Ryan, I love you, but I have never disagreed with you more.

Soaps are supposed to be an escape from reality, yes. Romance, adventure, murder, betrayal, catfights. The ideal fantasies come to life of people who watch from home, anxious to get away from their humdrum lives.

But how can a "intersexed" incest storyline and the literal gates of Hell opening up be put in the same class as OLTL's Viki battling multiple personalities or DAYS' Marlena losing her son to SIDS? How can a centuries old witch hold a candle to Karen Wolek's heartbreaking testimony on the stand?

Passions is an amateurish fiasco being guided by a man who so has a disdain for daytime that he would do anything to discredit a genre that, before his wretched claws dragged him into the fray, flourished for decades while striking an emotional cord in millions of people on a daily basis.

He has succeeded in bringing his twisted fantasies and desires to the screen, and in making the world of soap operas yet another punchline for people on the sidelines.

The day JERk, and Passions, leave daytime is the day that the world can breathe a collective sigh of relief.

Wrestling averages about 5 million viewers a week for USA. It's their highest rated show on the network and is the top when it comes to weekly ratings for cable (though ESPN kicked their ass last week).

The good "soap" stories for wrestling ended the moment Stephanie McMahon and Brian Gerwitz (a reject soap writer) took over the creative team. But I agree, they tend to do more crazy things than Passions. They did a skit a few weeks ago when Mr. McMahon's "son" (who's a leprechaun who used to be called Little Bastard, now called Hornswaggle), painted a black hole into a wall, and "lept through it" to escape being chased by a bigger bully. Mr. McMahon blew himself up in a limo a few months ago.

Maybe structurally, but it is so insulting to viewer intelligence, full of psycopathic flood of narrative, sick and sickening, amazingly dull and disgusting, it is unbelievable that a human can write all that jazz, pardon cr*p. It's just not funny any more (not that it has ever been funny to me).

I know that reruns of SVU and CI regularly draw in the 2.0's for USA. Later reruns of those shows typically draw 1.5's, which is good for cable shows that air like 11 PM.

USA typically airs movies in the daytime as well, which is why I don't see them adding any original programing to their already strong daytime lineup.

I don't disagree with you at all. But many soaps are insulting to viewer intelligence (come on...the unabortion on AMC? Who just happens to be a jack of all trades?). GH can be just as bad as PSNS (especially with what seems to be an anti-woman agenda). But it's not like the other soaps are so great that PSNS is an embarrassment.

Shawn...

I'd love for soaps to tell stories like they did back in the day. What I wouldn't give for a great HIV pregnancy story on GH, or a wonderful post-partum depression story on AMC. But that won't happen any time soon. To hold PSNS to this standard that the other soaps haven't met in YEARS is a little unfair.

Yes they've told horrible disgusting stories, but which soap hasn't? The fact of the matter is, there people who enjoy PSNS for what it is. And when they tried to get into more "realistic" stories, they weren't happy. Reilly is a hot mess, but he knows what his audience (a majority of them) what to see.

by those standers name ONE current daytime soap opera.

love it, hate it, love to hate it, hate to love it, whatever ur feelings are on pssns, it IS a daytime soap opera. It IS full of classic soap stories with soapy twists and soapy turn's. i myself hate passions, but it IS a soap opera. and sadly, it IS better than most current daytime soaps.

and as far as SB, SuBe, & SG go... Santa barbara is the most overrated soap ever, IMHO. Granted, all three soaps failed, but SuBe was pure soapy camp with a heart. NBC shoulda kept sube over pss. and Spyder Games was just amazing, bad sets, not so great acting, and all.

as far was WWE goes, it's storylines went down hill after the attitude era ended. with the end of dx, stonecold & the rock being way over played and VM becoming larger than life... it just had nowhere to go. But hey, i guess it still works. It does well for USA. I mean, they wanted it back bad enough that they somehow pulled off WWE getting specials on NBC. im not 100% proof sure but i belive when WWE went to Spike TV (then TNN) USA's overall ratings dropped.

as for another home for passions... it wouldnt work on scifi, IMHO. they tried reruns and for whatever reason they didnt do well. honestly, the reason i think it doesnt work on scifi is it too campy and over the top and obvious about it, kinda like a slap in the face to scifi fans.

    • Perhaps. But would anyone have wanted The Doctors to turn into what General Hospital ultimately became?  Dear God in Heaven...
    • Thanks @EricMontreal22 that must be one of the last issues. Probably the best soap magazine.
    • I can definitely see that airing the same week as The Love Boat colliding with an iceberg and sinking while crossing the North Atlantic on the Titanic anniversary with a “Who lives and dies?!” Promo next to Mr Belvedere being blackmailed over his wanted fugitive status back in the UK

Agree with you both. I am also going assume that while Hotel may had some big numbers the first 2 seasons BUT the demographics weren’t great. Reason I say this is I distinctly remember my parents watching St Elsewhere and/or The Equalizer after Dynasty.    I still don’t get Hotel’s designation as a primetime soap opera either lol. ABC should have aired Paper Dolls in the 10/9 slot on Wednesdays in the fall of 1984 to give that show some more legs.    Obviously ABC was eyeing a double bill night in the same vein as Dallas & Falcon Crest and that might have worked better than leaving Paper Dolls to the wolves in an untested timeslot.
    • I tend to stay out of EP discussions, simply because I rarely know who EPs when. And they all have their good and bad sides. But how are we supposed to judge JFP on anything other than what we see? I didn't know she was a director or a music director. (and unlike say, Chris Goutman, I never saw her credited as anything other than an EP) Specifically in the matter of casting Crampton, she took credit for it (or at Crampton gave her credit for it, whatever) and it was arguably, one of the worst recasts of the '90's (and either as bad or worse than the actress she fired).  She lost two important actresses in '92 and still decided to kill Maureen.  She had a wildly uneven tenure at GL. It's no wonder she's polarizing. But it kind of proves a point--great soap is always a that rare combination of everything clicking at the same time.  And believe me, if I could bring myself to watch her male successors who were responsible for bringing back Reva and allowing her to eat the show again, or hiring Hunt Block, or being too chicken to stand up to stans who and hamstrung the show with boring couples stuck in the same repetitive stories (Vanessa/Matt, Chelle/Danny or Richard/Cassie, take your pick) not to mention San CristoHELL....I'd be more than happy to roast them on open spits. I guess we end up talking about JFP because she's in a period we can nominally agree was one of the last "best" periods of the show.
    • A degree does not make one an expert at their job, it just shows that you can follow directions from a technical standpoint.  It doesn't mean that they're creative. JFP was all about the look of a show without considering that technical beauty can only carry a show so far if there is nothing interesting to go along with it.  Equality means calling out flaws equally in both genders.
    • NBC or P&G was even fool enough to take a full page ad for two consecutive weeks in TV Guide promoting this horrible storyline.

    • JFP has had more defense for her decades of terrible producing than many male producers ever had.
    • It makes sense that she got a degree in directing. I've always said she should have been a director. I think she works better at the technical aspects of the show. I think her problem is the emotion/heart of a show.  She always guts the heart of the show she's on and she makes decisions that stop longtime viewers from watching a show. I don't think it's sexism to call that out especially as I've said similar things about Conboy. I've called out Rauch for much worse.
    • "Aunt Blanche" first appears toward the end of this episode, about 57 minutes in.

    • You're probably right. They may have just wanted edits of certain characters. Hopefully the rest is around.
