Alina's nothing but a P&G mouthpiece. Marland didn't mean a headwriter should let the show stagnate. And she neglects to mention that the "newbie filled" Doug Cummings mystery unfolded over the course of at least a year, and the suspects were tied to more than one plot. Not like a month, like the Dusty/Cheri murder today.

That is so angering!

There are legends like Bill Bell, Agnes Nixon, Douglas Marland and Kay Alden that have given so much to soaps and should be respected, not trashed.

By the way, could someone post Marland's 10 rules here? I followed the link but it won't bring it up. :(

The link is a dead end, but I was able to scrounge up a couple more points:

Read the fan mail. The very characters that are not thrilling to you may be the audience's favorites.

Talk to everyone; writers and actors especially. There may be something in a character's history that will work beautifully for you, and who would

know better than the actor who has been playing the role?

Have clips from the racy year long cable soap Marland created, One Day in Eden for Showtime (i believe a year before Loving) ever surfaced? I always wanted to know more about that soap--it's early stories on taboo subjects liek homosexuality and light nudity etc but nothign seems to exist except people who say it was better than most early cable soap attempts (Maybe I should start a new thread for this)

The things I'd argue is in many of the cases (the one about GH in particular--maybe the audience liked the characters who were ther ebut the ratings were basement level dire--if Marland hadn't changed them quickly Monty woulda fired him and the show probably woulda been canceled--and keeping a show and a job probably take precedent--and it can be argued that if ratings were that low, even if the existing audiences enjoyed those characters it wasn't working

Where's that?

Thething is I think the rpaise for these great scribes can get overwhelming--Doug Marland wrote some lousy stories (his mysteries on ATWT particularly sucked) bill Bell was obssessed with incest and did some out fo character bad shock stories (that Y&R guy with the tatoo on his head and the garbage compactor, the piranhas, etc), Agnes Nixon agreed to a lot of silly things that didn't work (Santa Cluse, villain sells soul to the devil) and had a tendancy, as did Marland and especially Bell come to think of it to rewrite their own stories (Bell's first five years of B%B beign the worst example) and I think tis' fair to point out these flaws. But it doesn't, to me anyway, take away anything fromhow great and important all three writers were/are

One of the really arrogant assessments is that Marland stuck his new families into the mix at the expense of others just to further a new agenda. But in a landscape of wealthy power players, doctors and lawyers, GL and ATWT gained a perspective on the working class once the Reardons and Snyders were added. In an era of Dallas and Dynasty, at least someone remembered that those of us without mansions are interesting too.

I do agree, but in the case of the Snyders, they really did end up becoming the focus of the show. If anyone new got into ATWT now, without researching the show, they'd probably believe the Snyders were the original core family of the show, whereas the Hughes were only a secondary family. Of course this isn't Marland's problem anymore, but he did get the ball rolling.

^Actually Marland is credited with reinvigorating the Hughes family after they had become fractured in the early 80s. Frannie was as much of a force as Lily, and Bob & Kim became parents yet again at a late age in the midst of Kim being stalked. Then Sabrina arrived. Then Nancy and Mac got together. Then Andy's alcoholism led to Bob's affair. Then Margo was raped. The only long term family Marland gave a lesser role to was the Stewarts. I don't see how he got "the ball rolling" on an issue of balance that any writer should know how to fix themselves.

^Oh I agree there, I just meant the rapid expansion of the Snyders in the past 20 years was pretty daring. I just meant in retrospect if Marland knew that they'd morph into the dominant clan of the show.

But, was ATWT really in that much trouble before Marland's stint? He seems held to such a high regard and I do admire his talent and his contributions to both ATWT and GL. However, just how bad were the writing stints of Caroline Franz and John Saffron (1983) and Tom King and Millee Taggart (1984-1985), prior to Marland's second stint as HW?

Did Bridget and Jerome Dobson (1979-1983) have the same success on ATWT, like their glorious and esteemed tenure on GL?

