AMC: New Head Writer(s)

No, I wouldn't wish Carruthers on any other show. She's clearly not cut out to be an EP. She works best when she's a Supervising Producer, like she was on both Santa Barbara and GH. Some might like her PC EP stint, but really, that show was never truly good to begin with, who really had high expectations for it?

She was at Susan Lucci's surprise birthday party for her husband a month or two ago. She's close by, in retirement but close by.

She had almost a good 2 years where she did not hit or tie any lows for AMC, which is more than you can say for the interim writers or the Grim Reapers. That's not me condoning bringing her back, I don't. I'd say her best period of ratings was early 2005, which IMO was steam from the last week of the babyswitch.

Riche would be fantastic at AMC. We know she can handle social storylines and can deliver the goods producing great drama.

I personally think the staff writers get blamed way too much. I mean look at who they wrote under - McTavish and B&E! You can only do so much when you have horrible HWs. They're not miracle workers. LOL

Oh, so, AMC improves, while ATWT, w/ Carruthers at the helm, sinks further into oblivion? I don't think so, lol.

I've already thrown out my suggestion (Patrick Mulcahey) for HW. For EP, though, I think I'd like to see someone who hasn't worked in daytime before, but who has experience producing and/or directing quality entertainment (preferably, for the theater). Someone who knows how to collaborate with their writers, and who isn't trying to be the next David O. Selznick. After all, even Wendy Riche started out in primetime, did she not?

Oh, God, the blessed baby-switch. The storyline even Stephen "If I Weren't a Writer, I'd Be a Serial Killer" King thought was so gosh-darn amazing.

You know, if I never hear about that hot mess of a drama again, it will be too soon.

Kick Ms. Beall to the curb. Her writing tics are annoying as hell IMO. I'm with R Sinclair on this one. But I'd love to see Lorraine Broderick back. I could deal with Wendy Riche or maybe Chris Goutman as EP, but only if ABC tried and failed to lock down Felicia Minei Behr.

You mean like Linda Gottlieb? She was mainly a producer of movies and television before she was hired as EP of OLTL in 91. I think she'd be great at AMC as well, but I already know you hated her OLTL stint with Malone. LOL!

I think Wendy Riche started out as TV Movie producer, but she's LA based, so I don't think she'd go to the NYC for AMC.

Yeah...unfortunately.

Indeed, I did, lol. I realize it's anathema (sp?) to say you don't care for early-'90's OLTL, but I don't. Never have, never will. Of course, much of daytime today makes the AIDS Quilt/Homophobia story look like "Angels in America," but, you know, I just felt like Linda Gottlieb never understood what OLTL was about.

OTOH, there are probably a lot of talented producers and directors who work outside of daytime, but who could be just the breath of fresh air that's needed to keep this genre alive and thriving.

Y&RWorldturner & Khan: I'm in as well.

Anyways, my ideal AMC HW is Lorraine Broderick with Felicia Minei Behr as EP. I'm also one of those who didn't mind Francesca James's run. AMC really needs a strong EP because the show has gone through a number of writers and the one consistent aspect of the basic hell that AMC has become is Julie Hanan Carruthers. That being said, as long as Brian Frons is around the ABC soaps are screwed.

Broderick, Curlee, Demorest and Reilly are HW's; Mulcahey, Walsh, Washam and Whitesell handle the breakdowns; and the rest can participate in a sort of weekly script lottery, where one of the co-heads drops all their names into a hopper and picks out five at random. Innovative, no?

    • Greg and Paige were an interesting choice for a couple.  I do think the lack of focusing on the generational differences hindered their long term potential. I think Laura had learned to keep her feelings close to her vest, especially after the hell she went through in her early years on the show.  The last scene of her trying to keep her tears inside as she drove away was the first time we had seen Laura really express what she was feeling after two or three seasons of her keeping her true self hidden from everyone.. even Greg.
    • I guess my hunch may be right about her. I'm still very split about it. My husband thinks she is a joke, doesn't like her acting and thinks she is over the top. At the beginning I liked her a lot... And I definitely don't agree with my husband about her acting... But still something just puts me off when Felicia is on screen. It's like they are pushing her to be this grand dame too much. It doesn't come off natural, but very staged and superficial. Wearing a head piece and a gown doesn't make you suddenly be that. In most cases it makes people look foolish... when they are still wearing a huge hat while sitting in someone's ugly kitchen talking about stuff. To me... the actress and character shine the most when she seems down to earth and talking through something troubling. When the fluff and glitz is less and the REAL is more. When they act like she is Joan Crawford that's when I start wondering what is going on. She isn't. And some of the wardrobe choices for her have been horrific.  Of course all of these impressions are personal ones and I don't claim to know what the character will become in the future or what it was when she started.  I'm only saying my natural response to her now.   Then I'll blame him too! Thank you for the compliment. I'm sorry to respond so late but that's the first time I'm reading these comments.   More like criticism to the show and the way they are portraying her. I still like the actress a lot.
    • Mid 1979 to mid 1981 was A+ quality for the show.   I even found things to like about the show in the final year or so when the quality had somewhat declined.
    • From what I heard, the actress playing Leslie opted to leave so instead of recasting again.. they killed her off.   Holly brought it on herself by lying and pretending Christina was Ed's child.  Although I do think that Rita's actions with withholding that message from Ed weighed upon her.   Even though she won Ed in 1976, she realized over time that she never truly had him. There was no Rita/Tim/Evie triangle.  Tim and Evie dated after Rita broke up with him (which happened before Evie and her mother came to Springfield).  Ironically Tim did to Evie what Rita previously did to him... leading someone on that you're not interested in.
    • I mean, he is but he's also still an ásshole.
    • The most beautiful thing about getting into a new soap opera is getting to know the characters yourself and figuring everything out slowly. And EON is one of the easiest when it comes to that. Pretty soon you are so well oriented in who is who and what are their motivations. I only struggled with the episodes before Mansion of the damned started.  Then after that it's pretty smooth sailing.
    • I don't hate Hayley but she would absolutely cry about falling for Jacob.
    • @BroderickThank you for the reply. Such acting that they Sharon Gabet and the actor playing Draper still played their relationship after it's over. I picked up on it even though I had no idea about their history. That's such good acting/continuity.  Raven has just moved to London and a custody battle is now brewing for Jamey.
    • Ha-ha-ha, I thought it was Marland who turned Mike into a jerk, but apparently not. I get that they probably felt the Mike/Leslie story had run its course, but they should have at least let them have a kid. Especially since they were soon ensnaring him in a storyline with a woman who couldn't have children (Elizabeth). Of course, no one could have predicted there would be a dearth of Bauers a few years later. I remember this! I remember Holly sitting by the phone, desperate for Ed to call so they could stop the divorce. I forgot it was Rita who never gave him the message. What a bitch.

Please register in order to view this content

But, yeah, this is the Rita I remember at the beginning: very determined to bag Ed. I contend that Holly never, ever got over it, never stopped regretting that the divorce went through. I wish at some point over the years they had let Holly and Ed reunite for more than a brief affair. It feels like a thread that was left hanging. There she is! I was beginning to think I had dreamed up the Rita/Tim/Evie triangle.
