ABC gives 'Road,' 'Notes' new homes

Network spells out slots for sophomore shows

By MICHAEL SCHNEIDER

ABC is getting a jump on its midseason lineup, setting up new homes for sophomore entries "October Road" and "Notes From the Underbelly."

"October Road" misses its namesake by a month, instead receiving a one-night-only bow in its former Thursday 10 p.m. slot on Nov. 22.

That means "Road" will steer "Big Shots" off Thursday for the night. After that, skein motors to Mondays at 10 p.m. (as announced in May) starting Nov. 26 in the slot vacated by "The Bachelor," which will have handed out its final rose at that point.

Also on Nov. 26, the one-hour "Dancing With the Stars" finale will be followed at 9 p.m. by "Samantha Who?," which slides back half an hour into its new slot. At 9:30, ABC pushes out "Underbelly."

Meanwhile, as the net also promised last spring, "20/20" and "Men in Trees" will be swapping timeslots effective Nov. 2. That means "20/20" will return to its usual 10 p.m. spot, while "Trees" will climb down to 8 p.m.

"October Road," from ABC Studios and GroupM Entertainment, stars Bryan Greenberg as a successful novelist who returns to his hometown. Gary Fleder, Scott Rosenberg, Josh Appelbaum, Andre Nemec and Peter Tortorici exec produce.

"Notes From the Underbelly" stars Jennifer Westfeldt and Peter Cambor as expectant parents. Stacy Traub, Barry Sonnenfeld, Kim Tannenbaum and Eric Tannenbaum exec produce for Warner Bros. TV.

Fox picks up «Back to You»

ABC order six more scripts of 'Samantha'

By MICHAEL SCHNEIDER

Fox orders full season of Kelsey Grammer/Patricia Heaton news comedy "Back to You": Pickup at 11.

Demonstrating its strong belief in the laffer - despite early low numbers - Fox added an addition two segs to the traditional "back nine." With the 11-seg order, "Back to You" will complete its first season with 24 episodes in the can.

It was a good day for TV comedy: ABC also picked up six additional scripts of "Samantha Who?" on Wednesday. A full-season pickup for "Samantha," the fall's top-rated new comedy so far, is imminent.

As for "Back to You," show has been slow to catch on - but it does kick off a night, which is always a tough order for a comedy, especially a new one. Also, "Back to You" will likely benefit from the return of "American Idol," and the halo effect that talent competish has on the Fox sked.

The 20th Century Fox TV skein, created by Steven Levitan and Christopher Lloyd, has averaged a 2.6 rating and 8 share with adults 18-49 after five airings. Among total auds, laffer has averaged 7.4 million viewers.

"Back to You" stars Grammer as Chuck Darling, the pompous TV anchor who shrinks back to his old Pittsburgh station after being fired from a major market. He's then reunited with his former co-anchor, Kelly Carr (Heaton), who still harbors a grudge. Fred Willard, Ty Burrell, Josh Gad, Ayda Field and Laura Marano also star.

I dunno I posted my comments in the thread on the show here--but the show just felt so PHONEY to me--everythign played TV cute and to make that worse the writers didn't seem to be aware--they thought they were making a Herskovitz/Zwick style show full of emotional truths when NOTHIGN rang true and everything felt over written or precious (does EVERY character have to have a sort of behaviourial trademark? Do we really need another show about boys who never grow up and the much more talented and capable and successwful womenwho oddly still love them?? Does no one else see this is almost misogynistic?? Ya the guy stuck in his house for no real good reason is SUCH a catch...)

LOL anyway I don't see it having much of a future...

I actually really like how Oct Road is light and fun, yet still simi dramatic. Its not some hard havy drama. I love the H&Z style shows and all, but i dont think this was suposed to be like them. I do feel oct Road is a little misplaced on ABC tho. It should be something on The CW. Its more in the style of 7th heaven & Everwood, IMO.

But i love the show. The little kid is a blast to watch. BG is such a talented young actor, and who knew Donna from that 70's show could act? no i dont think it will last much longer, but im glad i get to see more of it.

Well I do have to admit I largely think the cast is great... But it's just... So cliche--you can see every plot twist and I think the quirks try too hard. And like I said I'm sick of the current trend in movies and TV of making heroes of these man-boys who somehow still manage to attract and obssess these far more intelligent, accomplished, and mature women.

The show just rubs me the wrong way and part of the reason I admit is because I wish I did like it--I could do with a lighter style (as you mention) drama like this...

ABC Has «Dirty» on Its Mind

ABC's "Dirty Sexy Money" is the latest freshman series to receive an order for additional scripts in the face of a potential writers strike.

"Dirty" has done OK but not great in the 10 p.m. Wednesday slot, ranking No. 2 despite having the strongest demo lead-in in "Private Practice."

The primetime soap starring Peter Krause and Donald Sutherland joins ABC's rookie comedies "Carpoolers," which also has received a three-script order, and "Samantha Who?" which received a six-script order.

ABC has handed out full-season pickups to two new dramas: "Practice" and "Pushing Daisies." There has been no movement on the Neanderthal comedy "Cavemen."

CW Sows More «Reaper» Scripts

The CW's "Reaper" is the latest freshman series to receive an order for additional scripts.

The network on Thursday picked up three additional scripts from the dramedy starring Bret Harrison as a slacker working as the devil's bounty hunter.

Meanwhile, sources said the CW's freshman comedy "Aliens in America" is set to stay in continuous production after the completion of its 13-episode order in anticipation of a back order.

The CW's rookie drama "Gossip Girl" was the first new series this season to secure a full-season pickup. There is no word yet on CW's low-rated new drama "Life Is Wild."

"Reaper," from ABC Studios and the Mark Gordon Co., is one of the best-reviewed freshman series this fall, but the dramedy starring Bret Harrison as a slacker working as the devil's bounty hunter has had a slow start in the ratings in its post-"Beauty and the Geek" slot on Tuesday.