    • I would have bought it if Ed/Rick/Michelle were all there, but 1) Ed said he couldn't go because he had to work, to which even someone highlighted that he's chief of staff and could easily go if he wanted; 2) Michelle got on the plane with Rick to go, but J showed up and the Spaulding's kicked him off because why would they want another random teenager to go, so Michelle ran off the plane after him and Rick just let her go (haha, it was kind of dumb); and 3) Rick and A-M have barely said 2 words to each other in the 15 months I've been watching so far, so it was weird he's now just by himself with the Spauldings/Coopers.   But I know now why they're doing this, Rick is clearly there because Phillip has shown up. Very plot-driven, but at least I’m getting old flashbacks of Rick/Phillip during this.
    • Maybe Brad can turn that day into an entire season.
    • I didn't get to finish the episode last night. It's been a week and I was not able to keep my eyes open.  I will say that I understand everyone's comments on the new Ted. I think more so than anything is the shock. Where else in modern TV do you get an actor to replace another from one day to the next without a break or some storyline to explain it. However, it's such a soap staple that I can't help but love it when I heard "The role of...is now being played by..."  I think the actor is good. I felt like Kat felt different playing against him. I wonder if it was nerves or just maybe this actor bringing something difgerent out of Colby. I do think Maurice's acting range showed itself to be weak when he got these more emotionally charged scenes to play. I actually clocked him as one of the weaker actors from Day 1, but he definitely wasn't the worst and I didn't think he needed to be replaced. However, I'm open to new Ted. Maybe Maurice can come back as Andre's daddy back from the "dead."  Ashley is really becoming unlikable with her attitude towards living with Derek. Although, she should have shut him down the minute he imposed the idea on her. Also, if I'm living with someone and I have a guest coming over soon which I forgot to mention to that person than they are more than welcome to stay. Especially, if that person is someone we both know. They'll just be made aware that next time I'm going to need them to leave for a few while when I have time with a friend. It was so rude the way she approached it, which makes it even more confusing as to why all the characters around her put her on a pedestal and Andre is obsessed.  I honestly don't see any chemistry between Andre and Ashley. Andre gets on my nerves. I'm sorry yall, but I can't with that man. He always gotta let out a huff in that last syllable when he's saying something emotional. It's like okay now Big Bad Wolf. Also, what is the appeal of Ashley? She's boring. The character is bland. I do feel for the Ashley and Derek actors because what are they even doing there...taking up space.
    • Liam hasn't had a purpose in years, none of the Spencer's have. The Spencer family should be written off and let Finn adopt Kelly, he's more her dad anyways.  IMO I think SC seen the writing on the wall with Liam. Brad is never going to let the character grow or evolve. Even dying he's being wishy washy and a waffler lol. Scott out there asking for Liam to be a villain and paired with Ivy only for Liam to continue to waffle I'd rather see Scott back at GH as Dillon or Michael Quartermaine   But I dunno I read Scott has issues with Frank that stem from his time on One Life to Live Also all the Lope flashbacks where when Liam was married to Steffy and one of them was when Hope was telling Liam she was pregnant(he was married to Steffy then) lol I need Steffy out of that white blazer, please burn it, it's awful. This day has gone on for like 3 weeks now. ONE DAY
    • Thanks! I never venture back to re-watch that period of the show
    • I was wondering about Liam wearing that hat for such a long time, as it was supposed to be covering up his surgery wound -- but he wouldn't need a hat for this long a period of time. Then I noticed everyone's wardrobe is the same, too, and realized that it's been the same "Forrester/Logan day" for two weeks of episodes. I guess he just got out of the hospital and all these episodes are discussing what happened?
    • I would have to say FD was the luckiest man in daytime who stayed way past any reason for him to be there, but yes, totally agree that Alan should have died at that point, which would have spared us more years on mustache twirling bombasity.   I know it was a big get to bring Joan Collins on, and I loved her Alex, but it would have been great at that point if they had just brought Amanda back. Phillip is named by Alan and Alex as the successor or head of family and head of the corporation, with the board and investors approval. Amanda (who is back to being Alan's daughter, it was one last "screw you" from Brandon to try to get Alan and Alex at each others throats) gets pissed and comes back to stake her claim and be a thorn in everyone's side. Meanwhile Liv is suddenly REALLY interested in Phillip as he will have a longer self life then Alan. Things unfold much as they did with Amanda coming back to thwart Liv as Alex did..and when the truth comes out Alan really does have a heart attack and kicks (for real, for good, no fake outs, no returns, he's dead..dead.) and then AM comes back (as Taggert originally planned before Weston came to stink up the place.) to make his claim also. Phillip' guilt over Alan's death and having no final reconciliation ( On his death bed Alan could say, "I am proud of you son, you have finally become a real Spaulding," right before he kicks. ) I also agree that Phillip was not always likable, which really I give GA credit for being brave enough to make him that way, which is exactly how Phillip should be.   Ed and Chelle were there, but she ran off the plane to chase J...(I kid you not, that is why we started calling her Slutchelle) and Ed ran after her. The reason they, and no one else was at the wedding was obviously to save money, so it would have made more sense to have it on an existing set then that dumb Universal Studios thing.
    • They probably threw in Rick because he's AM's cousin, Michelle should've been there too. I don't remember if Ed was still on the show at this point
    • In the 2nd semi-final, I enjoyed Denmark and Luxembourg (plus France) the most. I was also positively surprised by Germany's performance, because usually our performances are ... well, lackluster, to put it nicely. The one country I did not expect to qualify was Armenia, but yeah, the staging probably helped a lot, because the song itself is just noise in my ears. I thought Serbia would make it instead. None of the Ex-Yugo countries made it to the Grand Final (first time since 2013), while all the Nordics and Baltics qualified. Recap of the 2nd semi-final:
