felt right without GA. And really, this regime's track record with recasts (Dylan, Alan-Michael, Daisy/Susan, Mallet, CASSIE) isn't very good. The only two successful recasts, IMO of late have been Dinah and Lizzie and that's due to the strength of the actresses' ablility. A re-cast would have to be a very good one in order for it to work.

In short, I wouldn't expect Phillip - either inthe form of GA or a recast - to show up anytime soon. EW/DK are just blowing smoke up our asses. JMO.

Well it's just frustrating because they aren't taking the story anywhere... This is retarded. However, I imagine that if they were going to bring him back it'd be the most guarded secret since... Bobby is actually alive and in the shower on Dallas. So, maybe they know something we don't, but for the time being I'm inclined to agree that it's a whole lotta nothing...

Is there a story about Phillip on GL right now?? I have no idea.

I loved Grant Alexander as Phillip and if he came back - so would I. Everything with GL just sorta went downhill right after he left, in a way he represents the last good era of GL. When it comes to recasting - absolutely not. Some characters are just meant to be played by one person, since one actor has made that role their own. IMO, Grant did that to Phillip.

I think the way they've handled him since he left is a disaster. Again though, I really don't see what he could do at this point. Phillip was much more interesting during his last run as the controlling scheming Spaulding madman IMHO, and he's been backed into a corner there. What would be exciting about him coming back sane and reuniting with one of his exes? Him and Beth have been thrashed to death. I'd rather see him cause chaos, but there's no long term future in that.

The budget cuts had something to do with his exit. From what I've heard, between that and the way DK was writing Phillip before his "death" turned GA off. And then there was the whole "Crazy Beth in the Cabin" sl that was intended for GA/Phillip, but since they couldn't get him back they replaced him with Beth (!!).

There's not a lot of love lost between GA and EW.

I'm writing a series of essays about the first time of a LGBT character in US soaps. I already have datas about Sharon Duvall in DAYS (1977) as first Bisex, Lynn Carson in AMC (1983) as first Lesbian, Hank Elliott on ATWT (1989) as first Gay (someone have or can find the episode in which Paul Ryan finds out about Hank and does not take it very well? I have seen Hank's coming out to Iva and when Hank gets a bullet to save Paul's life from the latter evil father and when he gets tested for HIV after finding out Charlie's diagnosis, but Soap Opera Digest recaps are too much concises...) and Billy Douglas on OLTL (1992) as first LGBT teen in both daytime and primetime TV (I have seen all the episodes on You Tube. BTW, what a great storyline, why it was ignored by the Emmys? Andrew Carpenter and Billy's father players are both really great in their roles! Oh, well, if OLTL was not nominated for Best Drama in 1994 with Marty's gang rape story which won four major awards and was spectacular, no surprise at all - sadly) and I have read something about Azure in The City (1996) as first Trans, but I'd like to see the episode where Bernado finds out and Azure confirms what is said in that newspaper to have something to quote. I like quoting, it gives the essays more depth. I already read the biweekly recaps from Soap Opera Digest on Tumblr and single episodes recaps on IMDB, but I'd like to have more to write about. And something more about critics and public opinions - I only knows that the storyline was rapidly axed because of bad writing and bad performance by Carlotta Chung, but I have nothing to quote.   PS Thank you @JAS0N47 for your incredible and rich site (and work on it). In particular for the Nielsen ratings on weekly basis lists since 1974 and for everything about Sharon Duval - specially for the script of the confession episode dated 23 May 1977! I'm not a DAYS viewers (I'm Italian, I live in Italy and on You Tube there is almost nothing if not short videos), but I've seen some clips of Marlena's first possession (Deidre Hall is terrific in it! Storyline is garbage, but it has its chilling moments and it is funny - I laugh everytime I remember Kristen say to Marlena "according to the book of demonology"! Was she an espert of demons or what!? ) and read on Soap Opera Central daily recaps about infamous Melaswen (brainwashed Marlena has a particular sense of humor - killing ex alcoholic Maggie with a bottle of wine and Alice with her donuts...), so I know something about the soap. Little, but better than nothing.

    • I'm curious the motivation for keeping Bela on beyond the circus story arc.  Did he play a character like his character on EON, or was he more of a good guy? I know he ended up with Sunny at the end of the series, but I always thought that Sunny/Hogan could have been revived once the lack of chemistry between him and the NuLiza became apparent.   Actually... the NuLiza (Louan Gideon) reminded me more of Sunny than she did Liza as played by Sherry... and she just threw off the whole vibe of the show. I see Estelle has just arrived in the late October 1985 episodes, which only means that Wendy and Stephanie are soon on their way out.   It also appears that the Sarah/Quinn/Wendy triangle was set up by Mayer.. and it looks as though Tomlin is going to deactivate it by the introduction of Colleen Dion's character.   I don't understand why no one on the show thought to look at Quinn and realize that he was the problem and write him out.

    • I kind of assume they're toning down Rachel's bad seed tendencies a bit to make it less obvious if they're going for her as the shooter. At least that's what I hope they're doing - I've really enjoyed Rachel being a bratty evil DiMera princess and Marlena finally getting a grandchild she deserves.

. This show is so stupid. Sonny killed an FBI agent less than a year ago by shooting him at point blank range. But the new short bald man is much much worse cause he was a bad guy in some part of Africa and managed to not kill Lucky, Isaiah, Jason, or Anna. This show is crippled by the mob all these years after Guza has been long gone.    Laura is literally saying oooo but Sonny is a good mobster for Port Charles. Give me a [!@#$%^&*].ing break. Sometimes I don’t know why I watch this joke of a show.
    • With all the changes Sunny was one of the longest running characters by that time.  She had never been married and had heaps of story potential. I can see America getting with SFT -you know 'the circus soap'. Smart move because circuses were all the rage with the kids in the 80's. Maybe Stu and Jo could have bought the circus.
    • It is actually pathetic, that Victor’s 50 year old children are still written as scared of this man that has to sit in every scene. I get it, EB has been on the show for almost 50 years, but I don’t care. He’s a man in his 80’s and should not be the damn lead and driving force because you don’t want to upset Eric Braeden ‘s fragile ego that only exists because the writers have cowtowed to this man for so long.
